Hi ppl me and my freind are starting the starting strengh program tommorow. I said i would write him a nutrition program but first i dont know whteher to cut him or maintain him.. He is 6ft 2in and weighs 16stone or 224 pounds whichever is easiest.
At the minute he has a high bf % Prob around 30. Do you think i should write one to maintain him for 6 months and see how it pans out or should i cut him to around 200 - 210lbs.
See im the opposite im 140lb 5ft 10in and im bulking to 180lb and i've written my own nutrional program av just got my m8s to write but what weight is good for a newbie who is 6ft 2in at 224lb..
Any help Appreciated thanks ppl!!!

If he has never trained before and hasn't followed a decent diet before, I wouldn't try to have him cut right away. Have him clean up his diet and do the program and he is likely to gain some muscle and lose some fat at the same time if he is a true beginner.

Read this article:

http://www.wannabebig.com/diet-and-nutrition/to-bulk-or-to-cut-that-is-the-question-or-is-it/

That should be pretty helpful. It'll give you a simple formula to calculate total calories he should use as well as what his macros (Protein/Carbs/Fat) should be within those calories.

If in doubt, cut!

if he is really 30% bodyfat, any kind of diet fundamentally geared towards fat loss (simple calorie restriction for example) will yield results.

especially if he is untrained

eat better, life hard, lift consistently, and see results.

in other words, cut.
