Hey Icer, I can totally relate. Just yesterday was leg day for me, and I started with squats, DB lunges, and leg press. This guy came over and was like
"are you trying to get a real big butt?"
"well it's leg day and..."
"I see you doing all these butt exercises though"

doc, I just gave him a very blank "who are you?" stare and walked away. I've decided that either laughing at buttheads or giving them the "I don't care to even acknowledge your existence" blank look is much less stressful on me and and others who happen to be in the vicinity when someone pisses me off...

And I can tell the end of the semester is at hand because I am waking up at 4:00 a.m., my "anxiety hour," with my mind racing and unable to get back to sleep. I really hate that...makes for a very long day.

Yes! And I am very much looking forward to that break.

I have to serve on a search committee for a new faculty member, I'm advising incoming students (help them sign up for their 1st semester courses), I'm teaching a 3-week short course, and working with a psychology colleague on developing a joint "statistics and psychology" course, but it's going to leave room for lots of goofing off :)

Catching up for the week here...

Tuesday: 30 min. run before evening class (so that I could stay awake/alert in evening class)

Wednesday a.m.: light weight workout (back/biceps)

Wednesday p.m.: hockey; one of my buddies called me to sub at the last minute. I arrived halfway through the 1st period, but I made it.

You sit on a stationary bike in a little room with other people on stationary bikes in like a little circle and they blast some kinda gay music and you go all out for like 15-20 minutes or something like that.

It's a very intense interval workout, about 45 minutes worth. It gives my body a break from running/hockey but still gets my heart rate up to "about to have a heart attack" levels, makes my legs burn with fatigue, and leaves me happy that it's over but also happy that I worked that hard...

And the class I go to does NOT play gay music....

Saturday a.m.: hockey

We had the ice from 7:30-10:00 this morning :eek: That was way too long with only 10 people and 2 goalies...the last hour was mostly people standing around at center ice and making halfhearted attempts to do something...LOL!

Unfortunately, now I have to head to school and finish writing exams, grading, and other BS that I really don't want to do :(

Then by all means, go ahead and do just that...

I like variety :) It also keeps all the right muscles in shape so that I can bike to school in the summer, a 50 mile round trip.

I ended up playing hockey again last night. Today I'm going to go to the gym in the afternoon as a break from yet another day of working on school stuff. This is the last weekend though, and then I'm free for the summer!

So a random guy walks up to you ladies in the gym and comments on how you either (a) are not attractive to him, or (b) will not be attractive to him because you (a) have muscular legs or (b) will have muscular legs... and at the same time demonstrates his lack of understanding of personal goals/physiology?

Tuesday: 30 min. run early in the a.m.

Yesterday was a long *#&5@ing day. But during the night I dreamed about a problem I was thinking about before I went to bed and woke up with some new insight. And since I think better when I'm in motion, I decided to go out and run even though it was raining. Result: I'm awake and energized this morning and I think I have my problem solved :)

Three more days...then back to my previously scheduled life...

Friday: the last day of the academic year and the end of my bizarro existence over the last 2-3 weeks :cool:

Since I was out to watch the hockey game (okay, I was out already and decided to just stay out later), I didn't get home until late and overslept slightly this morning...but it doesn't matter because I don't have to be be anywhere at any time today! Whoo hoo!

Today I will break up the monotony of grading exams by taking myself on a little jaunt to the weight room at school for a little midday pick-me-up. The students will all be gone and it will probably be all mine.

Monday is the first day of my summer vacation and the first day of my return to post-hockey, post-school training. :)

Saturday: a.m. hockey

Wow. I guess sleeping for 14 hours straight DOES make a difference ;) We had the ice for 2 hours this morning and I had more energy than I've had in the past two weeks or so. It was an excellent skate, a bunch of my favorite people showed up, and I played well...so Icer is in a very good mood this morning :D

The rest of the day...still have work on some exams, and then there's something going on later for a friend's birthday that I was told about at some point but it got lost in the blur of last week...so I will have to track down someone who knows something...

