View Full Version : The egg - all or whites?

I need to increase my protien in the morning and eggs are a cheap (and easy) source; I just throw 2-4 in with a shake. I always hear about egg whites. In fact that's kind of a bodybuilding mantra "egg whites" "egg whites". Can anyone tell me why I shoudn't just eat the whole egg? I've heard that the cholesterol in eggs isn't that bad. If you have a link to a good website I'd like to see it. :read:

Eat the whole egg. More then half the protien of an egg is in the yoke.

Eat the whole egg unless your watching your fat intake, each one has abuot 6g per yoke. Also, are you cooking your eggs before you put them into your shakes?
Raw eggs can give you salamanella (sp)

Thanks guys. I'll chow down the whole thing. I have no problems chuggin them raw either so I can do that to when I'm being lazy. As for salamanella (sp) I've drunk lots in the past and never gotten sick. I have heard you can just run them under hot water but I'm not sure if that's a wives tale or what.

I dont think salamanella (sp) is something to mess with though. I'm not sure what the symptoms are, but it seems to be regarded as a notorious disease. Maybe that's just because it's easy to get if your not careful. It's something you might want to look into a little more if your going to eat them raw though.

Ok, I checked and it's spelled salmonella. :read: I will see what the web has on the subject. I know it's not a disease though, like cancer or something. It just makes you sick. They say that most times you think you have the flu that it's actually food poisoning from from sources such as salmonella. :drooling:

Damn, eatting raw eggs isn't sounding too good. Unfortunately I don't always follow doctor's orders. First time I get sick after eating raw eggs I'll stop. :evillaugh:

If you wash the outside of the shell thoroughly and make sure there are no cracks in the eggs then you should be fine with salmonella.....although I'm still not quite sure on how the human body does with digesting raw eggs.......you're better off cooking them bro..........

salmonella: sit on the throne in agony for 48 hours with a bucket in front of you. Both sides blazing. sometimes you get a 5 or 10 minute break when there's nothing coming out of either end. After about 48 hours you'll be able to keep juice down maybe (if you can make it to the store to get the juice, you'll be very tired). After 72 hours you'll probably just be tired for a couple days from the virus.
At least that was my experience. Undercooked turkey BTW.
Egg whites contain about 3g of protein and the yolk contains about 3g of protein and about 6g of fat. Nice thing about just whites is that they are pretty much pure protein. Yolks contain about 2g of saturated fat and 2.5g of monounsaturated fat and about 1g of polyunsaturated fat.
