View Full Version : good time to gauge max

Gonna start training Monday, but it'll be the first time since a few months of inactivity. What would be the best time to set maxes? After the first week of training? Three weeks?

Thats a loaded question.

I'd estimate them all in the first week on whatever day you normally plan to do them. But, I would only work up until a decent perceived max could be estimated for whatever lifts you need to judge, as opposed to going balls out to failure and frying yourself before the program starts. Basically, it makes Week 1 a 90% (give or take) for 1 rep.

Alright, I appreciate the input. I think ill train for Mon, Tues, and Thurs, then max on Friday.

Just max and find out. Then build a plan from those numbers.

THIS..... why guess? Especially when you first come back after a break, everything is fresh, your nervous system is fresh, just push heavy for a few weeks and see how hard you can push. Why hold yourself back with perceived maximums?

It's easy to over-think this stuff.... when in doubt, push heavy weight.
