I just got some Designer protein bars, matled mucle flavour and on the site that I bought them from they were stated at 7g of carbs. I got them yesterday and looked at the label and it said 25g of carbs! Well I contacted the site that i got them from and was informed that the old labels stating 7g of carbs are eing replaced with the 25 labels since they reflect the glycerol that is in these bars as carbs.

Now my quesiton is, are all low carb bars like this? Is seems like it is, I had some Myoplex low carb ones before which stated 3g but I think its more if you consider the glycerol.

I was told that the carbs from glycerol are not as bad as sugar carbs, but are there any bars out there with real low carbs, incl. glycerol etc??
Thanks!!!

I asked a similar question and never really got an answer. They state a low # of carbs as "net impact carbs" and the other more substantial # as of no consequence.

Well...I've been wondering as well...and have a little more info to shed *some* light on this issue:

The net impact carbs are an advertising term for carbs that have little to no effect on insulin levels. Fiber and glycerine do not raise insulin levels to any significant effect and are, therefore, not counted in NET IMPACT CARBS but are still shown on the label because the law states they must.

I am still trying to determine whether glycerol/ine and sugar alcohols are still uptaked into the cells though and used like other carbs for energy. Obviously, fiber is not.

Anyone with any more info -- please let us know!

I read that sugar alcohols (glycerol included) are still absorbed into the body, but you can think of them as low GI. Thats why a lot of food geared towards diabetics use sugar alcohols, it doesn't cause a big increase in insulin.

Hope this helps.

Actually it only raises more questions...mainly:

If glycerols/sug alcohols are absorbed, are they to be counted as 'carbs' - ESPECIALLY on keto diets???
?Anyone?

I would count them if I were you. The way I see it, if you're going to go on an extreme diet like keto, you should be able to handle giving up certain foods and accepting the limited range of foods to eat. Protein bars I would consider out.

I'd like to hear other's views on this.

this is a marketing scam used by the supplement industry. Big suprise huh. Glycerol suposedly does not raise insuline levels but it is absorbed and used for energy. Look at carbs from glycerol and other "non-impact" carbs at low GI but they should be counted.

Honestly - I don't mind the limited food choices on a keto diet...and protein bars have NOT been one of those due to the carb issues. I was just *hoping* there was an additional item to add to my restricted menu. I guess I know now that there isn't.

i believe sugar alcohols do have calories albeit reduced amounts. 1 g of sugar alcohols has a little less than 2 calories if i remember correctly. they come from the waste products of digestion by bacteria in the intestine or something like that.

Fine print on these say that the carb count on the label does not include glycerol and sugar alcohol content.

So these aren't TRULY low carb either.
