Budiak, that is the most random comment I have ever seen in my journal. You should win some kind of award.

Paul, in my journal, I am the only one that hits on girls. Come on, now, this is like, my turf, I get women here, I can't have you throwin salt in my game.

I did bench today!

Close grip bench press:

135 x 12, 225 x 12, 275 x 2, 315 x 1, 335 x 1, 360 x hmmm....

360, I mighta gotten. Stalled at the sticking point, but still had strength left. Spotter touched it, but didn't lift... hard to say. Either way, there was more strength than last time I tried it, which is what I'm going for, right?

Regular bench press:

225 x 10, 245 x 6, 265 x 4

Took these slow, didn't come anywhere near failure. lol. Clearly. Shoulder felt a little weird at 265. I'm not pushing these! (Which sucks, because I can feel an insane amount of power with this grip)

DB flyes:

70's x 10, 70's x 10

Very strong.

One handed pushdowns:

160 x 10/10, 150 x 10/10

A little bit of elbow discomfort.

DB front raises:

50's x 10/10, 55's x 10/10

Encouraging that I can start pushing these a little again. A vein showed up in my left delt. What does this tell me? I'm losing weight still. doh.

Diet- excellent, though about 1,000 calories too low.

Sleep- 7 hours.

That's it, kids.

Quick update, hoping the lights don't go out again and make me lose my post.

Today I remembered that I occasionally need to lift, so I went in for some deadlifts.

Deadlifts:

135 x 6, 225 x 6, 315 x 6, 405 x 2, 495 x 1, 655 x .75

Up to the knees. Should have had the lockout. Still got some lower back fatigue, probably from excess rucking. Yark. BUT! That's as far up (~3-4" from lockout) that I've ever gotten it, and on a sumo, that means I own it. I pulled up an easy 525 and then worked up and down through that ROM, and felt the tightness/soreness in my lower back, so that's what's holding me up. Next week, that PR is MINE.

Did lateral raises, 60's, 55's 55's, then bent-over laterals with the 55's for a few sets. Decided to get out of there before conditions got any worse.

Diet- good!

Sleep- 8 hours.

Does that mean what I think it means?

Power's blinking here too. No classes today though! :D Duke's cancelled too, right? It doesn't seem too bad here so far. Ah well. I hope it STAYS like this and doesn't get any worse.

Alex.V
09-19-2003, 08:00 AM
No, it doesn't. Dirty girl.

Classes were NOT canceled... though we lost power from 4 PM to 9:30 AM.... god, I hope it stays on. Matt picked up some girl from downstairs, brought her up, we all sat around, drank, talked, tried to get her to forget about her husband.

;)

Okay, I'd just like to point out something about my deadlift... my problem seems to be, now, getting it from knee level to lockout. I do believe, after messing around with lighter weight, that it's mostly been fatigue and a slightly overtrained lower back that's preventing me from exerting much power in that ROM.

Now, everyone get in a sumo stance. Hold yourself as if the bar is right above your knees. Now straighten up. Repeat several times.

....

I am proof that high rep work does not increase maximum power output.

that is all.

Isaac Wilkins
09-19-2003, 08:03 AM
Except for the high-rep rucking, which can make for a painful practice.

:D

Alex.V
09-20-2003, 03:29 PM
Yes indeed.

I did bench today. It wasn't bad. My wrists are weak. I am relying too much on the wraps, and when I lose it, I lose it, and I missed a bench I shouldn't have.

Close grip bench press:

135 x 10, 225 x 8, 275 x 2, 315 x 1, 335 x 1, 365 x barely missed.

Should have had it. Should have had it well. But, pushed past the sticking point, and my wrists started rolling back. Couldn't save it, had no drive, power loss.

dammit.

Regular bench:

225 x 10

Felt a little uncomfortable.

Paused bench, 3" off the chest (1-2" below my sticking point)

315 x 3 seconds x 3

Not bad, pretty easy actually.

DB flyes:

70's x 10, 70's x 10

Rah.

One-handed tricep pushdowns:

160 x 10/10, 160 x 8/8, 170 x 6/6

Decent... actually felt more power here than usual, and no elbow discomfort.

Did some front raises, shoulder whined at me. So I stopped.

And that was my ENTHRALLING update.

Good news, though.. no physics test on tuesday. :D So all's I gotta do is study for bio on monday. Which I have done no reading for whatsoever.

Hahn- thanks much. :) Paused bench... strictly for the sticking point. Used them to great success back when my sticking point was right off my chest, now that it's moved I'm hoping they'll do it for me again.

Powerman- How's that?

Midee- you do NOT have the lock on wings and beer. :D

Molly- :hump:

I am in such pain. So I decided I'd be just fine lifting before practice. It was maybe not such a great idea.

Upon reflection, though... I love it. :D

Close grip bench:

135 x 12, 225 x 10, 275 x 2, 315 x 1, 335 x 1, 365 x lost balance.

Dammit all to hell. Plenty of power, but the bar drifted to the right and I lost it. I never, ever lost balance on regular grip. So I did these again.

Regular grip:

225 x 12

Easy as hell. But my shoulder told me to f*ck off when I asked it if I could go heavier.

Bi-angular row:

10 plates + 50 x 5, 8 plates x 12, 8 plates x 8

Not bad.

Lat pulldowns:

Stack x 12, stack x 8, stack x 6, stack x 6

Something like that. Just burned out on these.

Concentration curls with 50's for 2 sets, hammer curls with 90's for 2 sets.

Then... practice. A few passing drills for the first 30 minutes, then an hour and a half of rucking/mauling drills. Non-stop. In between vomitously brutal drills, we were allowed to jog around the field. The border of the field is all hilly. it was fun.

I got elbowed in the nose, kneed in the temple, kicked in the face, had a guy land on my ankle and twist it, and then I smashed heads with a guy running full tilt.

But, the highlight was sending a guy holding a bag flying on to his back. He was about 200 pounds. He was in the air for a good six or seven feet. To everyone who was posting in that thread in the powerlifting section, figure out the force, assuming theta was about 30 degrees off horizontal.

nerds.

And that was it. Now, I will lie down and die. Every muscle in my body was cramping. Need more gatorade.

Diet- not enough calories, considering energy expenditure.

Sleep- 8 hours.

Alex.V
09-24-2003, 02:24 PM
Justin- It's a grad school team, not really official, not really unofficial. Talent has waxed and waned over the years, right now the team's got a bunch of experienced players, and a whole bunch of total newbies (though we're enthusiastic, and not in TERRIBLE shape... ;) )

Borris- Wish I could. I just need to be better about the calories, I think I need a steady intake throughout my lifting session if I'm going to survive practice afterwards.

And yeah, it was a damn good practice.

Fuzz- nope. A lot of protective gear is banned. Most you'll get is that cloth headgear, a mouthguard, and the occasional neoprene knee brace. MAYBE small foam/cloth shoulderpads.

And yes, because it's fun. :D Plus, I get to hurt people.

evolu2art

Okay, now that I can sit down, it's update time.

Mixed bag, but I'm actually very pleased with my deadlifting. I missed the lift by about 1.5", now that I look at it. Basically, my back fatigued as I pulled up, and I just couldn't get my hips under it. Good thing about this is that I know I'm strong there, and it just needs a little work. Other good thing is, when I had that block at 655 a bunch of months back, it didn't even come off the ground. Now, I got 660 WAY off the ground, and thought I had it. So the mental block is gone, and the path to 700 seems pretty clear. When I barely missed 655 last week, not only was it slower, but I also didn't get it up as far as this week. So I'm getting stronger. Next week I will nail this weight. I'm so close.

