That might have something to do with it (the Driver being rough, not my toughness). The protein powders I use tend to make quite thin shakes, while I think most slow-release powders are thicker (casin)?
Oh, if you think you had a binge day, you don't even want to hear about some of mine. I've had steak sandwiches that I'd estimate at 3,000 calories. :D

Larger than distance running, but I seriously doubt they'll get large to the point of looking bad. Unless you're taking some very, very special vitamins and lifting hard as well.

Tryska: outside, baby. I hate the wussy machines. My neighbors probably think I'm crazy. I go flying by in one direction looking like all the demons of hell are at my heels, then go ambling back by in the other direction - then fly by again. It'll be really funny when I get up to 10 intervals!! (And UGA always sucks in everything but football.)
Borris: yeah, but I'm already pretty muscular. As long as I lose some of the fat-size I don't mind putting on a little muscle size - but I don't want to look like those speed skaters in the Olympics. (Because, you know, doing intervals twice a week is probably exactly how they got that way.... ) I'm just being stupid and girly. Never mind.
Craig: sweet. I'm going over to watch the tourney on Friday with a bunch of friends. It'll be good to see ole Clemson. Yeah, didn't y'all used to have a basketball team? (See, I can say that, because UNC sucks right now too.)
HY: I'm over my temporary leg-size phobia now. I was just being a paranoid girl for a minute. I just worry sometimes that I'm going to get really big and start looking like a guy without realizing it (because the changes are so slow, and because your 'eye' for what looks good changes too - I don't want to get to the point where I look as freaky big to regular people as Nicole Bass does to me.) It's kind of irrational, I know. I don't know if any of the other girls on here struggle with this. (I put on muscle fairly easily.) Yadda yadda yadda. I'm done whining now. Damn - I'll think up any excuse to get out of cardio, huh? ;)
Paul: hey, always glad to have a new text-face popping up in the journal. (See, us southerners are hospitable, too!) I actually like all the teams in the ACC (except Florida) and pull for any of them once UNC is out. Yes, even Duke.
Workhorse: yep, I'm going to get down to 16% if it kills me - and sprints sound like the shizzit for getting there. (And have I told you how glad I am that there's another Carolina fan around here? Go Heels!)
Pup: :D Right back at you, sugar!

Sprinting will make one look very good, I'm sure only a slight improvement in your case.
The thing I like to tell people that are worried about getting "too big" is this: You never wake up one day and say "Holy SH!T! I'm huge!". If you're too concerned, take frequent measurements and adjust.

Awww, you sweet thing, you. I know I'm not going to 'wake up huge' - I'm just worried that I'm going to think I look fabulous and the rest of the (non-lifting) world will mistake me for a lean-yet-muscular adolescent male. (My shoulders are already wider than my hips, and my boobies are on their way out with the rest of the fat .) Because the changes happen slowly enough that the eye adjusts, and because I've already changed my perception of what's 'too muscular' on a woman a lot. (I used to think that Laura Combes, from the 80's, was freakishly huge - now I think she looks great. Although I still wouldn't want to be as big as her.) Anyhow, I've deputized my lifting partners to tell me if I start looking like a man. (However, judging by the amount of avid male attention I've been getting lately, I'm probably not real close to that line yet...) ;)
Galileo: Who knows? Death may be....very nice.
OK, did my cals for today. I am redeemed (somewhat).
M1:10:30 am (slept late this morning. It was fabulous, too.) 1 cup oats, 5 scrambled whites, 1 whole egg
M2:2:30 pm: 1 large apple (I had a can of tuna with me too, but I was driving, and I only have 2 hands. So I just ate the apple. Better than nothing.)
M3:3:15 pm: 1 cup steamed cabbage, 1/2 chicken breast
M4:5:15 pm: 8 whites/1 yolk scrambled with 1/2 cup spinach, 1/2 cup mushrooms, 1/4 cup salsa, 1.5 oz turkey breast
M5:8:45 pm: 6 oz broiled salmon, 4 cups raw spinach, 1 tbs olive oil, 1/4 cup pecans
M6:11:30 pm: 1 cup nonfat cottage cheese, 1 tbs flax
Plus my usual 20 g of fish oil caps.
Breakdowns:
1993 cals
99 g fat (12 sat, 32 poly, 47 mono)
102 g carbs (22 g fiber)
175 g protein
47% fat, 17% carbs, 37% protein
I feel much better about today's food. Back on track, baby.
Also, after the sprints, I fancied I could feel myself oxiding fat. I'm a nut.

