3. Belial
4. Santiago
5. Adam Mc.
6. ElPietro
7. BCC
8. Latty
9. ?
10. ?
These are just guesses off of the top of my head. Someone help me out.
I dont know chris's highest 1RM, or body's, all I remember is Belial pulling 600, and BCC pulling 500.
I know I don't belong up there.

I dont either Mik---not yet at least. After tomorrow I might make it around 9 or 10, LOL. WBB is a great place for competition if you ask me. So many strong a*s guys.

As far as I know, Chris has pulled 605, I've done 600, body's done 583, Santiago's at 505, BCC and Peter have done 500... I know Yates has a big dead, I wonder what his max is.

I pulled 460, but there should be a rule about the lift not making the list until 500 is reached. PowerMan would be among the almost-500'ers club as well.

I've done 505 in a meet, 515 gym....I'm looking to tap into the 550's at my next meet....I'd say latman deserves to win, not only because his lifts were done in meets, but at a low bodyweight. I would beat anyone here in a meet at 198, be it full or just deadlift. :)
Looks like mason wins tho.....highest lift at a pretty low weight

I dunno man, it's not that easy. Just because some of us can, doesn't mean it wasn't tough to reach. I wouldn't dismiss it like that until you've tried it and passed it. Considering it's the internet, and more specifically a board dedicated to weightlifting, and we still only have a handful of 500lb pullers that should tell you it's not exactly common.
Bam Bam
01-16-2003, 08:52 AM
well if your doing over 450 for reps or hell even over 400 you should be able to pull 5 once thats all im saying

Not totally true. For the longest time I was pulling 405 for 8-10 reps. But didn't have a prayer at anything over 475.

01-16-2003, 11:35 AM
I think, or hope, Callahan was being sarcastic. But truthfully there is a huge difference between the effort necessary to pull 400 and the effort necessary to pull 500. It's like making the jump on bench from 225 to 315. It's something about "progressive overload" or "diminishing returns." You can't continue to make gains at the same pace. Otherwise everyone that went from 135 to 225 on bench in 6 months would add 900 pounds to their bench in 5 years, and we know that's not going to happen.
There is more to be said for progress for someone getting an extra rep at 495 than there is for someone getting 5 extra reps at 405.
MonStar
01-16-2003, 11:40 AM
Great points SF, I understand the point that youre making completely. For the most part 405 x 1 isnt even comparable to 500 x 1. I think of it like bench---a guy who benches 315 x 1 isnt even close to the guy who can press 4 plates for 1.

I know a LOT fewer people that pull 500
Therefore, 405 ain't that impressive (to me at least).

Yeah, I keep thinking about that with deadlifts. I know I'm not going to have 120 pounds improvement in the next 4.5 months like I did in my first 4.5 months of ever doing them. It sure is fun though when you are getting early gains on an exercise.

The fact that you know the impact of .01" difference in sole size and how it may or may not impact a dead is gay. But I guess when .01" represents a goodly portion of your total height it does become a significant factor eh? :p

Damn Yates!! Youre ahead of us all, holy *****. Pulling 605 for a double is definitely higher than pulling 605 for a single.
1. Yates 605 x 2
2. chris mason / Belial 605 x 1
3. body 583 x 1
4. gino 565 x 1
5. FortifiedIron 535 x 1
6. Santiago / Spiderman / ElPietro 505 x 1
7. BCC / MonStar 500 x 1
Wow.
I haven't maxed out in a couple years, but here's what I've done in the past.
176 lbs @ 17 yrs old - 417 lbs (olympic kg weights)
215 lbs @ 20 yrs old - 565 lbs
198 lbs @ 22 yrs old - 545 lbs
The last heavy set I did was 435 lbs x 12 reps. Right now I weigh 210 and I keep getting stronger. I think I could beat my PR if I put some more time into deadlifting - I've enjoyed doing clean and jerks instead though as of recently.

This is a great website full of a lot of great people, but when it comes to credibility, I tend to give the same amount to everyone that I have never personally met. They are personalities, some with pics, some without. You clearly differ in that regard and thats fine.
Belial
01-18-2003, 08:29 PM
Lamar gant's impressive, but his body is so specialized in that regard that it's almost hard to be inspired by his lifts.
I mean, I can't find a decent pic, there's a good one out there somewhere, but in this one you can see his ROM can't be more than 8". lol. http://www.benchpresschampion.com/CHAMPIONS2/Gant2.jpg
Still impressive as hell, but... Something about watching a bigger guy tear the weight that mile and a half up his body is cooler.

yeah, he got suspended because he was on concerta(sp?) a generic or another form of ridilyn which is illegal I guess, wish he'd have known a little earlier and that's all it was. He just turned 17 the 23rd of Dec. He's totalling 1430 right now. he is standing here right now telling me this as I type it so it is right from him.

