View Full Version : Coffee = Laxitive?

I always wonder why every time I have a cup of coffee, it's like BANG, gotta go.
Is it something about caffeine that does that?

the reflex action which triggers bowel movements is not well understood.
presumably this is happening in the morning, and might have something to do with the stimulating action of consuming a warm item first thing in the morning after a period of intestinal relaxtation during the sleeping hours
I though caffine had a slight diuretic effetc?

It does, but he's talking about having to go the other direction, I think.

I used to have a cup a coffee around 2:30 pm when second shift came in and usually had to poop. Could be habit though. I've heard it is a laxative. I've also heard a warm glass of water in the morning does the same thing. Maybe the temp. But Buff Stuff said it happens to him with caffience pills. Why are we worried?

i have a few friends that say coffee acts like 'go time' for them too heh. doesnt do a damn thing to me thou.
the doc has an interesting insight on it thou....weird that buff stuff has the same thing with caffeine tablets.
buff stuff do you take the tablets on a routiene, or is it just at random times? if you were on some sort of routiene id say its just coincidence and that your highly regular, many a man would envy you :p

From the little that I have read caffiene can stimulate gastric secretions which could explain the bowel movements after drinking coffee. Could also be due to the oils that are in coffee causing some GI distress.