Deadlifts:

135 x 6, 225 x 4, 315 x 4, 405 x 3, 495 x 1, 660 x 0.85

lol. Yeah, like I said, tore it up, didn't even doubt I had it.. maybe that was the problem. I was thinking ****, this is easy... um. no. It wasn't. So on my leg day this sunday, I'm going to do some good AMs, maybe stiff leggeds... and strengthen my lower back a bit. It's doing some static work, but I'm really not putting it under enough stress. Previous lower back pain was not overtraining, it was straining. (ooh, rhyme). So a little bit of work, and I should be able to power through that lockout. I feel like I could take 7 plates off the ground right now.

Anyway, nice to feel like I can progress again.

After this, figured I was done. I'm going to keep my deadlift days short and sweet, since I got practice right after.

Lateral raises with 60's and 50's, 2 sets of 10 each.... bent-over laterals, one set of 10 with the 55's. Did some hanging leg raises, and then two sets of slow calf raises with the stack to finish off. Went home, guzzled a shake, ran off to practice.

Which was good. I feel like I'm responding to the demands pretty well... the initial jog had me heaving a bit, I think I was still depleted, but during the stretching I think the shake (and the gatorade I chugged) made it into my system, and I had enough juice to keep me going. Drills weren't very tough today, mostly just mauling against the bags, working on stripping the ball and getting into position. Did about half an hour of actual play....which was great, except my lack of experience kinda showed. Learn as you go, I guess. I've finally got a feel of the game, and once I had it down, I made some pretty good plays. Started cramping up in the last 10 minutes, which is a huge improvement over previous practices. lol. Few more weeks, I'll be in shape. Just gotta keep the calories up. Floating around 6k right now, and maintaining weight.

Diet- good.

Sleep- 7.5 hours.

And this weekend should be decently busy. Got a physics test that I plan on tearing up, I been slack so far this semester, and I need to sit down and get my priorities straight.

That's it.

Wow... good job with the 660!

I daresay that if you pulled a 645 or so completely, that'd do wonders for the mental block too.

I've pulled a 650 completely in the past, Scott. :)

But thanks, guys. it feels nice to know I can progress on this lift again.... it's still my favorite, and the one I'm supposed to have a talent for.

Hey, good for you, sugar! I'm glad you finally busted through your block. State record, here you come!

Oh yeah, my new gym has a bunch of people who train Westside and compete in PL. They just did one like....3 weeks ago? Anyhow, you should come over and work out with me now! There's power racks and everything. And PLENTY of plates. Even enough plates for a patented Leg Press Strip Set of Death!

I think the PL crew trains Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday between 1 pm and 4 pm, or something. Make a note of that. And also, I'm going to go the next time they do a meet and check it out - I'll let you know about that, too, if you want to come with.

Don't let those rugby thugs hit you in the face. I like having to work to stay prettier than you. It keeps me on my toes. ;)

If you're missing at the top like you have the past two weeks, try some heavy shrugs.

Alex.V
09-27-2003, 03:38 PM
MMN- it'd be almost worth it to laugh at a guy in a cheerleader outfit. But really, that's terribly scary.

Heatherer- that sounds awesome. Of course, I couldn't deadlift... I think I need to be in my zone for that. The coolness of the gym might be outweighed by the unfamiliarity. I should probably get over that, huh? Still, ****, that'd be cool as hell.

And you know, even if they do some serious damage to my face, I'll still be damn pretty.

Kenn- gracias, senor. I can't wait either. been long enough, dammit.

Matt- good idea. I just need to be careful... as it is now, holding heavy weights is a hell of a strain on my system. Still got an abdominal strain holding me back, sore ankles, etc... so the idea of doing heavy shrugs with a weight where I'd actually be getting some benefit makes my body scream in anticipation. Scream in the bad sense.

Chest today. Not bad. Decided to feel out my shoulder a little. Wasn't feeling too strong, missed the f*cking close grip AGAIN. But whatever.

Close grip bench press:

135 x 12, 225 x 10, 275 x 2, 315 x 1, 335 x 1, 365 x barely missed, 315 x 1, 315 x 1

Getting a little stronger each time. Balance was good, just couldn't lock the damn thing out. Bah.

Moved out the grip... triceps were already shot, though, so I'm sure that, fresh, I could have rocked these:

Bench press:

225 x 1
255 x 1
275 x 1
315 x 1
335 x 1

Stopped here. Nice to push halfway heterosexual weight with my real grip again. Needs some practice, though. Were I not so beat, and not so out of practice with the grip, I think I would have had a hell of a lot more in me.

DB flyes:

70's x 10, 70's x 10

Took them slow.

One-handed pushdowns:

170 x 8/8, 160 x 10/10

Just burnt myself out, wasn't feeling up for trying the stack. Which I should be doing, since 8-10 reps is a bit much.

DB front raises:

45's x 10/10, 50's x 10/10

Shoulders were feeling good during these. I might be close to 100%. :D

And that was it. Did a little ab work, stretched my sore muscles, prodded my various injuries and decided I'm a mess.

Diet- good.

Sleep- 8.5 hours.

So this weekend I got physics study. My goal is to actually do more than 30 minutes of it today. That'll be impressive.

rookiebldr
09-27-2003, 04:21 PM
335, halfway heterosexual weight? :( I don't even think of a term for mine.

I see you're doing front shoulders on chest day. Are you also hitting them on Thrusday (DL/shoulder day)?

Alex.V
09-28-2003, 02:22 PM
Jeff, I've always done anterior delts on chest/bench day. I do posterior on deadlift/shoulder day, along with lateral raises, which hit more or less everything. The whole idea, I guess, was to bench, then work the composite parts separately. It stuck. :)

Leg day. And it's been a while. Decided to kinda take it easy, see what I had in me, and try not to kill my lower back too much.

Squats:

135 x 10, 225 x 8, 315 x 6, 405 x 2, 455 x 1, 495 x 2, 315 x 3, 315 x 3

Not bad at all, the 495 x 2 had a LITTLE assist on the second rep, apparently I slowed almost to a stop and my spotter touched under my chest. No big deal, this is better than I've done in a while.

Good mornings:

135 x 8, 225 x 8, 315 x 6, 315 x 4

Also been a while. These were rough, but invigorating in a strange way.

Deadlift lockouts, starting about 1.5" above the knee. I guess this was about a 5" ROM at first, which became more like 2-3" when the bar started warping on later sets. lol.

495 x 2, 585 x 2, 675 x 2, 765 x 1, 765 x 1

Nothing spectacular, amazing how easy it is when you don't have that extra 12-14 inches of motion to worry about. :D

Did some hamstring curls and then stretched 'em, along with some explosive sets of calf raises. And then I left.

Diet- very good.

Sleep- 8 hours.

And it's, again, physics time!

Dedicated
09-28-2003, 03:09 PM

Alex.V
09-30-2003, 05:31 PM
BoB, Dedicated, thanks guys. It's funny, there's still no satisfaction in warping it over such a small ROM. On squats or full deads, though, that's a different story. :D

Scott- used to think that worked. Definitely changed my mind. Makes me too damn weak off the floor... but if I did both kinds, my lower back would hate me. I won't be doing lockouts more than once every few weeks, they're just too much stress.

Wikked, thank you. And if you want to see those, I'd say you have to go a few pages back. Maybe even a few months back. But they're excellent. :D

Today was kind of a mixed bag as well... I didn't sleep well sunday night, and I had a physics test this morning, so I'm exhausted. Also feeling a little under the weather, so I didn't push it too hard. Just did a lil' bench, a lil' back, and got out of there.

Close grip bench press:

135 x 10, 225 x 8, 275 x 2, 315 x 1, 335 x 1

Nothin special. 335 was a bit slow, so I decided to just call it a day there.

Regular grip bench press:

275 x 3, 315 x 1

Shoulder a little sore, I guess pushing it a bit on saturday is what did it.

Close grip bench press:

225 x 8

Fast.

Bi-angular rows:

10 plates x 10, 10 plates x 4 (yanked something in my groin... not badly), 8 plates x 8 or 10.

Something like that. I was just feeling beat at this point, and kinda wanted to go home.