That picture of Lamar reminds me of a guy whose name escapes me. I think it was Annello, or something like that. He was a world record holder in the dead, same sort of build. Gorilla arms, and stubby legs = no ROM.
....and no, he spine is not compressing that much, he has gorilla arms.
Santiago
01-19-2003, 02:32 PM
Vince Annello, Chris...and Lamar in fact did have issues with his spine.....my pull is under 12" btw
PS Chris, your comment on the credibility issue reminded me of a certain enormous fitness site....I remember a thread in general chat (they have a powerlifting forum) where several guys claimed to have pulled 700lbs, but said they no longer deadlift "because it's bad for your back."
I'll see if I can find it to cut and paste.
Berserker
01-19-2003, 02:49 PM
Do they use 100lb plates or 45s? Mine is 18" with 45.
100lbs plates and 45's have the same diameter.
Lamar did have something wierd with his spine. I think it was scoliosis(sp??). Not sure if that would help on his deadlift or not though
Chris Rodgers
01-19-2003, 03:35 PM
You can say all you want about his monkey arms, but his techique on all his lifts was so great that he held records in the bench and squat too. Not too many people are on top of the sport with both deads and benches. Usually one or the other.

That guy sure does look like he has gorilla arms to me, but who knows. Hes still pulling a hell of a lot of weight.
chris mason
01-20-2003, 11:31 AM
He may have scoliosis of the spine, or something of the like, but spinal compression is not what makes him a great deadlifter. A deformity of the spine which causes his torso to be shorter, assuming the spine is not greatly weakened by the deformity, would all for a greater deadlift.
He does have long ass arms, look at the picture. If he was a great bencher as well, then more power to him.
Saying that his technique was so great is not really the key to his lifts, in my opinion. His genetics are the keys. There can only be so much technique to a deadlift. Powerlifts are not as technique oriented as Olympic lifts.
Chris Rodgers
01-21-2003, 03:14 PM
I said technique because if we showed you a picture of a guy with a huge chest/stomach and short stocky arms benching, you'd say that guy was built for benching. Lamar Gant, gorilla arms and all, is not built for benching, but because of his desire and hard work on his technique he became a great bencher as well.
There was an article in Powerliftng USA that said that his spine actually compressed during the lift and shortened his ROM. They said doctors back this up and it was a strange phenomenon. I dunno.

I saw the 615, good job. I am not ready yet to do it. As you know, that won't be for a few weeks. By then, you will probably be at 650lbs. It seems as your progression has no limits.

I'm 21. Been lifting since I was 15. Ever since day one I was strong. I have won quite a few trophies in competitions, but haven't competed in almost 2 years.
Upon graduation of high school, I was 5'7" 192 lbs. Best lifts were
bench:345x1
squat:475x1
deadlift:505x1
I've gone through some phases of wanting to get big & strong and some where I wanted to be smaller and ripped. I have a bad muscular imbalance in my lower back so I didn't do any heavy lifting for over a year. I did NO squats and NO deadlifts. I've only been doing squats for 2 1/2 months now, and deadlifts for almost 1 month.
Anything else you wanna know?

So, in other words, you have only been training squats for 2.5 months now, deads for 1 month, prior to that you did no heavy lifting for a year, and you are now setting personal records? This is after you had trained for 4 years previously. That makes absolutely no sense.

One of the issues I find a bit tough to believe is in the bodyweight thread you say the very first time ever you tried squatting at an age of 15 you did a set of 315lbs 7 times. Squats is something that usually the first few times you can't do much weight as your body is learning to deal with the akward movement. To do 315x7 your first time, when you first start lifting ever at the age of 15 really, REALLY sounds dubious at best.
If you did it, my apologies, but frankly I find it difficult to buy.

It is truth, believe it or not. They started me with 1 plate on each side - it was obviously too light. Then we tried 2. Still way too light. We then went to 275 and I handled it like nothing. Coach, and all of the other players, were in awe. So we did 315 and I got it 7 times....

I think WBB has a few genetic prizes that could add weight to your idea, Pete. Belial, chris, PowerMan and benchmonster (among others I'm not intentioanlly leaving out) could add their two cents in about what they squatted "in the beginning." I'd also like to hear from gino and Yates.

No way. At 15 you have a very limited, if nonexistent, background with weights. And as he said, he first lifted at 15, so nonexistent sounds about right. That being said, I'll be so bold as to say there's no way a brand new trainee's CNS would do 315 for 7 reps the first time out. Not even filled to the brim with steroids.
I don't know a lot about Paul Anderson, but I would imagine he had some type of background in the gym before squatting 315.

