View Full Version : Bench press sticking point

Today I failed, rather embarassingly, while doing flat BB bench presses. After the 8th rep felt pretty good, I thought "yea, I have one more in me!" A few seconds later my thoughts turned to "UH-OH!!" I got stuck exactly half way up and simply could not finish the rep. Since I didn't have a spotter, I had to poke my head up and ask for a little help while I rested the bar on my chest.

Considering where I got stuck, it that an indication of weak triceps? My routine is:

BB Bench Press
Dumbbell bench press
Hammer Incline Chest Press
Triceps pushdown (in that order).

Should I swap out dips for the BB bench press for a while to really focus on my triceps?

Thanks!

mmm..I think you just failed ;) Always had a spotter when benching people have died that way, its funny cause sometimes you feel like failing and then the spotter just touches the bar with two fingers and you finish the rep...and viceversa those 2grams too heavy can make you bring the bar to your chest on your last rep...

Dude, if you are doing that same routine every time you work bench then you've got to mix things up. Start with the Hammer bench one day and really throw some heavy weight on it. I find that's a good (and safe) way to get your muscles attuned to the heavier weights. You can also really blast your triceps without fear of a caved in chest. But mix it up. Start with incline one day, or start with DB press.

I love having to ask for help. You can barely talk, so you're like "a......lil......help.......please....." In that nice whispering voice ;)

Heheh, that's almost exactly it... I was like " 'scuse me? Little... help?"

Now I won't be so shy about asking for a spot on my last set.

Regarding mixing it up - I'll give it a shot. I'd still like to know where my weakness lies. I had a 3 year hiatus, and I think my arm strength decreased more drastically than my chest.