Concentration curls with the 55's, three sets of 8 per arm. One set of reverse grip pulldowns, stack for 12.

Diet- Complete and utter crap. I mean, decent calories, but... food choices SUCKED.

Sleep- 5.5 broken hours last night, 5 broken hours the night before. :(

Alex.V

Irritatin, ain't it?

I don't feel like doing a full update today... it was deadlift day, which went decently, except I was a little out of it. Sleep sucked all week, and I wasn't psyched for it at all. Missed 660... again. But it came up a good bit (not as far as last week), so it's not a failure. I'm just a little off. Frustrating, but whatever. Next week I'll see how I feel when I'm working up to it, 495 just kinda creeped up, which was a bad sign. If 495 does the same next week, I'll go for 660 again. If it blasts up, I'll try 665. I'm so close to 7 plates, +/- 10-15 pounds is psychological.

Did some lateral raises with the 55's and some bent-over laterals with the same. Started talking to this girl, Anthony threw salt in my game by dragging me over for a spot.

(just kiddin, bro).

Other than that... some hanging leg raises. And got out of there. I feel a little leaner, since I do look maybe slightly larger in the upper body, and weight's about the same (between 235 and 240).

Rugby practice was easy today... it's mostly business school guys, and they've got exams this week and next, so not many people showed. Fine by me, we played an hour of touch... which was a sh*tload more running than being a forward normally involves. Good times.

And that's about it. I'm going to get more sleep this week, eat a bit better, and focus on lowering my stress level just a little.

Diet- hehehehe. Nonexistent.

Sleep- 8.5 hours last night... averaging 5 the three nights before.

So true.

So, 365 on close grips is my nemesis. Came DAMN close today, maybe within a few inches of lockout, before freezing and needing some fingertip help. Dammit. Shoulder was also not too thrilled with me, so I didn't push it on the regular grips.

CGBP:

135 x 10, 225 x 8, 275 x 2, 315 x 1, 335 x 1, 365 x .9, 315 x 1, 275 x 5

No, really, 365 is a whore. Went up pretty fast and smooth, but then, as I pushed through my sticking point, it slowed.. and I KICKED MY LEGS OUT. This ruined my core. Froze, needed help. I suck.

Regular grip bench press:

245 x 1, 275 x 1, 315 x 1

Iffy. Stopped.

DB flyes:

70's x 10, 70's x 12

Easy. Took them slow, though, to baby the shoulder a little.

One-handed tricep pushdowns:

180 x 12/12, 150 x 10/10, 150 x 10/10

Woo. A PR. In a stupid lift. But still, it's nice to know that my triceps are indeed getting stronger. Much stronger.

DB front raises:

50's x 10/10, 50's x 10/10

Very nice, zero pain.

Diet- pretty tight. Half a pitcher of Sam Adams does a body good.

Sleep- 8 hours.

And that's really about it. Oh, Molly informed me that my sig is vomitously self-aggrandizing. But she's clearly madly in love with me, so her opinion carries no weight in this matter. Nor should it. Typical pushy female. Where's my belt?

Leg day! Not a heavy one, giving my lower back a rest. Next week will be heavy squats and deadlift lockouts again. I will alternate.

Squats, leaving the knee wraps in the bag.

135 x 6, 225 x 6, 315 x 3, 405 x 1, 405 x 1, 425 x 1, 425 x 1

Brought in my stance.

425 x doh.

I am NOT a narrow stance squatter. lol. It's almost funny.

My emphasis on all these was form and tightness... balance was key. They felt pretty good, a little tightness in my hams, though, and my lower back was whining a little.

Leg press strip set:

22 plates x 1
20 plates x 3
18 plates x 5
16 plates x 5
14 plates x 5
12 plates x 5
10 plates x 5
8 plates x 5
6 plates x 5

Ow. My quads were so swollen that I couldn't bend my legs completely. It's been far too long since I did these.

Calf raises:

Stack x 18, stack x 16

Hardest part was keeping my legs straight. lol.

That was it. I had NOTHING left.

Diet- pretty damn good.

Sleep- 8 hours. I love weekends.

That's about it. Now, food, physics, bio lab report. awesome.

Mm, nice and slow in updating. I squished my thumb adjusting a piece of equipment (the row machine) yesterday, so typing is not fun. I'll keep it short.

Close grip bench is my nemesis. I had 365. It's silly. It was going up. I halted an inch or two from lockout. Got a fingertip touch, blasted it up from there. BAH! WHY??????!??!??

I'm okay, though.

CGBP:

135 x 10, 225 x 10, 275 x 2, 315 x 1, 335 x 1, 365 x almost

Pfffft.

Paused close grips:

315 x 1.5

First one was excellent. Full 3 count at the bottom, slow (jonathan counted), second one had a good long paused, hitched halfway up, it was made tough for me to lock it out. Good.

Regular bench:

225 x 12

Easy. Just practicing the motion.

Bi-angular row:

10 plates x 7, 8 plates + 50 x 8, 8 plates x 10

Thumb. Ouch. Made gripping hard. Body was aching at this point.

Concentration curls with 60's, 55's and 50's. 8 reps per set, 1 set each. Then I left.

Diet- damn good!

Sleep- 8 hours that night, 5.5 last night. :(

They are rather delicious.

I'm still of two minds about the best way to do 'em... with help unloading or without... most often I don't have spotters so there's no choice but there's a lot to be said for the minor feeling of dread you get when you rack the weight *just* long enough for people to tear off a pair of 45s and then you gotta start pushing again! :D

Alex.V
10-08-2003, 10:42 AM
Wikked, yes that is indeed what it is. :D

I don't rack when the plates are removed, I just straighten my legs and take a few deep breaths. The dread is unbelievable... but really, at this point, it's the worst right before I start. I KNOW that I'm feeling fine; actually feeling pretty good at that moment, but there's the knowledge that, in 2.5 minutes, I'm going to be a twitching, beaten, exhausted, nauseated heap. Fun! :D

Yeah, missed 665, got pissed, immediately stripped the weights down to 585, then yanked it off the floor, even though I was already hurting. Dammit.

Don't have much time for an update, need to run out. Up on Cape Cod until tuesday night, had a workout in a different gym... did a upper-body workout, lower back is still hurting, so legs will be skipped this week.

Close grip bench press:

135 x 12, 225 x 12, 275 x 3, 315 x 1, 335 x 1, 315 x 3

Kept these kinda easy, the bar and rack are crappy and unstable at this place.

Regular grip bench press:

275 x 3 for 4 quick sets, 275 x 8

Felt decent, no real discomfort, just stretching out. Was happy that 275 went up that many times considering it was after a few heavy sets already, and my diet's been lacking. I think I'm down about 4-5 pounds of weight in the last few days, mostly glycogen, so I'm a little depleted.

Hammer strength bench machine..

3 pps x 10, 4 pps x 2, 3 pps x 8

Wow, I was already tired. 4 plates felt unreal, I was so tanked. Blah.

Hammer strength iso-something row. Horizontal row. Whatever.

5 pps x 8, 5 pps x 7, 5 pps x 10

Not bad... easier than the bi-angular, but still killed my back. Very happy.

Finished off with concentration curls, front raises, and a few sets of one handed pushdowns.

Need to focus on getting more calories in here, as long as they're free. Sleep's been excellent, it's amazing what having actual walls will do to let you sleep for more than 4-5 hours without being woken up. I've become such a light sleeper, I hate it... :( For somebody who used to be able to sleep through people using chainsaws outside my window, it's a rather depressing development when the sound of a cough will bring me out from any stage of sleep.

Anyway! I need to get more calories in, this will be a bit of recuperation time. I should be ready to go when I get back to NC.

And that's about it.

Go see Kill Bill.

No. Are they that pathetically bad? :(

Alex.V
10-16-2003, 06:27 PM
I'm doing something new with deadlifts. I'm going to pick a weight to try for, I'll slowly work my way up to it during a workout, then keep attempting it week after week until I get it. 5 pounds is so small a percentage difference that it's almost meaningless, and as long as I'm successfully pulling something somewhat significant every week, I'll get stronger.

