An eye for an eye. Am I the only one that thinks this should be the punishment for all crimes, or do you guys agree that if you do something, the same should be done to you?

If you kill someone, you die, if you rape someone, I think you get the point.

Depends on the circumstance. Some cases are too complicated for that.

Even though I'm a great supporter of the death sentence, your idea of "justice" is too simplified and unrealistic... In an "eye for an eye" system (which exists in fundamentalist Muslim countries) the hand on the triger is too damn easy, and thus punishments are unreversable. Not to speak of circumstances which should play a big role when thinking of a proper punishment.

I think that the method in iran are quite effective. You steal, they chop of your hand. You steal one more time, they do it with your other hand, and then you cän't steal anymore. :thumbup:

I think that we should have a "Jugde Dred". that would be much more effective.

OK, from the bleeding heart liberal - I believe in rehabilitation. We just don't do it very well here in the states. I hate the waste of human potential.

One good thing about that way is that is sets the example of what will be done if you do something. The criminal will think twice if he knows he going to get raped too...

I think the real problem with society is that we have a culture where everyone is out to scam everyone else at all levels. Crime is just an extension of this where people are willing to risk prison to meet their selfish needs.

We need a societal evolution and part of me thinks it is indeed happening. And then the other part of me sees television shows like Jerry Springer and Benny Hinn infomercials and wonders WTF is wrong with people?

I'm sure nature will ensure that we find our destiny as a society, it will take time. :)

In the meantime, we need two things:

1. better determination of which criminals can be changed for the better and which can not
2. stiffer punishment for criminals

WTF is the world coming to when a thief who gets trapped in your garage trying to rob you can sue you for damages?!?!?

an eye for an eye is too idealistic. I just took an Ethics class ( which I never thought I would use but hmm college classes can surprise you sometimes) Anyways we discussed this in my class and because this is a decision that is based more on emotion and upbringing rather than fact it is harder to say whether it is right or wrong. Because each person is entitled to their feelings it makes it difficult to say which way is honestly better, but I think that people need to be punished if they do wrong things, yet depending on the severity of the action should depend on the severity of the punishment... also not all rehabilitation works...

rehab works if someone really wants to change. if they arent willing to do this at all it is a huge waste

eye for an eye is too emotion-based. No important decisions should be based on emotion. It's a good concept but definately unpractical. And in certain cases it'd be cruel and unusual punishment. Cutting hand off for stealing is not eye for an eye. I think our justice system is pretty good as it is.

If you've been through the justice system then you'll know that it is pretty frusterating sometimes. Anyways, I think what Cack said was right on. Too often decisions are based upon emotions and not often thought out with the head.