You'll be fine. And I mean that in the R&B sense: "Faaiiiiiinnne"
Seriously. One of my friends (female) is quite lean (~14%) with a far better lat spread than I have. I've seen her do 18 wide grip chins, and stop because she was bored. Regardless, she has an amazing V-taper to reasonably small hips, and looks incredible. Incredible in a sexually attractive way, not just in a bodybuilding sense.
A female with a lean/powerful, but not enormous physique exudes a different kind of quality (of course, I like confident women, so... :) ).
She's also never seemed to be at a loss for male company, either. ;)

LOL gal.....this is so right on the money. And it applies not only to women but men as well. I use to DISPISE big quads on bodybuilders and I would have loved my legs just as they are now 3 years ago. Now I want them bigger. I've adjusted my mindset and perception to what is now acceptable. I don't like freaky huge quads on bodybuilders, but now 25 inch quads aren't enough (I'm not even at that point yet), I want 26!!!! That's my goal. :)

OK, here's today's workout. It was a quickie - I worked a double today and only had an hour and a half (and that includes showering and re-beautifying.)
Pullups
1x4 negatives only (medium grip)
1x8, 70 lbs assist (wide-ass grip)
1x5.5, 55 lbs assist (medium grip)
1x4.5, 55 lbs assist (medium grip, hands parallel)
Trying out different grips today to see what felt best. (I've always done the wide grip overhands till now - those and the last set with hands parallel felt like they hit the back the best, so I'll stick with those.)
(What is the difference between pullups and chins, anyhow?)
One-arm DB rows
1x6 each side, 40 lb'er (!)
1X8 each side, 35 lb'er
1x6 each side, 40 lb'er
I kind of surprised myself on these - I haven't done them in a WHILE, and I figured the 40's would be pretty heavy. Nope. (Well, they did get kind of heavy on that last set...)
Biangular rows:
1x10, 50 lbs per side
1x8, 55 lbs per side
Upright BB rows
1x10, 40
1x5, 50
DB military press
1x10, 25's
1x8, 25's
Rear iso raises superset with bent arm lateral raises
1x10, 25's/1x6, 20's
1x8, 25's/1x5, 20's
HEY! Who poured napalm over my shoulders and set them on fire when I wasn't looking? (In other words, OWWWWWW.)
Front raises
1x6, 15's
Shrugs
1x10, 25's
And then, in the parlance of Borris, I was "figgity done". Haven't done the food yet today; I will go and do it and come back and post AGAIN. (Boy, you all are lucky - you're gettin' a good healthy dose of the CG postin' love tonight!)