Deadlifts:

135 x 5, 225 x 5, 315 x 5, 405 x 2, 495 x 1, 585 x 1, 675 x miss, 495 x 1

Not bad. 675 had some bar bend. I was too casual about it, though. I could tell that I wasn't engaged fully when I started pulling, and by the time I did (which gave enough bar bend that I think it was almost floating) I was tanked. 585 was damn easy, though, and my back held up okay (even thought it was a little sore). So yes, I'll keep trying for this.

Lateral raises:

60's x 10, 55's x 10, 50's x 10, 50's x 10

Not too bad, my shoulder's feeling good. These might actually be helping my delts grow again. I'm somewhat happy about that. I think I look a little bigger, even though I've lost a few pounds.

Bent-over lateral raises:

55's x 10, 50's x 8

These always make me dizzy.

Did some hanging leg raises and calf raises.

That was about it. I do like this new plan... No backing down until I get to where I'm going. 585 is heavy enough that I'm getting in at least one successful heavy dead every week, and eventually I'll get my head in the right place (and my form tight enough) that 7 plates will come up. After that, who knows. 700?

Diet- pretty good. Cals have been lower lately, but not terribly off where they should be.

Sleep- 8 hours, give or take.

Alex.V
10-19-2003, 10:42 AM
Had a decent workout yesterday, it wasn't too inspired, but my shoulder was feeling a little funny. Odd, considering it was fine on thursday.

Close grip bench press:

135 x 10, 225 x 10, 275 x 2, 315 x 1, 335 x 1

Decided I'd stop there and hit up the wide grip.

225 x 4, 275 x 1, 315 x 1, 335 x 1

Felt a little weird... Not difficult, just uncomfortable.

Close grip:

245 x 8 x 3

Just finished off with these... I don't know why there was discomfort today, maybe I've been pushing it a little harder than I thought.

DB flyes:

70's x 10, 70's x 10

Excitement!

One-handed pushdowns:

160 x 10/10, 160 x 11/10

These are getting obscenely easy.

Front raises:

55's x 10/10, 50's x 10/10

Decided to see if these would cause shoulder issues. Nope. :D

It's growth hormone time, I think. Damn my shoulder. Damn it damn it damn it.

Met this girl in the gym, Jonathan and I were watching her do these obscenely good squats, then move to fronts and perfect SLDLs. Turns out, she works in the athletic department in some function, a good friend of hers is a strength coach and powerlifter.. and her goal is to increase her squat. her hours are odd, but I gave her my e-mail, hopefully we'll get the chance to work out sometime and work on some things. She seems pretty damn knowledgeable, it's always good to have somebody to bounce ideas off of.

And that was that.

Diet- too low in calories. As per usual.

Sleep- 7-8 hours, but broken.

lol. Yeah, frustration at its finest...

Did a rather brief leg day, squat focused, gave my back a break. Not bad, though, for yet another sub-max day.

Squats:

135 x 6, 225 x 5, 315 x 3, 405 x 1, 455 x 1, 495 x 1, 405 x 1

These were all very easy, I felt good for another 30-40 on the heavy set... should be more, of course, but given how off my squats have felt lately, I'll take it.

Exploding squats:

315 x 1, 365 x 1, 405 x 1

Again, very easy. Legs felt good today, nice explosion, even from below parallel.

SLDLs:

405 x 8

That was it for my back. Did these very slow and controlled, and my back still complained.

Did some sets of 25 with the stack for calf raises, then stretched a bunch and got out of there. I'm liking these short and sweet leg days, they don't wipe me out for as many days as my old ones used to. Will they be effective in building up leg strength? That evaluation will be made based on where my deadlift is in a few months. :D

Diet- Meh. Cheeseburgers, beer, cheese fries, an odd protein shake, etc. Yet I'm still getting leaner, yet appearing a little more muscular. Go figure.

Sleep- 1 + 5 + 2 hours.

And that's it.

What are you worried about leg strength anyway, since we all know you only lift for looking aesthetically pleasing in those thongs.

Clearly I'm already there.

Thanks, Wikked. :D

I did a lil' chest, a lil' back... I felt strong as **** until I tried 365. BLAH. And that wasn't really tough, I just... stopped. Ech.

Close grip bench press:

135 x 12, 225 x 10, 275 x 2, 315 x 1, 335 x 1, 365 x pfft, 315 x 1

315 felt like nothing, 335, I felt like I had 40+ more pounds in me, easy... 365 was simple until I hit my sticking point. Then it froze. Quickly unloaded the 25's, and nailed 315. Of course, I slowed at the sticking point AGAIN.

Blargh.

Bi-angular row:

10 plates x 8, 8 plates + 30 x 10, 8 plates x 10

These weren't really even challenging. I probably could have hit 10 plates for 10 if my stomach wasn't hurting from the pad. Again, felt so damn strong, and don't really know why.

Pulldowns, close neutral grip:

Stack x 12

Lats were a little sore, and still had rugby awaiting me.

Did some concentration and hammer curls, and called it a day.

Rugby practice was relatively lax.. the business school is on break this week, so about 3/4 of the team was absent. i.e., 8 guys showed. And I realized something. Some of them are fast, damn fast. We have some backs with amazing speed.

And I can smoke every one of them in a sprint, save for one. Turned the corner on guys who train for speed, who are 80 pounds lighter than me. My problem, though... agility. I can't stop quickly, I can't do quick direction changes, and honestly I'm just not used to moving fast. It's hell on my ankles, knees, and back. Somehow, I need to get my agility up. So... *gasp*, I may be doing some agility training soon. Otherwise, speed don't really count for all that much. Granted, my job is to run THROUGH people, but it IS nice to be able to get around a pack, or find a gap. That's what'll make me a good player, not just a freight train. FUN!

Diet- complete crap, yet I'm bigger and leaner, so whatever.

Sleep- 6.5 hours. Need more tonight.

You complain about you sleep? HA. What a baby.

Try coming down to 331 for a week where it's 6 workouts a week (so 5 more than you do) all on about 4 hours of sleep.

Fuzz... Nobody would like that more than me.

Anthony... I don't think I need even deign to reply... :p

Deadlifts were yesterday.. I was feeling like ass going in, I slept like crap all week and have NOT been eating enough. I had low expectations, which were met. In that I expected to have a ****ty workout, and I did. But there were a few plusses.

Deadlifts:

135 x 3, 225 x 3, 315 x 3, 405 x 2, 495 x 2, 585 x 1, 675 x nope.

Lower back was in pain on 585. No focus, I was actually fighting to keep my eyes open during my workout. Sucks. Ah well, I won't be deadlifting until the saturday after this, hopefully with added motivation. :D

Basically cut it from there... did lateral raises, start with the 65's, then moving to the 50's... then some bent-over laterals, along with some absolutely brutal hanging leg raises. Did 14 regular, then 15 total that were done one and a half style... up all the way, halfway down, hold, back up, hold, all the way down. one. So my abs were sore as hell.

Rugby was excellent. Was probably the last practice with a skeleton of a team. b-school kids should be back from fall break next week. Still, did some drills, played a good 45 minutes of fast touch. It was good... smoked some guys, chased down some of our faster backs, actually managed to make a few good moves this time around.

And I'm really spent. Drank too much last night, but made a smart decision.

Diet- too few calories, too much alcohol.

Sleep- 8 two nights ago, 4 last night. :(

re: agility training

what kind of cleats are you wearing? Especially for bigger guys, wearing better gear can help you get the traction you need to get the COD you want.

Getting some additional support for your ankles probably ain't a bad plan as well... are you taping up?

Big o Boy
10-26-2003, 07:06 PM
Geez, I didn't read your journal on purpose for awhile, come back and you still can't hit that close-grip press. AHHHH!

your my hero.

