I have a meet coming up in about 4 weeks and I can't decide if I wanna try and cut weight or not. I'm right around 193 - 195 right now, and I'm not sure if I could cut enough water to make 181. Last time I lost about 7 pounds.

I know I've read about guys cutting 20+ pounds fairly often, just curious how much some of you guys have dropped before a meet. I know I'd be pissed if I cut 10+ pounds and still missed weight by like a pound or two.

ive heard of ufc athletes dropping 40 pounds in a couple of weeks before a fight just be running biking and basically dehydrating themselves.. it really doesnt seem healthy but my friend lost 80 pounds in 4 months simply by cutting out energy drinks and soda. id say go for it.

about 20 for a 24 hour weigh in.. I now try to stick to 10-12lbs max. Last meet i was 235lbs a week out. I leaned up my diet and was around 232 24 hours out. I then dropped water and somehow weighed in at 217.

Mind you, the hardest cut i ever did was from 250 to 242.. I didn't prepare for it and the weight just would not come off.

18 lbs in 24 hours, two different times. It's awful, but doable. I don't ever think I want to do that much again. 10 lbs will be the most.

im 255 right now and want to be 242 for my meet on march 26th. how would you guys reccomend doing it? i was reading an article by matt kroc and he said that he just sits in a hot bath for 30 mins at a time until he is at the right weight.

Went from 275 to 253 in 6 weeks, then down to 249 the last week and finally 18lbs in the last 24 hrs to 231 for a strongman comp in Sept. 2010...
rehydrated back up to 245 by the next morning (13 hrs) at the start of the competition..

Stayed at 253 and redid the same 18 lbs cut 3 months later for another comp..

This is tough.. but doable..
The 6 week cut is hard - eating super healthy, low carbs, high protein, added lite cardio as soon as I woke up most days.. but was able to keep 98% strength...
The last week I used the wrestler/mma super hydration method... basically drink water until you drown yourself lol... and then watch it all pi_s out..
Each time this was good for 10-12 of those last 18 lbs...
Then I sauna'd the last 6-8 lbs out in 4-5 hrs...

And I'm old.. :)
Good luck..

here is what i do.. it works fine for me and isn't actually all that painful.

At the start of march start increasing water and salt intake.

around 2 days out drop most of your salt.

last 2 days only eat very calorie dense foods which weigh less (nuts etc)

12-14 hours out (think 1lb an hour.. but i bet you are already closer to 250 by now) stop drinking/eating all foods. Monitor your weight loss, if you are on pace, don't do anything. If you are over sit in a very hot bathtub for 20-30mins. I can only stand doing this 1-2x then i use a sauna (or make one in hotel bathroom). If you did your diet right the weight is going to fly off. In 20 minutes last meet i dropped 4lbs with my first bath.

I've dropped 10-12 (252ish to 242) on a 24 hour weigh-in a couple of times. Wasn't too bad. All I did was load water for a week and then cut it the night before weighing in.

The most I've cut was about 13 pounds (to make 181). For me personally I've found that I have a had time feeling right the next day, so I've kind of ditched cutting water for weigh-ins. I ge my bodyweight back but feel weak. Maybe there are a few rehydration things I haven't learned yet, and I can definitely see that cutting is kind of a necessary evil to get to the top, so I'll have to keep learning it. For the time being though I'm working on competing at 220, and I'm typically about 205 to 208, so I have some gaining to do. I just feel so much better when my weight is on an upswing heading into a meet.

The last meet I did last year I bloated myself to 212 for my first meet as a 220 and got a PR bench, deadlift, and total out of it, so I like it so far. Of course eventually I'll weigh over 220 and have to deal with cutting again.

Something to think about is your total bodyweight when you start and how lean you are. Us fat guys are usually holding more water weight to start with. Cutting 10lbs for a guy that is 250 is usually a lot easier than for a guy that weighs 200.

Thanks for the responses. Last meet I lost about 7 pounds as I said, just from cutting water, and the weigh-ins were only an hour before the lifting started. This meet has 24 hour weigh-ins, which is why I'm curious how much I can really push it.

Adam you do make a good point. Obviously I'm not holding as much water as a 275 pounder.

Mike: The meets where you felt off/funny, were they 24 hour weigh-ins?

231 to 197 for 24 hr weigh in, so 34 total. This one was tough to get down
RUM cut 240 to 213, so 27 total. This one was easy, could have gone another 5-7 but no point.

I have cut 8lbs in a 12hr weigh in, but I am over 300lbs so not real difficult. I pretty much did it how everyone is suggesting. Cut out the water and took a few hot shower/baths and it came right off. I am going to have to cut about the same to get into 308 in april. Will be my first full meet in a long time, so hope to diet down pretty close to 308 before the meet...........J. Byrd

I cut 12lbs with a 2 hour weigh in to make 242. It sucked.

18-20 lbs for some USAPL meets. Thats what I weighed 6-7 days out and lost. Water manipulation, no wheats/grains, reducing sodium few days out, nutrionally dense foods week out, cutting creatine, and the almighty night premeet lemon binge. Not that bad of a process.

Same method, except for lemon binge (used ginger root), to drop from 162 to 148 in five days.

Those of you who just water load without cutting carbs & sodium, how much water do you drink? Someone told me up to four gallons a day. Is that b.s.?

18 lbs. in 16 hrs. in 2001 to make 220s. I dropped all of my opener by 10 lbs. and I'm glad I did. I missed all of my planned openers on 2nds! I swore I'd never drop that much again that fast. Doesn't sound like that much after reading Sam's post! LOL!

I cut around 30 lbs last year to make 220... there's a thread about it here somewhere :)

It's not nice at all. This year I plan to be 240 or less and leaner to compete at 220

Edit - and my best total in my sig below I messed up and couldnt shift the last 6 lbs lol

The most that I have done was 15+ lbs for a 24-hour weigh-in but it was pretty rough.

If you can keep yourself within 10 lbs it is not bad at all; but anything more puts a lot of strain on your body.

Ive gone from 295-274 in 24hrs before... definitely not doing that again. Brought by bodyweight down to 276 now, so I can go 275 or 308 without too much effort
