I am going to try and DIY an axle for strongman training and I was wondering if someone woudl know exactly what type of schedule 80 pipe I should get. I am pretty sure 1.5" (internal diameter), black steel is what I want, is that correct?

i just recently went to a local performance car part store that makes roll cages. they hooked me up with an awesome fat bar. its 2.5 inch outside diameter in the center and then 2 inch diameter where the plates will go. using cold rolled steel and tig welding for the strongest applications. got the whole thing for 50 bucks.

The schedule 80 pipe is a good option; or you can sometimes find solid steel stock for a reasonable price and then you will have a roughly 75 lbs axle that is virtually indestructable.

That's what I'm going to do once I outgrow my current one. Right now I'm just using fence post and it cost me about $30 to make a 7' bar and 2 fat bar DBs.

Thanks guys! Looks like there are a few options, I'll have to shop around and price out the best deal.

Works fine for me. I saw it on some diy thread and it was the easiest/cheapest one I came across.