Here's the promised food. (I know you have all been waiting with bated breath to know exactly what-all I ate today. So here ya go.)
M1: 10:00 am (slept in again. Sweet.) 1 cup oats, 1 small banana, 5 whites/1 whole egg, 1 cup green tea (yum.)
M2: 1:00 pm: 3 oz turkey, 1 cup broccoli
M3: 3:00 pm: (preworkout; I'm still out of whey/dextrose, so I'm improvising with whole foods and nighttime protein blend. I did some complex carbs here so that they would be where they needed to be during the workout.) 1 cup homemade vegetarian chili (3/4 kidney beans, tomatoes, spices, onions), 3 oz turkey
M4: 3:30 pm: 2 scoops driver (started drinking it at beginning of workout; finished it @ 4:30 pm, along with 50 g dextrose from Smarties and creatine.) (I'm going to 1fast's store tomorrow if I have to crawl to Burlington on my hands and knees - I'm out of EVERYTHING.)
M5: 5:30 pm: 5 whites, 1 whole egg scrambled with 1/2 cup spinach, 1/2 cup mushrooms, 1/4 cup salsa; 1 cup blackeyed peas (mmmm); 1 1/2 glasses unsweet iced tea (see how damn dedicated I am?!? I HATE unsweet tea - I've lived in the South all my life!)
M6: 9:30 pm: 7 oz broiled salmon, 3 cups turnip greens, 1 cup green tea
Plus 20 g fish oil (7 caps, 3x daily)
Breakdowns:
2339 cals
69 g fat (13 sat, 11 poly, 34 mono) (if fish oil is mono? fitday doesn't know.)
211 g carbs (60 g fiber)
219 g protein
30% fat, 29% carbs, 42% protein
That's all, folks.
Tomorrow night I'm going to the magical land of the football players' gym. Sweet.

Chins: palms facing you, silly useless things that climbers despise
Pullups: palms away, GOOD and GOOD FOR YOU
You get bonus points if you don't wrap the thumb (ie keep it on the same side as fingers).

Just thought I'd throw this out:
There've been MANY discussions here on the value of wide/neutral/close grip chins/pullups. What the consensus was, I believe, was that it is best to put your biceps in the strongest position -- palms facing you -- so that they do not fail first in the movement, as they are likely to do when you perform palm-out pullups.
I've been doing chins for a while, and my lats are growing more quickly now than ever before.

Talking about this though really gets me to thinking though. LOL, this isn't quite the equivalent of the inner and upper chest is it? :)
My creative literary voice is passive. *waves literary license around*
I've heard the supinated vs pronated arguments. What it came down to for me was building up my strength with a narrow pronated grip, mastering that then working on wide grip supinated, which I love now. One can argue ad nauseum over what's better, but I guess it's ultimately up to you and when and how you start feeling yourself targeting your lats. Now I start off supinated and when that gets too weak to go I'll switch to pronated. There's a discussion on this in the second page of my journal I think, can't remember though. Eitherway, the truth is doing one helped me do the other. That's my 2cents. Take 'em or leave 'em. I ramble, Bah!
Just a random thought from your favorite person.

Mixmaster: I'm going to whip them one of these days. (Up till now I have only been doing the wide-grip overhands - after reading all the other responses I think I'll do some of the other kinds too, just to cover all my bases! :p)
[b]Galileo:Thanks. I will. ;)
WH: You gonna watch the tournament this weekend? (It may be a massacre....but you gotta support the boys in blue!)
V: Thanks for the links. I've only ever done WG OH pullups before - I think maybe I'll start throwing in some of the other kinds too. It's really kind of embarrassing - I ought to be able to do freaking unassisted pullups.
Bradley: Me and the chin machine have reached a sort of shaky detente. I wouldn't exactly say we're getting along, but it's not open warfare anymore.
HY: Better safe than sorry :D! I'm going to try all the different grips - you know, so I can hit all the different parts of my chest. (Just kidding! Don't yell at me!)
ec: Honey, you ramble all you want in my journal. I find you endlessly fascinating, and I hang upon your every word. ;) (A little shameless flattery is good for the soul, I always say!)
OK, here's tonight's workout. I worked out in the magical wonderland of the UNC varsity football team gym again. (There was even a real football player there tonight. I think he was a linebacker. He was very nice, and also HYOOOOOGE.) It was a kicking workout - 2 new PR's!!! Must have been something in the air - maybe I inhaled some free test or something...
(Oh yeah, the poundages are weird b/c the fancy rubber covered plates [you know, for convenient dropping] are in kg's. I had to do A LOT of math. Actually, my friend had to do a lot of math for me - I'm a liberal arts type.)
Sumos
1x6, 133
1x3, 177
1x3, 188
1x2, 198 - this was a new PR, until...
1x1, 220!!
Sweet.
Romanians
1x8, 144
1x6, 155
1x6, 166
Clearly, there's still some more in there, but my low back was already pretty fried and I didn't want to push it, so I did reps instead of adding more weight. It's still the most I've done on this one.
Glute-ham raises
1x8, bw
1x8, bw
It's amazing how much easier these are on a bench designed for them rather than on the floor with my feet hooked under my big old lifting partner's ass.
Ham curls
Lying, single leg, plate loaded: 1x6 each side, 45 lbs per leg
Seated, both legs, weight stack: 1x10, 140 lbs; 1x10, 160 lbs
Ab stuff
They have a cool little thing like an inclined bench with a little cable that runs over the back and attaches to a plate holder - it has 2 ropes with handles that come over your shoulders and you do crunches. (Kind of like rope crunches but with more ROM). I liked it. Did 1x15 with 20 lbs and 1x15 with 25 lbs.
Now I'm tired. And I still have to do my food.
I'll be back.