Other than that, more sleep is on my horizon...this sleep thing is wonderful...glad I rediscovered it!

Naps yesterday, more naps today...sleeping in the middle of the day is just so decadent...I love it!

Got more papers graded today while watching a short snow flurry...grrrr. WTF? It's the middle of May! Hate this upstate NY weather. Oh well, at least it makes me want to stay inside and get stuff done.

Also went to the sporting good store and added to my collection of dumbbells for the home gym...whoo hoo! Got some strange looks from ppl as I was hauling them from the far corner of the cavernous store (it figures...the weights are as far as possible from the checkouts).

And I don't have to be up for anything tomorrow a.m...so it really isn't even a Monday tomorrow :)

Wednesday: early a.m. cardio, 30 min. on treadmill

Though I haven't been logging my usual updates, I have been working out at a somewhat reduced level. This week is my first week after the semester and I've just been sort of "normalizing"....catching up on sleep, eating better, doing a mix of cardio and light lifting.

Over the summer I'm going to be working with a strength and conditioning coach for hockey specific training...lots of power/acceleration training mixed with strength and anaerobic components. I'm going over to the new gym to meet with the guy on Friday...should be pretty cool. He comes recommended by some players whose opinion/game I respect and I liked his approach when I talked to him the first time.

All in all, I think that this is just what I need. I'm not really suited for or interested in pure bodybuilding (and do not have the genetics for it)...and I've always been more about the strength/function than looks/decorative aspect of weight training. Also, I'm at the point where I need someone who knows more than I do to get me to the next level and guide my training.

So it should be an interesting summer...I have the luxury of pretty much devoting my summer to training and fun stuff and I am looking forward to it! :)

I ended up playing hockey last night, then had to hang out after hockey for a bit, bumped into a bunch of friends, and then ended up staying out to watch the rest of the Wings/Avalanche game which went into OT.

So much for catching up on sleep...I managed to get in just after midnight.

And I overslept this morning, so my workout will have to wait until later this afternoon/early evening.

So I'm driving to work this morning, around 8:00, feeling sleepy and wishing I was still in bed and as I am driving through this farmy/rural stretch, I see a disheveled looking guy sitting in a lawn chair in his front yard drinking beer, with what looks like a lot of his personal belongings strewn all around him...apparently someone had a REALLY rough night...LOL!

Yeah, you guys were right...sometimes you just need to hear it from an outside source. I've been spending the last couple of days sleeping and doing really a whole lot of nothing and I feel better...

But this morning I had to go running because I just needed to MOVE...nothing strenuous, just a comfortable little 2 mile jaunt. It was such a nice morning, cool and sunny, just the right temperature so that activity felt good but I didn't feel like I was going to overheat...

Went to the public market this morning and found some spring vegetables and some other good stuff. Some friends are coming over later this afternoon to cook out and catch up, so until then I will probably be sleeping/reading out on the deck...

Tuesday I go to the new facility with my new strength/conditioning person so I guess I'll enjoy these last few pain-free days ;)

Tuesday: fun cardio

I found some trails that are hidden a mere 3 miles from where I live. 40 min. of brisk hiking took me up and down some big hills, on nice dirt paths, over a stream or two, and to a high point in my area which gave me a great view of the surrounding area and the city buildings way off in the distance.

Also met with my strength and conditioning coach. He talked to me for almost an hour about my past experience, my goals, where I think I'm at and where I want to go, my strengths/weaknesses/past injuries and gave me an outline of the training program he uses with his hockey players. I also got to observe a group of players that he is currently training going through some of their workout for that day. I was very impressed with his thoroughness and his philosophy and am psyched to get started.

We decided that I'll do my testing (physio evaluation, measurements, balance, strength, speed, quickness, flexibility, aerobic and anaerobic conditioning, etc.) before I leave for hockey camp next weekend and then get started on my program when I get back from camp. I can't wait...it looks like fun! :)

Today I did a bunch of errands in town on my bike. It was a good way to get some activity in without too much fuss and sometimes it's easier to get around when you don't have to fuss with parking, etc.