Alex.V
10-28-2003, 06:02 PM
BoB- I hate you. Die.

Cal- I'm using old football cleats now, I've got some high top rugby cleats on order, but they're taking forever to get here. I've taped my ankles before, back during football, and the hit to my mobility isn't worth it to me. Fine if you're running patterns and doing the occasional direction change, but it limits my off the ground speed too much, which is huge in this sport.

I did chest and back today!

It was oh so exciting.

Close grip bench press:

135 x 12, 225 x 10, 315 x 1, 335 x 1, 355 x 1, 375 x ALMOST

Smoked 355, 375 was very tight, spotter said he gave only a tiny bit of assist. I could have probably had 5 or 10 pounds less. I can't keep trying 365, too much of a mental block. I'll drop down to 370 either this week or next, and will probably smoke it.

Regular grip bench press:

315 x 1

easy.

Close grip speed bench:

225 x 12, 225 x 10

These were so light I was bouncing off the bench. I probably need to make these a bit heavier... on the first set, I could have probably gone for 15 before I slowed down, and 20+ before I failed. And that's after a failed max.

Bi-angular row:

10 plates + 20 x 7, 8 plates x 8, 8 plates x 10

Did these with a full ROM, down to almost a complete stretch. Felt good, lats were tight and exhausted.

Concentration curls from 55's to 50's to 45's, then crossbody hammers with the 85's. Biceps done.

And I had TWO people ask me for advice today! It was kinda fun, especially because the thoroughness of my answer surprised this one guy. Indian guy, med student, I don't think he expected more than a "uhhh, do shrugs for your traps" response. But instead we had a good 10 minute chat, shook hands, and went on our merry way. It's nice to exceed people's expectations, even on the little things.

Diet's been good, sleep's been good, I have no complaints.

Must get some rest this week. :)

Well, my thinking was that you're heavier than you've been and that the ol' ankles could use the extra support when you want to really push off and make cuts.

shredder, not yet. But 375 was just as close... I'm almost ready to start pushing out those wide grips again, which hopefully will blow away my old numbers.

BoB- They'sa fast, 'tis true. I just hope that I'm not doing them sloppy. Don't need bad habits. tuttut

Thanks for the props, as always. :)

ec, it's not annoying if I'm not there, which 95% of the time I've not. It's amazing how many IMs I've gotten over the last few days while I've been gone (I've been pretty much out all day in classes, doing work with people, etc.) And everybody thinks I'm just ignoring them. I get a bad rep.

Cal, very true. But again, it hurts my ankle flexibility, and therefore speed off the ground. Openside flanker, btw. Though they're still trying to figure out what to do with me, and I'm getting moved around. I'm the fastest forward on the team by far, there's actually only one player on the team as a whole who can beat me in top speed, and I got them all on acceleration. (and really, I don't need to be able to cut THAT quickly) Problem is still learning the nuances of the game for me... field awareness. Also probably the physically strongest by a good margin, but I lack endurance. :(

Will, die.

:)

Did a slightly modified workout today, since I'll be doing deads/legs on saturday. I feel like all I'm doing lately is benching. But this is good, this lift needs plenty of work.

Close grip bench press:

135 x 10, 225 x 12, 275 x 3, 315 x 1, 335 x 1, 355 x ****

Actually pretty much a miss on 355, but it was elbow pain, not strength. I kept hesitating, it finally needed to be grabbed. Need more recovery.

Took it down for speed.

225 x 12

VERY fast. The last 6 slowed down, but the first 6 were poppin.

Lateral raises:

60's x 8, 55's x 10, 50's x 10

Bent-over lateral raises:

50's x 8, 50's x 8

One handed pushdowns:

200 x 10/10, 170 x 8/8, 170 x 8/8

These got stares. Actually, most things get stares. I think it's because I'm so odd.

Did a few curls, then went to rugby. Played 7's for a while (yes, more touch), then did some conditioning. Yes, sprints. It was fun. I regurgitated my post workout shake by mouthfuls during these. But I think I kept most of it down anyway.

Doesn't that sound appetizing?

And that was about it. Not enough hitting today for my taste. But we got two weeks to get into amazing shape, because we play UNC then. We've apparently never lost to them, and they're a damn good team. I'm sure as f*ck playing in that game, and I plan on kicking ass. So I need to get myself prepped.

Diet- too few calories, but good.

Sleep- 7.5 hours.

Scott S

Are those lateral raises with full, level with shoulder ROM? (I'm assuming yes.) That's pretty impressive.

I'm still using the pink dumbbells for those. :(

Alex.V
11-01-2003, 06:36 PM
Fuzz- Yes. Very much so. Especially when the stuff you've taken down is so fresh that it still tastes exactly the same coming up.

Scott- Yep. Hey, they're all I do for shoulders, and I used to have mad military press skills before I f*cked em up. Don't worry about poundages on these, arm length makes a bigger difference than usual on these.

Ass kicking leg workout, making up for lost time.

Deadlifts:

135 x 5, 225 x 4, 315 x 3, 405 x 2, 495 x 1, 585 x 1

Depleted as hell, 585 was slow enough that I didn't move beyond. Plus, I had more to do!

Squats:

135 x 6, 225 x 4, 315 x 3, 405 x 1, 455 x 1, 495 x 1, 225 x 20

These were incredible amusing. I have never felt so completely battered and beaten to **** after a workout. Not muscle fatigue, strip sets get me worse. But just a complete feeling of having pushed myself to the breaking point... I didn't even realize it at the time, but now that I'm sitting here looking back at how I was feeling... for so few work sets, I was destroyed.

Calf raises:

Stack x 20, stack x 22

Hanging leg raises:

Bw x 6 (up, halfway down, up, down style), bw x 8 (normal style)

That was it.

Now I am off to eat.

Diet- too few calories in too few meals.

Sleep- 7 hours.

Yark.

Edit- PS- deadlifting 6 plates and squatting 5 plates in the same session is COOL.

I hear ya... I have gone out for rugby once or twice just to get a feel for the game because I hang with a lot of kiwis and aussies and my instincts for the game were just all wrong... the difference in contact vs. football was also a huge factor. it's one thing to absorb and recover from periodic big hits, but there is more constant 'soft contact' in rugby and it wears you down a lot, sorta like boxing, I found (boxing is one of the most tiring sports I ever participated in)

the endurance is a huge factor; you see that in some of the world cup games that are on now -- rugby being an 80 minute game, you see a lot of teams with inferior conditioning being able to play well for the first half but then they start to die in the last 25-30 minutes of the game, at which point the team with the superior conditioning can completely dominate and run up the score, often getting big breaks for tries because everyone on the weaker team is too tired.

Cal- Yes, I realize, hence my sole concern at the moment being conditioning. I'm of no use if I'm only good for about 20-30 minutes. It does wear ya down, even just tumbling and getting back up gets hugely tiring if the second you're on your feet you need to be taking off again. Wish there was an easy way to get in shape for this..

Heath- wow. Posting in my journal after probably over a year. daaaamn.

IceR- Yes, it was. Long weekend besides that, too. I was a little depleted going into that workout. Not totally my doing, though.

Will- You'll have to. Maybe if you'd get over your penchant for prancing, you'd be blowing us all out of the water.

:D

Yes, I did work out tuesday, I forgot! Felt like crap, though. NOT eating enough, not sleeping enough.

CGBP:

135 x 10, 225 x 10, 275 x 2, 315 x 1, 335 x 1, 355 x 1, 275 x 6 (slow eccentric, explosive concentric)

Shoulder was hurting me like hell for some reason, so even 315 felt painful and difficult. Stopped these early.

Bi-angular row:

10 plates x 8, 8 plates x 10, 8 plates x 12

So much fun!

Concentration curls:

60's x 8, 55's x 10, 45's x 10

My bi's were so damn pumped, yo.

