2-3 litres a day is adequate, drinking 4 gallons a day is just a kick in the wallet... If your pee is clear you're well hydrated...

While 3-4 gallons a day may not kill you, it is certainly overkill. Think of how taxing that is on your bladder. I've read that you should drink ~1 ounce for every 2 lbs, so a 250lb guy should drink about a gallon. Remember, you get water from the foods you eat in addition to the liquid you drink.