Also went for a 3 mile easy run. This week is all about just keeping active and saving my energy for next week. So far, so good.

Food for today:
M1: 4 egg white +1 egg w/feta, peppers, onions
M2: ww toast w/PB
M3: turkey on sourdough w/swiss cheese, horseradish, mustard
M4: cottage cheese
M5: veggie/bean chili, green salad, 1 biscotti
M6: protein shake

Wednesday: light lifting and cardio

Gym today, light leg day and 50 min. of Spinning class. The light leg day will pre-empt any soreness for the first few days of hockey camp and the Spinning gets me my cardio while giving my knees and other joints a break from the pounding of running.

Leaving for camp tomorrow later in the day or Friday morning so this is it for workouts for awhile...

Food for today:
M1: bran cereal, skim milk
M2: tuna & cottage cheese, vegetable soup
M3: roast beef on ww, ff Swiss, mustard, horseradish, pickles
M4: pasta dish of some sort
M5: protein shake

Just a quick update...about halfway through camp right now and I'm holding up quite well :) I'm glad I'm in good shape b/c people are dropping like flies with sore groins, quad problems, general fatigue...but then 5-6 hours of skating will do that to you!

I'm also having internet withdrawal as this is the longest I have gone without access in a very long time. The public library is small and Nazi-like about using the computers for anything but reference and research.

So anyways, I'm having fun...days are pretty much wake, skate, eat, skate, nap, skate, eat, sleep. I had to ask someone what day of the week it was today ;)

After a long night's sleep, which I really needed, I'm starting to feel human again. My muscles are tired and I'm a little beat up (got some spectacular bruises), but overall camp was a really positive experience. Got some really good feedback on stuff that I want to improve on and some good commentary on my physical style of play :D

I'm glad I was in really good condition going in...lots of people missed practice sessions and/or didn't make it all the way through due to injuries and lack of reserves. It makes a huge difference to be used to working all out and then recovering quickly.

Next few days are rest and recovery, then right into working with my new strength/conditioning coach, which will give my workouts a new direction for the rest of the summer.

Monday: light back workout (to work out the stiffness from the previous week)

Tuesday: 4 mile run (to loosen up the legs from last week)

Wednesday: bike ride to friend's house and back, ~30 miles or so
(just because it was a nice day and I felt like it ) :)

Still in rest/recovery mode, taking it easy this week between last week's punishment at camp and having to do my morning battery of tests with my new strength/conditioning person on Saturday morning. Even when I'm allegedly "resting," I can't stay still...

Today's workout: helping out on a roofing job...hotter than hell, schlepping 70 lb. bundles of shingles around, wielding the nail gun. Fun in the sun ;)

To update on the last couple of days, Saturday I had a series of physical tests/assessment with my new trainer, Sunday I played hockey, and Monday I got food poisoning or something like that...so I really haven't felt like myself until today. Today I'm back to eating real food (as long as it's bland) and I'm starting to get my energy back.

I had planned to go for a long bike ride with a friend this afternoon but it's storming like crazy here, so that's off until tomorrow.

Thursday I have a meeting with my trainer to go over the results of my tests/assessments and talk about designing a training plan for me...I'm excited about that :)

I also started teaching a 3-week intensive Statistics class on Monday (which I cut short that day b/c I was losing the battle against getting the food poisoning....I'll tell ya, throwing up in ditch by the side of the road may be amusing late on a weekend night, but it's pretty embarassing at 10:00 a.m. on a Monday morning!).

Never a dull moment!

Weekend update: Feeling MUCH better than earlier in the week but still feeling the effects...quick to fatigue and not at the top of my energy, but I'm getting there!

Friday: 2 mile run

Saturday: a.m. hockey, running tests with new trainer (sprints and agility patterns)

Sunday: hockey again

Tomorrow I have my first real workout with the new trainer. I will most likely start a new journal at that point since my training will be going off in a new direction. :)
