View Full Version : Am I taking too much Protein?

Hello, I'm 16 years old. I eat roughly 8 eggs a day, a can of tuna, and get another 20 or so grams of protein a day from meat. I also take two protein shakes a day with 46 grams of protein a day. I figured my protein intake by multiplying my body weight times 1.5( I weigh 140 pounds). So I take in roughly 200-210 grams of protein a day. Am I taking too much protein? Even if I go over 210 grams of protein a day, like around 250, what would happend? Would it be really bad for me?

you eat 8 regular eggs a day? thats bad, eggs are horrible for you unless you take out the yellows. buy the eggbeaters...otherwise you'll have a heart attack at a young age...other than that I think your ok...I mean your protein is high...so you should drinnk lots of water...

Egg yolks are not horrible, they have EFA's. The cholesterol in yolks are helpful, but they can also become a problem, I think it's a debated issue. Anyways, I would probably cut out a few yolks. eat about 3 or 4 at most.

The question should be 'am I getting fat or am I poutting on muscle eating so much?' If the answer is 'I am getting fat' you need to look at your total calorific intake as well as the type and amount of protein. If its 'I'm gaining muscle' then one: congrats and two: you may still need to look at changing bad fats for good ones. As one of the posters says the arguement on the fat in eggs is undecided. I'd go with the taking the yolks out and adding 2-3 more whites to balance it out.

210 grams of protein isn't too much. I get maybe 50 more grams of it in my diet.
As for egg yolks being bad, where did you hear that? Half the protein is in the yolk and lots of EFA as well. I do agree that eating 8 whole eggs a day is a bit excessive, but the yolk is not evil if eaten in moderation. I eat at least 2-3 whole eggs for breakfast every day and I'm perfectly healthy.

The jury is still out on the egg debate. They are expected to come back with a ruling in about NEVER. LOL. Eggs are deemed "bad" because they have high levels of cholesterol in them. Some people think that there is a direct relationship between the amount of cholesterol in your diet and the amount in your blood. To date there is no conclusive evidence to say one way or another. I am in the camp of believing that there is no direct and a weak indirect relationship. Don't listen to all the egg bashing its unwarranted.

Ah....The old eggs will raise you cholesterol and kill you myth. Fortunately, GonePostal, Shao-lin and Manveet came in to set the record straight against the evil standart nutritional establishment.
Eggs are one of the greatest foods there is. One of the problems is the less than optimal ratio of omega 3 to omega 6 in the eggs from comercially grown chickens. Home grown chicken eggs would be a lot better, but there are omega 3 supplemented eggs available nowadays.
Cholesterol is the building block your body uses to build hormones and I can tell you that I do notice a measurable increase in muscle gains when I increase my egg intake.
Now, there is one reason not to overdo it on eggs, which is their high potential for allergies. If taking any food on a daily basis is generally not a good ideia, with eggs this rule also aplies. Personally I limit my egg intake to six to eight whole eggs every other day. Variation really is the key to an healthy diet. And it's also a pain in the ass for a bodybuilder.

Eggs are the best, I eat 3 whole eggs a day and I am the ******* man. Look at me, I look 21, I'm really 115. Feel those abs. Real muscle baby.
And no, you are not eating too much protein.

u can really mess up ur kidneys badly if u take high protein everyday for a long time...u can somewhat help avoid this if u drink large amounts of water everyday though....just somthin to think bout.....

Do you have anything to support this? I believe that a high protien diet can be hard on your kidneys if you already have kidney problems, but on a healthy individual I don't see a problem.

high protein diets r fine....i was just stating that u prolly should drink large amounts of water with the protein to help ur kidney out......read it in the august addition of FLEX megazine

I would classify high protein diet....according to several articles in FLEX and Muscle and Fitness Megazines....as consuming 3+g of protein per lb.

What happens to excessive, unused protein?
The body does not store excess protein as protein; just like any calories beyond the body's daily requirements, extra gets used as energy or stored as fat or muscle glycogen. Eating eggs or chicken is not what causes increased muscle development. What stimulates growth is the high intensity exercising that challenges the body and then requires repair. Protein simply provides our bodies with the essential amino acids, or building blocks needed to build lean muscle.
Your body needs a certain amount of protein to build muscle and repair tissue damage. Consuming protein beyond what the body can actually use results in excessive waste by-products such as ammonia or urea. According to Dr. Michael Colgan, our body protects itself by converting toxic ammonia into urea, which is then excreted by the kidneys. People with inflamed kidneys can suffer from low back pain or even worse. If your leotard or sweatshirt smells like ammonia after a workout, it’s a pretty good indication that you need to reduce the amount of protein in your diet.

1. the high protein diet debate has been done to death.
2. show me someone who started with perfectly healthy kidneys, did a higher protein diet and now has ****ed kidneys. Due to the protein.
3. Find me someone with half a clue who actually eats 3g protein per lb.
4. never mention muscle rags for any purpose whatsoever. Not even if you're referring to the fact that your toilet roll ran out so you had to improvise.