Well I'd hardly consider myself a genetic prize, nor was I going to say anything about this particular segment of the thread, but since you asked, the first time I squatted to legal depth was after a good year of training-- I'd been a "quarter squatter" before then. I was also about 150 lbs. I don't remember what I took to parallel the first time, but it was surely no more than about 225.

No background. He is a lifter from the 50s, former gold medal winner, who is reported to have squatted over 1000 lbs sans belt, wraps, or a suit. One of the most famous strongmen of all time. He used to squat a barbell with boxes filled with coins on each end, which weighed ~1000 lbs, 3 times per day as part of a Vegas act.

I don't jump on people with high lifts, just those with high lifts that don't make sense. Your story, as told, is very hard to believe. You also made it a point to state how short of a time you had been lifting etc., I found that unusual.

I made it a point to state how long I've been doing squats and dead lifts because although these numbers are my personal bests to date, I know they're going to keep increasing quickly so it's not like they're going to remain my bests for long. If I had been squatting heavy for 3 years straight and reached a point of 515 for 3 reps, it would be likely that I would maybe hit 525 for 3 reps only after a few more months of banging away at it. But since I've only been squatting for a short time, I'm going to make that jump next week.
There was a point where I was squatting 495 for 10 reps, but I don't count it because they weren't good reps. This was a few years ago before I really started to learn that going deeper was essential. I can't explain how I got so high so fast on squat and dead lift other than my legs have always been strong. I can take 6 months off lifting altogether and I guarantee I can come right back to 405 for reps on my first day. In fact, I've done that a number of times. I do believe there is such a thing as muscle memory -- so when you reach a certain level and for some reason stop, it’s much easier to get back to that level you were at before. I've never worked dead lifts much until recently. The combination of squatting and dead lifting have complimented each other strengthening both my lower back and my legs tremendously, thus making both lifts rather.
I've already arranged to have somebody at the gym Wednesday with a digital camera to take some pictures of our workout. I haven't found a digital camcorder yet, but if I do, I'll be sure to get some video also.

Its just, like you said, youre making some impressive claims and guys here at WBB just want you to back them up with pics, etc. thats all. No big deal. Were all on the same team here. :):)

I remember that being a big deal at my highschool to all of the other football players. I had 2 coaches stand on both sides of me and make sure it was parallel.
What the heck has happened in the interim? As a point of interest here, maybe you should consider your relative lack of progress a product of your switching routines and ideologies every other week. Consistency is the mother of greatness.

I dont know what you mean chris, sorry. Well okay after football season freshman year, I had a non-cancerous tumor taken out of my left knee. I didnt squat again until sophmore year I believe. And even then I dont think I ever got above 365. Junior year for some reason I didnt work my legs AT ALL. LOL---you probably remember posting here every now and then like 'I dont work my legs because I dont like big legs.' Haha. Senior year I started to get into it again with squats, etc. And now I am a freshman in college.

You don't know what I mean? Ok, you have been training hard for some period of time. Your baseline squatting strength, to parallel, at a very young and physically immature age, is 345 lbs. That means you are born to squat. Most people don't squat anywhere near that their first time, especially when they are 14! So, your relative lack of progress, you just did 455 the other day, only ~100 lbs since you have started lifting, doesn't make sense. The only explanation I can think of is the fact that you have never stick with a program long enough to make it work. That is what everyone on this site is always getting on you about.

No, that works. Make sure you post a scan of your driver's license and make your face visible in the pics as well. Then there can be little doubt. Not much more can be done to substantiate yourself on the web.

Damn nice lift if you can do them. Enough to make me jealous as can be, anyways. (And like other people said, don't take it personal that your lifts are being questioned. Your new here, and credibility ain't shown.. and you're posting some big lifts. It's the internet, where every 90 pound fat kid can bragging about this or that, when they haven't a clue what their talking about. Makes everyone question stuff. And no, I'm not calling you that kid).

Something like "WBB strongest man" or maybe even "Chris Mason Killer" LOL just kidding. Anyway i'm not sure what he's going for but it will be somewhere in the low 500's for sure.

Don't take anything as a lack of support. This site is quality because it doesn't tolerate bull****. When we ask someone to substatiate lifts, it's simply to keep the site credible, not to knock you. I've been here awhile and I was recently questioned about a squat in my journal. I know the guys aren't knocking me, they're just looking out. So don't take it personal at all.