Did some hanging leg raises and some front raises with the 50's to finish off, went home and got a bunch of food before practice.

Which consisted of lots of running, a bit more running, some sprinting, and then FINALLY a little bit of hitting. And after a collision with one of the backs, I sent him down and we had to halt play while we checked him out. Me being the closest one to having any sort of EMT training, I actually had the somewhat uncomfortable task of trying to assess if the guy had a concussion or not due to my shoulder smacking his head. Whoops.

Silly little guys. They should wear some soft hats or something.

And my knees and ankles were in serious pain afterwards. Shin splints finally have come back with a venegance, and my increased weight this time around is wrecking my joints. Not sure what to do besides suck it up.

Diet- too low in calories.

Sleep- 7 hours.

Fuzz, yep, around the same. I look a little leaner, maybe, but I haven't bothered re-checking. I will someday. When I actually care. :)

Heath- mind like a steel trap, really. Aren't I impressive?

I did work out this weekend, both days. Short workouts, though, since I'm pretty sick at the moment. I will post them both here. Wuhoo.

Close grip bench press:

135 x 12, 225 x 10, 275 x 2, 315 x 1, 335 x 1, 355 x 1

Buckets of fun, really.

Regular grip bench press:

225 x 2, 275 x 2, 315 x 1, 335 x 1

Little ache here, slightly tired. So I stopped.

DB flyes:

75's x 10, 75's x 10

Felt good, nice stretch actually.

One-handed pushdowns:

200 x 10/10, 200 x 10/10

Always a nice way to finish off the tris. :D

Did some front raises with the 55's, and left.

Then on sunday:

Squats:

135 x 5, 225 x 4, 315 x 3, 405 x 1, 455 x 1, 515 x miss, 315 x 7

Lost balance and fell forward on the 515, strained, popped something in my forearm. There was swelling in the muscle, I'm not sure exactly what I did, but then after doing the lunges, I couldn't move my left hand for a little while. Weird.

It was not cool.

Dumbbell lunges:

160 x 2/2, 180 x 2/2, 220 x 8/8, 220 x 8/8

That's total weight. 80's, 90's, 110's. Not sure on the exact numbers here. These were tough, but mostly since I haven't done them in about two years. I might keep these in... they're a good exercise, and don't bother my back at all.

Calf raises:

Stack x 30, stack x 25

That was it, I was done.

Diet's been decent... very low in calories yesterday, though. Sleep's been on and off, being sick doesn't help much. Blah.

And that's that.

Aww, for a little while there my journal was right on top of Molly's...

:hump::hump:

Scott- What is this cutting of which you speak? :D

Wikked- thanks bro. It's rough, joint pain.. because the muscles want to do more, they're capable of doing more, but... they just CAN'T. And there's not much that can be done.

Heath- I been good, mang. I gotta catch you on IM or some sh*t. Sick for two weeks is about par for me... when something hits me, it lays me flat for a while. Does suck.

Will- yeah man, excellent links. Chris sent me a vid, I'm trying to upload it but have space issues... it'll get up, I'll post it. sick sh*t, no? :)

Did a little chest and back today. Yes, still sick, but not bad regardless.

Close grip bench press:

135 x 12, 225 x 10, 275 x 3, 315 x 1, 335 x 1, 355 x 1, 375 x credible effort.

355 was fine, no problem.. 375 hit a wall. Blah. Oh well, a little better than the last few days. No shoulder pain, just bad sniffles and a little lack of focus (lousy sleep).

Regular bench press:

225 x 12

Easy. Didn't feel like moving up, though.

Bi-angular row:

10 plates + 20 x 6, 8 plates x 12, 10 plates x 9

Good sets... the first was a little weak, but the second and third had power to spare.

Concentration curls:

65 x 8/8, 55 x 8/8, 50 x 8/8

Whee. Concentration curls with the 65's!

....

stab me in the face, please.

Decent form, though. Was surprised how much stronger my arms feel these days.

Close grip pulldowns:

Stack x 14

Had some extra energy to burn.

That was it... skipping rugby, need to get better!

Diet- Decent. I'm off to get some cals in a few minutes, actually.

Sleep- 6.5-7 hours, but way too broken to really be quality.

And that's it.

I really need to try one of these "slow bulks" next time. How fast would you estimate you gained weight over the last two years?

Alex.V

Well, I been staying pretty steady the last 8 months or so. So, 60 pounds in 20 months... 3 pounds a month. That's been the rate, worked pretty well for me.

I did some deadlifts today... found out why I was sick. Strep. Getting better, though. I'm about 90% sure I'm culturing a pathogenic strain of streptococcus in microbiology, so that might explain it.

Still managed a decent workout... not my greatest, but short, sweet, and I'm feeling better afterwards.

Deadlifts:

135 x 4, 225 x 3, 315 x 3, 405 x 3, 495 x 1, 585 x 1

585 was rather slow... decided that 675 wasn't going to budge, so I said screw it, went to conventionals.

Conventional deadlifts:

495 x 1, 545 x 1

Both very easy. My max here might possibly be six plates.
My lower back was screaming.

Lateral raises:

65's x 8, 55's x 8, 50's x 8

65 is a PR, yes. They were done with great form, too.. shoulders looked pretty cut/lean. Not just that, but almost big, too. ;)

Bent-over lateral raises:

55's x 10

Left. I was supposed to hit lab real quick then go to rugby. Lab lasted far too long. Just as well I didn't practice much, I'm feeling like ass still.

And that's it. Diet's been pretty good, sleep's been lacking, I plan on remedying that tonight with LOTS of sleep. I'm not going out. Mostly because I plan on getting ****faced (thanks to Beirut) tomorrow.

60 pounds in 20 months now that is serious progress for the long term. Those lateral raises are SIC!

Alex.V
11-15-2003, 04:09 PM
Thanks man. :) Lateral raises should be, they're the only shoulder work I do. Dammit.

Did a bit of a bench day today. Didn't have much energy, still can't sleep more than 6 hours, but hopefully will be over this damn strep in the next few days.

Close grip bench press:

135 x 12, 225 x 10, 275 x 3, 315 x 1, 335 x 1, 355 x 1, 275 x 5, 225 x 20

These were okay... my balance has been lousy lately, that can't be helping my strength much. Shoulder and right elbow bugging me a little. Nothing major, but it wasn't making me happy. The last 225 was odd... tanked around 18/19, last two were pure momentum. Shouldn't be that hard.

Ah well.

DB flyes:

75's x 8, 75's x 8

Good stretch, no pain.

One-handed pushdowns:

200 x 10/10, 180 x 8/8, 160 x 8/8

I thought there was going to be elbow discomfort, but there wasn't. I tried to make these as explosive as possible, and definitely succeeded. Felt good, though. Strong grip on them, they were fast but controlled.

DB front raises:

50's x 10/10, 50's x 10/10

My shoulders are small. Whatever.

Diet's been decent... I need to stop eating out, I really do.

Sleep... not good. Again, can't get back to sleep after 6 hours or so. At that point, I'm no longer tired enough to ignore the congestion. Blah.

Yes.

Anyway, ever have one of those workouts when nothing SHOULD go right, but it all does? I mean, the last week I've been distracted, a little depressed, very stressed, haven't eaten much, etc. etc. etc.... yet today was excellent. I think finally being done with that physics test was a big thing... there's been grade concern, and even though I haven't gotten the results yet, I knew I could handle every problem, which if nothing else means I'm progressing well and should ace the final.

When I walked into the gym, I almost felt like turning around and leaving, I was so out of it. My legs actually felt wobbly.

I'm glad I stayed.

Close grip bench press:

135 x 12, 225 x 12, 275 x 2, 315 x 1, 335 x 1, 355 x 1, 375 x 1 (!), 315 x 6, 225 x 19

I have no idea where this strength came from. 315 for 6 is a PR because it was so damn fast... hell, even 355 popped up faster than 315 usually does. And 375 is a 15 pound PR. Granted, I hit 360 on close grips, what, two months ago? But still... I unracked, the weight felt fine, I didn't hesitate on the way down and exploded up.

