Here we go, it's a new year with some new goals, so why not start a new journal. I've decided to skip the BMC once again. They changed the date from March 24th to March 10th and it sort of threw me off guard. So now i'm just going to start 531 and train to get strong.

380 x 15
380 x 15

Done...not a bad session to start the new year. I really need to work on my deadlift volume. But I want to stay away from the higher reps. So what i'm going to try this cycle is do the required reps for 2-3 sets. I'm also going to pull every other week and do chain suspended GM's in between.

When do you think you will compete instead? I heard there is going to be a meet in Fort Lauderdale on 04/14. SPF sanction, so you could use knee sleeves or wraps for raw.

Brian, I took that volume idea from reading Rhode's log as well. Like it so far. Feels like training rather than lifting weights.

Great news goals Tank, easy for you in time!!

Thanks Nick. My main goal this year is to hit all-time PR's (in a meet) with my squat and bench. I already hit an all-time PR twice with my deadlift. So we'll see how everything goes, hopefully 2012 will be good to all of us.

With heavier weights and higher reps it almost always becomes a push it for one more vs. cut the set because the form is going type of thing. It is nice keeping things in check with reasonable rep ranges.

Done...It wasn't the day I was looking for, but still not a bad one. It was taking forever to get warmed up and i'm sure it has something to do with it being 30 degrees outside. I got all the required reps, but I was wanting to go for AMAP on my 3rd set of 335. Tomorrow I am squatting and i'm not sure yet if i'm going to start 531 or my program. I might do 531 for this month and then start my program next month.

Yeah it blows, hopefully it will get better.

Today I wore my Tommy Kono bands, they are great for warmth and not so much with rebound. If you want support and rebound I would go with the EFS heavy or super heavy knee sleeves.

IMO, you can use 5/3/1 at any strength levels. A good thing about this program is you can modify it to fit your needs. Right now I'm doing experiments with it to see what I like best.

Done...I am going back to squatting and deadlifting in the same session. So now my training will look like this:
Monday-BP
Tuesday-SQ/DL
Wednesday-REST
Thursday-Upper accessory
Friday-Lower accessory
The main two reasons why I switched back is because I love the idea about getting all the heavy stuff out of the way in the beginning of the week. The other reason is because this is how I trained for my last meet and I had great success doing it. So why not go back to it :)

I think that's a mistake. You should be strong with and without a belt. I think Brian would agree as he trained with John Manly who also told me that. And it helped a lot.

So far I feel pretty good. I think not doing the reps at the end allowed me to pull without feeling wore out. That session took me about 2 hours, which is pretty long. But to me it's worth it. Because now I know that all my heavy work is done for the week.

I did that two summers ago and really liked it Brian. I was repping one set at the end. Did squats, deads, and abs. Only negative was some weeks it took 4 days to be able to walk right again. Did hit good squat and dead numbers in the meet which followed though.

I like it before when I did it and I also hit huge PR's while on it, so why not go back to what works. I might start doing abs afterwards instead of any extras, that way I can start focusing more on my ab strength.

Great bench day bro!!

Just a reminder I would like to catch up in March...Boom U.S.A for 3.5 weeks with the Wife to be.

I may need to do a road trip!

I like the training split getting all the heavy stuff out of the way early in the week. Best wishes with it. A lot of good volume on the lower day!

Well, I have decided to do the RAW United Beau Moore Classic (depending on if they let me wear my EFS knee sleeves) and today was my first week of meet prep, and it didn't go as good as I wanted. I was suppose to do 410 for 3 sets of doubles. But once again, the gym was empty and no one to spot me. So I had to do the left off myself and I couldn't get comfortable. So I did 2 singles and stopped, because those were hard. I'm thinking about going to Golds and doing my bench work for this meet. More then likely i'll still do the meet even if my training for it doesn't go as good as I would like.

It was hard and my form was shot once I lifted off. That's why I'm considering going to Golds Gym and doing my bench work. There are a few people I can get to spot me.

The days I benched there by myself I just put a bench in the power rack and put it back farther under the bar. It made the liftoff for myself easy. And if you can still go for an extra rep, because even if you fail the pins catch it. I cannot lift off more than 225-275 on a regular bench otherwise, because the bar is too far behind my head, but mid-300s to low-400s was easy setting it up this way.

Brian Hopper
01-16-2012, 08:00 PM

Done...A pretty heavy session today and I was pretty beat up after my last set of deads so I left. I went for a 3rd rep on my last set of 635, but missed it due to a very bad rookie mistake. For some f**king reason, I decided to bring my grip in and it threw me off. I was lucky to get my 2 reps that I needed. So next time i'll know to never do that again. This would of been a PR for me, my best triple is 625 x 3 (T&G). My squats went ok, so nothing really to say. The reason why I say "ok" is because I couldn't get comfortable, so I stayed with the same weight and got my reps and sets that I needed.

I did take video and i'll post it up as soon as I can...

Thanks...I'm not gonna lie and say I feel great, lol. My back right now is pretty banged up and not in a good way. I'm having second thoughts about squatting and pulling in the same day. Next week I'll be squatting around 85% and pull around 97-100% so it shouldn't be that bad. After this meet if I decide to stay with SQ/DL in the same day, I'll cycle it with a heavy/light program.

MarcusWild
01-24-2012, 04:54 PM
I don't see a reason why you can't squat and deadlift on the same day. Doing them both at a high intensity is brutal though. You basically did a squat/deadlift meet with short rest time between them. Whichever one you do second, I'd go lighter and keep it to sets of 8-12. Then you can alternate which one you go heavy on each week.

That's the plan after im done with this meet. I don't want to change anything right now since im in the middle of my meet prep. I enjoy squatting and pulling in the same day. But like you said, my second lift (which will more likely be deadlifts) will be for higher reps. Next week when I squat my top working sets will be @ 535 and my pulls will @ 660+. So hopefully that won't be bad.

I don't blame you, since I've been using these shoes I can't go back, lol. They are pretty solid shoes, but they are also my first pair so I have nothing to compare them with. I know Scott Yard wears the same I have and he loves them.

Thanks! I'm trying to build them up slow. I think next week I'll either down and get more reps or go up another 10lbs.

Ed Coan was one of a few great for his time, and well above anyone else in or around the weight classes he competed in, but somebody will be better at the same weight class eventually. I think all the records around now will eventually be crushed in every weight class. Gear for sure, because they will make and allow better gear, but also raw. 50-60 years or so that the sport has been around I don't think is a true indication of human limitations.

Done...Well, im not sure what to say. On the way up I felt something funny going on and not good. I was able to go up in weight with no pain, but it felt sore and I was nervous. I did my working weight for just one set and stopped. It feels more sore then anything. I'm going to put some ice on it in a little bit. I feel really beat up this meet cycle. I have been having some bad pain in my right leg/upper hip area and it hurts just sitting here. Next week will be my last heavy squat session and it'll determine if I'm going to finish this up and compete in March. This sucks, I am in more pain now then I was when I was doing rehab.

I'm sure it wouldn't hurt, but I don't think that's the problem. It's mainly from the surgery and using my right leg more without even noticing it. While doing rehab, I even felt like my right leg would get fatigued faster then the leg I had surgery on. Whatever happened to my arm is feeling alittle better so I'm sure it was nothin major.

Also, since I got my friend to start training with me and if I can keep him coming in, i'm going to get back in gear and do a geared meet late this year or early next year. I'm still not 100%, more like 95% lol. I will keep you guys updated as the year goes on.