Hey guys,
I understand what you're all saying. Indeed, this is the internet where any Joe Shmoe can post some stats and say he’s the strongest man alive. I too would be suspicious. On the other hand though, the attitudes of some of the posts were not simply to see if I was legit, they were downright derogatory in nature. If they were simply people questioning my abilities, that would be fine. A simple "Show us pictures and we'll believe it." would have sufficed, but instead some chose to post sarcastic implications of things such as "So, I assume yourself to be a super genetic freak of nature." Nowhere did I claim to be this, or even anything close.
To put this to rest, BPP and I are going to take pictures this Wednesday during my squat workout, so you can see me doing the lifts like I've said I could... and then you can take a few more bites of the foot you've so eloquently placed in your mouth.
In closing, I respect you guys for trying to keep this board truthful and reputable so I'll do my part by posting pictures of my lifts, along with some sort of identification that it’s really me.

Here is the deal, it is not so much the lifts. There are plenty of people who can perform the claimed lifts. It is the story behind the lifts that I find very hard to believe. Very few , and I mean VERY FEW people could perform the lifts under the circumstances that are claimed. As to you being a freak, that is exactly what you are claiming. If your story is true, you are as good or better than the men respected as the greatest lifters of all time.

Okay chris I want to clear up a few things. First of all I want to clear up my age. I was 15 my freshman year when I squatted 345 or whatever it was. 340-350 somewhere in there. Lets just say 345 for argements sake. Something else that I want to clear up, is that that was NOT the first time I had ever squatted. Not even a little bit. I started working out around 3-4 months after my 12th birthday. My dad had his old freeweights and a huge multi-exercise machine. I remember benching 195, powercleaning 205, and squatting ~345 or something all my freshman year. Some how I only could jerk (powerful OH press) 135. Anyway back to what I was saying, I had been doing squats, and bench, and curls and skulls and all that since I was 12. Especially DB flyes. I remember when I first did DB flyes with the 20s, and then the 30s. DAMN they felt good. LOL---I still really like them.

Monstar, you still don't get it, or at least you are speaking like you don't get it. It is quite possible you never will. In essence, you are saying that in the last 4 years, your first 4 of training, your squat has only increased 100 lbs. Not good results. Why? The reason I mentioned, and many other have stated, you can't stick with anything (there may be other reasons).
Westside seems to be working well for you. I hope you stick with it.
I won't comment any further on this topic. I just hope that someday, you will be able to make a critical assesment of your actions in this regard, and you find they are ill advised. It should help you in your entire life, not just lifting.

Well, then I guess that concludes it -- I am officially a freak! Since high school, (and not including the past month I've currently been dead lifting) I have dead lifted at most 10 times. I graduated high school almost 3 years ago. I squatted religiously for about a year after I graduated, and I occasionally squatted when I joined the gym I currently go to (been there almost 2 years now). Shortly after joining, the pain in my lower back was so bad that I could hardly walk. A trip to the doctor quickly revealed a severe muscle imbalance in my hips which was causing them to be crooked. A direct result of the crooked hips was my spine being all kinked. After a long time of just completely neglecting the lower half of my body, I decided to do them when I started working out with this new partner.
So in closing, I have only been training squat and dead lifts for a VERY short time and yes they are pretty high. Reasons? Body maturing, learned better form, actually lifting with a motivated lifting partner, using a real powerlifting belt, knee wraps, stronger mentally. There is a long list. It's not like my lifts have jumped much from their starting points. The first day I started squatting again I did 405 for a few reps. The first day I dead lifted again (after a month of squatting), I got 455 for 5 reps. So just maybe I am genetically predisposed to being a "freak" as it was so nicely put.

Chris,
If I had a firewire and the appropriate software to transfer the video and format it, the videos would be up already. But I don't so I have to wait for my friend to do it. I'm gonna keep on him about it. Sometime's he likes to "take his grand ol' time" doing things, but I'm gonna try to make him do this quick. I'm gonna see him today and see if he has it done yet. If he didn't do it yet, I'll yell at him and hopefully he'll have it done by tomorrow.

I highly doubt that I can deadlift that much right now. I'm at a bit of a mental block on my deads. Two weeks ago when I deadlifted, I got 515 for 5, then tried 525 and couldn't budge it. Maybe a bit of physical fatigue, and probably a lot of mental fatigue. I need to overcome it in my mind first!

Deads is all mental, bro. Moved weight two weeks ago like it was nothing. 5 pounds more this last week felt like a god damn ton, and I ended up getting owned halfway up.
I'm also anxiously awaiting the videos...not that I move anywhere near that amout of weight, but I say the more heavy lifters on here, the better. It means more competition for the Belials around here, and more inspiration for all the smaller guys.