And, probably a contributing factor was zero shoulder/elbow pain whatsoever. :)

Bi-angular row:

10 plates + Sarah x 1, 10 plates x 10, 8 plates x 14.5

Yeah, I don't know. *shrug* The girl on top wasn't my idea.

Around here, the strength burst seemed to leave me. So my curls sucked. Concentration curls, 55's for about 6. 2 sets. And hammer curls, 90's for one set. 7 per hand, I think. My arms are trembling as I write this. I'm very pleased with myself, I think the encouragement I got from this workout should last a while.

Diet- good. Actually, today it may have helped that I ate a big bowl of pasta, and a a steak covered with salty (and potassium-y fake salt) seasoning. Electrolytes + carbs = good for workouts.

Of course, my face looks like a balloon, as always happens when I gorge on that kind of food, but whatever.

Sleep- 7 hours even.

Belial, I always lurk in your jounal. Your lifts are very very impressive. I started to read through from the start, but nodded out somewhere around page 6. I comptemplated traveling down to Duke later in the fall for the St. John's baskeball game, but we have no shot and its a pain to get tickets so I think I'll pass. I was at the game a few years back where SJU broke the non-conference winning steak at Cameron, quite a great bball atmoshphere. Keep up the awesome work.

CP

Alex.V
11-19-2003, 12:08 PM
Will- yeah, don't ask that. I'd be more than happy to answer with all the details. :D I do think that if I got back into practice with my regular wider grip (and were healthy enough to do so), I'd smoke 405. When my triceps were only strong enough to close grip 335, I almost had 405. Now, I blasted 375 on close grips, that's got to be good for at least another 10 pounds on the wider grip, even conservatively speaking.

So I'm going to take fuzz's advice and actually work on getting healthy again... I actually feel all inspired now.

Hercule, Heath, thanks much. Words of encouragement (and letting me know people are reading) does me a world of good. :)

Scott- It's only because of my shoulder problems.. close grip keeps me benching, doesn't aggravate my shoulders, and is hopefully making me a little stronger on the wide grips while my shoulder takes care of itself. I still have to see if that will pan out... the next few months should tell.

CP- Thanks for posting in here, then. You're St. John's, huh? Bastards, thanks for breaking that streak. real nice of you guys. ;) Shame, the Cameron Crazies have mellowed a lot. The cult following the team used to have seems to have died a bit. I hope it's just an ebb, because that's always been a school trademark and I'd hate to see it actually die in my time here.

Okay, I got mad catchup to do on this here journal. Funny what a few days of no (productive) posting will result in. I got three workouts to post, but that'd be boring. There are some highlights, but nothing exceptional. First things first:

Heath- I'd love to.. I'm out this week until sunday, but sometime next week? Find out when those kids are lifting, I'd love to come along!

To everyone who complimented the lift.. thank you. It was a hell of a week for workouts, I think coming off the sickness helped a hell of alot. Nothing like forced downtime (crappy workouts = less weight lifted = no overtraining? Sure. sounds good to me) to give a good turnaround.

I do need to do board presses. Give me some time to be all arts and craftsy.

Jane, I'm not sure. I'd like to make it up, but you know how my schedule is... ;)

MMN- what the hell you talkin about, boy?

So, thursday I did deadlifts. Highlight was, 675 came about 3 inches off the ground. That's WITH bar bend. I should have had it. I could have had it. It was stronger than ever. Dammit, it felt close! :( Soon enough, though! I can taste it. Also did some conventionals, up to 565, which is a PR there, I believe. Even that wasn't hard, probably could have had a solid 585 conventional if I'd felt up for it.

Saturday, I benched again. Was kinda crappy, didn't push it, ended up falling out of the power groove on 355. Probably just as well, I was still feeling beat up from earlier in the week.

And sunday, I squatted, hitting 505 pretty easily, then doing about 9 reps at 405 on SLDLs. On the 9th, I dropped it, reset, and did a conventional deadlift up onto the pins. it was cool.

Physics is stressing me out entirely too much. I'm very much looking forward to Thanksgiving, hopefully I WILL get some work done, and be halfway sane when I get back here. Sound like a plan? I think so.

After two free lunches today, I'm feeling well-fed. And I got about 25 hours of sleep this weekend, all told. Not bad at all. :D

I'll return to halfway informative journal updates soon.

MMN- Never been down in that direction, nope.

Wikked- Thanks. Well, yesterday was far better in the bench department, but far worse in the sleep one.

Renectx- I know.

So... monday night. Stayed awake all night. As in, zero sleep. Hadn't eaten since 7:30PM monday evening. Tuesday around noon, I got a burger and a beer, amidst much cracked-out conversation (Jonathan can attest to this). Sorta kinda (but not really) passed out from about 4 to 4:30. When I stood up, I could hardly move. BUT, my friend Sarah had said she definitely wanted to work out before Thanksgiving started, I needed to show her a few things (deadlifts, plate-loaded leg press, seated calf raises on a bench, etc.).

So I went.

Glad I did.

Felt like I had no energy at first. 135 was slow. 225 was still slow, but I felt more into it.

Now, if ANYBODY out there can explain the following workout, I'd love to hear it. Remember, no sleep, maybe 1000 calories in the previous 20 hours or so...

Close grip bench press:

135 x 10, 225 x 10, 275 x 3, 315 x 1

At this point, I debated stopping.

335 x 1

Groove was slightly off, but felt decent. Felt pretty wired when I actually grabbed the bar. Decided I'd match my pre-last-tuesday PR... I'd been stuck on 360 for ages, figured now that I'd blown it out of the water last week, I may as well match it while tired to prove it was my bitch.

360 x 1

Flew up, faster than 335. I thought the spotter had touched it/pulled it. Did nothing of the sort. Figured I'd do 365. My spotter said I had at least another 15. I mean, there's no sense in just matching last week's PR if I'm going all out, is there?

380 x 1 (!)

Went up as fast as 360. I was in shock, 5 pounds more than what I struggled with last week, and it felt easy. I didn't even notice the load when I unracked. Looked at my spotter, said "390?" He said "Why bother? That's close to 400, which is close to 4 plates". Me, being completely spaced out and thinking why the hell not, loaded 4 plates on.

405 x 1 (!)

Um, I'll take it. :D It slowed a bit, my spotter touched his fingers to it, I yelled at him not to lift, then I pressed it out. 30 pound PR over last week. 9 days ago, my max on close grips was 360. It's 45 higher than that now. That's like six months of progress condensed into 2 weeks.

No idea what to make of it. None whatsoever. The only variable that changed yesterday (compared to when I was struggling with 365 over the last two months) was my lack of sleep.

But, yeah. I can close grip bench 405. Got props from two random guys I'd never met before. felt really good.

315 x 4

Just to loosen up.

Bi-angular row:

10 plates x 9, 8 plates x 10, 8 plates x 7

Was exhausted at this point, didn't feel like pushing it overly much.

Concentration curls:

55's x 10/10, 60's x 8/8

Hammer curls:

90's x 10/10

That was more than enough for me. I was exhausted. This week, I'm probably doing a deadlift/chest workout on friday, then taking off until next tuesday.

Oh, and, Happy Thanksgiving, everyone.

11-26-2003, 09:32 AM
alex: I think what is was is that you broke through your mental block. Most other days, you were probably trying _too_ hard and the fact that you just couldn't progress became a self-fullfilling prophecy. So tuesday, you are nearly in an altered state, you don't expect to hit anything at all, and just blow the weight up. I'm sure you had the strength the whole time, it was just a matter of you mind/CNS/whatever harnessing it.

I've had similiar workouts where I surprise myself because I'm really not trying to get myself worked up and all hyped for a PR due to sleep/stress/whatever, and I hit it easily because of that. Of course, other times it goes the other way.

