I thought this would be a good first post for this forum. This comes directly from my class notes in "Sports Nutrition." I think it could be very helpful to those having questions about different companies. They are all questions posed about the company/product being inquired about.

1. Does the product promise quick improvement or immmediate change?
2. Does it contain a secret ingredient or formula?
3. Is it advertised mainly by anecdotes? (athletes promotions)
4. Are Star Athletes the main source of publicity?
5. Does it exagerate truth about a nutrient?
6. Is it advertised in a magazine whose publishers sell nutritional aids?
7. Does it use results of a single study or poorly designed study? Is it pertinent to you? (ex. many companies test their protein powders on Burn Patients)
8. Is it expensive when compared to equivalent nutrients?
9. Is it a recent discovery not available from any other source?
10. Is it a claim thats to good to be true?

My hope is that anyone who reads this will understand what these mean. I wish I would have known these things my Freshman year at college before I waisted around $400.00 in supps in about 3 months time. Any questions feel free to ask. :D

Good advise spidey, I always try to find out as much as I can about a new sup before I waist any money on it.

If its still on the market after 6 months, then its worth taking a look at otherwise I don't bother.

Hehehe, I buy my protien in a 25lb pail. Its made by MVP but I've been told they won't be selling it that way anymore as the price of whey is going up AGAIM!

In my personal opinion, when you buy a 5lb tub of protein you are buying quantity and not quality. I think it is common sense that a company would not sell a large amount of protein for a low price without puttin a large amount of fillers in the protein. This is why I think in every large tub of protein there is about 60% pure protein and 40% fillers. This is just my 2 cents.

i think buying protein in large amounts is just like buying juice or flour or anything els in large amounts. the company makes it a bit cheaper to get you to buy more of their product. since there is a large markup on products the it is profitable for the company to make large tubs cheaper because you are buying so much of the product. its the same as buy one pizza get the second one half price.

I, too, buy Prolab's 5lb jar. Protein should cost little, its nothing special. Buying a 5lb jar is just like buying eggs from a farm or buying food at Costco, which sells everything in bulk. A lot of people say that the 5lb jars dont contain as much protein as they say on the label - well, in that case, take 2 servings of it at a time!!! And its still cheaper then the 2lb or packet protein powders!
Oh yeah, one more thing, the reason why MRP cost so much more is 'cause they are packaged separately!!

Supplement companies have to label the ingredient of their products in the order of quantity. In other words, the first ingredient listed has the most of it in the supplement. The second listed has the second most. and so on....so, different size tubs don't have more filler than others. Not worth there time either for manufacturing.

As for cost per use. You pay a penalty to buy in less quantity. (Convenience, most people don't want to carry a 50 lbs tub home and have to store it.) Don't worry, they're making good money on the big tub!... your just paying even more for the less quantity.
Its gravy for them that’s all...

Hope this helps ya, if your going the buy supplements(supplements suck), at least get the most for your money...get the bigger tub (buying in less quantity, they're really getting ya!)
