View Full Version : how soon after i lift should i drink protein and take carbs?

I was reading on my bottle of whey protetin and it says take 1 hour after workout.

However i read on bodybuilding.com that there is a 30 min window of oppurtunity when you work out and that should be used to replenish your body.

Which is it?

I would also like to know what you think of, immediately after the workout taking 16 oz of apple juice mixed with creatine and then take 12 oz water mixed with my whey protein drink. all in the first 20 mins after a workout?

What kind of sugar is in the apple juice? You should shoot for mostly dextrose (same as glucose) and malodextrin for post workout, to replace muscle glycogen. Here is what I do...

immediately after workout = 50 grams dextrose and malo combined (from Smarties, search for Smarties on this board, I posted a link with nutrition info somewhere)

when I get home ('bout 20 minutes later) = 1 serving of NLarge2 which has whey, more dextrose and malodextrin (I think).

I loved your smarties idea natedogg... Ive been eating them for the past few weeks right after my workouts.. and then a protein shake not long after

hmmm im not sure what kind of sugar is in it. I was just thinking apple juice because this has 56 grams of carbs in 16 0z that i mix with creatine that will really draw the creatine in i think.

ya warrior that is what i did today. I live 1 hour away from the gym but this is what i did..

finished workout and 5 mins later took protein shake

drove home one hour

as soon as i got home i drank 12 ounces gatorade with creatine

cooked for 30 mins

ate 8 oz skinless chicken breast, 1 C rice a roni, 1 ear of corn

oh ya and 1 hour before working out i has a turkey sandwich.

is what i did good or bad?

i would say asap also but try to get it in within 30 minutes

I also went to a wine making store and bought 2 big bags of dextose. Mixed it with water and a scoop of iced tea mix... mmmmmm sugary....