Things are funny like that...

Now, if ANYBODY out there can explain the following workout, I'd love to hear it. Remember, no sleep, maybe 1000 calories in the previous 20 hours or so...

Dizzamn. Thank you all for your comments/props/advice, I'm not sure I have enough mental function left to reply to everybody, but all your posts are appreciated. :)

It was huge for me, felt great. Somehow amidst all this stress it's nice to at least be progressing tangibly in something, gives me at least a focal point for SOME inspiration.

I been bad about the gym, hit up a half-assed workout last saturday at home. Did some deadlifting, a little light benching, nothing too crazy. But came back with a venegance. I mean, as much of a venegance as I could with not enough food, not enough sleep, and this background headache/nausea that's been plaguing me since I woke up.

But, hey, uh, venegance is venegance. right?

Anyway. Did some deadlifts. They weren't bad at all.

Sumo deads:

135 x 4, 225 x 2, 315 x 2, 405 x 2, 495 x 2, 585 x 2, 675 x 0.75

Yep, about 10-11 inches off the floor. Not far from lockout at all. It practically flew up, so much so that I think I surprised myself and hesitated, expecting it to be slower. Pissed at myself, but... I can taste it. The weight moves, and it moves well! Next week, or if the exam stress sapped my strength, the week after it's mine!

Conventional deads:

585 x 1

Nothing at all. Felt like I could have broken 600 rather easily here. MUCH stronger than before.

Lateral raises with the 55's, bent-over laterals with the 50's, then some hanging leg raises. Those deads took a LOT out of me, but feeling 7 plates come up that far was a real mood-elevator.

:D

So, all's I gotta do is hardcore study until thursday morning, then my stress level plummets to nothing until late january.

I really do apologize for being ****ty about replying to IMs and the like. I haven't been around much, or when I am, I'm usually busy doing something I really don't want to do. :( I'll make it up to y'all when things settle down, I promise.

Heeeeey kids. Sorry I been so scarce. Long story short, DSL/phone service was connected 'cuz roommate didn't pay the bill, lost internet connection, it won't be back on until probably first or second week of january, leaving me with nothing but dial up in the meantime. I also lost $200 that week because I couldn't do my Businessweek, and had an extra $140 taken out of my account from a check that was sat on rather than cashed, so I'm pretty much ****ed, and in a bad mood.

Workouts have been spotty, they probably will remain so for some time... nothing exceptional in the last few, though today's leg workout was decent... squatted up to 500, balance is getting a little better... and did some leg presses, just a few sets at 20 plates (8 reps each) to get back into them... leg strength may actually have decreased, even though most of my lifts are still strong. Not sure why. Something worth noting, though... maybe I should really be a little more consistent. ;)

Also did 3 minutes of jump rope, was going to do more but shin splints/ankles started burning like hell, I'm still having trouble walking. Should have done it on a padded surface. Or with newer shoes. Blah.

Looking very much forward to a few weeks with nothing to do, though. VERY much forward to it.

And that is all for now. Next time I have a real workout I'll update as normal. :)

Aww, I missed you to. :*

Workout today! Experimental, really... cramming some ****e in, trying to just get a solid upper body workout done before I'm off for another few days. Damn spotty vacation workouts....

But, anyway. Shoulder felt good, so I pushed it a little.

Close grip bench:

135 x 12, 225 x 12, 275 x 4, 315 x 1, 335 x 1

These absolutely flew up, felt very good, but didn't want to burn out.

Regular bench:

225 x 4 x 4

Very fast, 30 seconds between sets. Shoulder felt fine, stretch actually felt good.

Seated DB press:

70's x 6, 90's x 6, 110's x 9

Hardest part was getting those f*ckers up, but once up, I was surprised how stable/strong these felt, having not done them for ages. Might rotate these back in, but probably limit myself to the 100's for safety's sake. Not a PR on the last set, but the heaviest I've gone in a LONG time.

Bi-angular row:

10 plates x 9, 8 plates x 12, 8 plates x 11

Good, strong, fast, lats were exhausted afterwards... so I guess they served their purpose.

Concentration curls with the 55's, hammers with the 90's, cable curls with the stack, then outta there. Only did one set of each kind of curl, so stop giving me sh*t, dammit!

Diet- not bad. I mean, completely crappy, but I feel strong, look leaner than I have in a few weeks, and have energy. Good thing.

Sleep- 8 hours last night. Finally don't feel chronically exhausted.

And I'm off to my EMT-I class!

Recovered from the exam craziness yet? Nothing like leaving it all behind you and being able to be completely slothful at home :) Yay for long breaks...

BoB, Heath... I'm sorry, guys, I told y'all, I been off my game. Soon, I will graduate to the toning bands and body bars. Until then, don't mock. :( I'm very sensitive this time of the month...

Molly, hell yes. Been home for exactly one day, and have done NOTHING. And you? You ARE welcome to pick up the phone... even though after that absolutely insane christmas carol message, I do think it's my turn.

That got saved, by the way. I need to figure out how to transfer it onto the computer and upload it. :D

I actually worked out today! Dad's little gym in the apartment complex, hence no deadlifting. but I used that little plate loading squat/lunge thing... it's basically a rack that lets you pile plates on it, then you lift it straight up. none of the technique of a deadlift, and it's easier to move the weight, but it's certainly good for building strength in parts of the lift, especially because it mimics my sticking point well.

Squat-lunge: (rack is 45, believe it or not)

225 x 6, 405 x 3, 495 x 2, 585 x 2, 675 x 1, 755 x 1

Brutal enough. Last bit went up SLOW, and I really had to lean a bit to get through the sticking point. But, felt good, I think I need more of this kind of work... matt, yes, kinda like heavy shrugs. :)

Db presses:

80's x 8, 100's x 6

Just to keep things flexible, triceps still not totally recovered, so I didn't push these at all, and stopped when I started to get a little fatigued.

Lateral raises:

55's x 10, 55's x 10, 50's x 8

Bent-over lateral raises:

50's x 8, 50's x 8

Whee. Fun beyond comprehension.

Did some hanging leg raises, and left.

Diet- not bad. Low in calories, high in junk food, but... ok, no, worse than "not bad". Pretty terrible. but right now I don't give a ****. :)

Sleep- 8+ hours last two nights. :)

And I'm still alive! last minute christmas shopping is killing me... the empty bank account doesn't help. :( But, haven't really had more than a few minutes to sit down and chill... to anybody who IMs me, this is the family computer, and I may be signed on, but if I don't reply, chances are it's my sister who's sitting here (or nobody), so.. no profanity, please.

Actually, **** that, see if you can scandalize the girl. It'd be hilarious. :) But yeah, gal and rene especially, sorry guys, I've missed a bunch of your IMs, I do truly suck.

But I worked out! Doing maintenance ****e, this is the gym here that has bars with no knurling and zero friction between the sleeve and shaft... so benching is an interesting experience... even at 225, I fear for my life. Not to mention that the racks are crap.

Still... I can maintain.

BB bench:

135 x 10, 225 x 10, 275 x 4, 315 x 2, 335 x 2

Didn't dare go heavier.

Hammer strength bench:

8 plates x 6, 6 plates x 10

Yeah, whatever.

Hammer strength row:

10 plates x 8, 10 plates x 7, 8 plates x 10

Nothing exciting here. Except in this gym, even though there are some big (yet shapeless guys), people are easily impressed.

I'm so cool I scare myself.

Lateral raises for the shoulders, some concentration curls, then pounded out three sets of squats at 365 (6 quick reps each, no belt). (warmed up with 135 x 8, 225 x 4, 315 x 2 just prior)

And that was it. Might work out on wednesday, might not. And shopping is almost done... debating getting a satellite radio for my dad... there's interest, but just need to decide which one.

Anyway, that's it. Off to food!

Diet- HA!

Sleep- 8+ hours

I wish I maintained my bench at 335, bitch!