Not quite... the pullups threads are a bit out of date so here I go:
Pullups rock for me, because chin up bars are rarely found on mountains. Pullups are a much more "real world" motion, e.g. pulling yourself up a wall.
On the physiology side, all variations work your lats; for me, the interesting difference is in the arm muscles. Chins obviously strongly work the biceps. Pullups move the emphasis to the brachialis, aka the "lower biceps." The same shift occurs in any pulling movement depending on the rotation of the forearm. Neutral or supinated = biceps focus; pronated = brachialis.
Cgirl: Work all of them! Change them up every week or two, or do many variations. You may indeed want to try palms facing as they may be easier because your strong biceps can assist more. I'm still wary of very wide grip pulls because I feel a ton of strange shoulder pressure.

Hey, thanks, y'all. I was pretty happy. (Really, I think there's still a little more in there right now - from adaptation or whatever - before I hit my actual max....I guess we'll see!)
Did my food.
M1: 9:30 am: 1 cup oats, 5 whites/1 whole egg
M2: 12:00 pm: 1 oz beef jerky, 50 g peanuts (gas station food. Yuck. I didn't know I would be out this long :( )
M3: 3:45 pm: 1/2 chicken breast, 1 cup cottage cheese
M4: 7:15 pm: 4 oz flank steak, 1/2 sweet potato, 2 cups broccoli
M5: 9:30 pm: normal PWO shake (I FINALLY got to the supplement store today! Yay!)
M6: sometime soon, I guess: 1 cup cottage cheese, 1 orange (I'm really not very hungry, but I guess I'll eat it, because the rest of the food today was kind of ****ty.)
Plus 20 g fish oil spread over 3 doses.
Breakdowns:
2043 cals
69 g fat (12 sat, 3 poly, 7 mono - plus 20 g from fish oil, wherever that goes)
158 g carbs (24 g fiber)
202 g protein
32% fat, 27% carb. 41% protein
I should've packed something to take with me today, but I thought I would be home in time for M2. Oh well. I'll do better tomorrow.
Good night!

Carolina beat Maryland tonight! It was a totally sweet game - we actually played well the second half! It reminded me of the Dean Smith days, when it wasn't quite so embarrassing to be a UNC fan. Anyway, I was at a party to watch the game, so the diet was a little bit awful - BUT, I didn't drink any beer. NONE. Even though my running crew is a bunch of raging drunks. And there was a keg of pale ale, so it was a sore temptation. But I resisted. Damn, I'm good. (I did eat cake, though. Damn, I'm bad.) (But it was really kickass cake. Damn, that cake was good.)
Yeah. I have to be up in 5 hours, so here it was for today:
M1:9:30 am: 1 cup oats, 1 small banana, 1 cup green tea
M2:11:15 am: 1 cup cottage cheese (these really were intended to be one meal, but I got caught up in something.)
M3:2:30 pm: 1 chicken breast, 1.5 cup broccoli, 1/2 cup mushrooms, 1/2 cup tiny tomatoes
M4:6:00 pm: 1 chicken breast, 1 apple
M5: 9:00 pm: 2 cups chili with meat, 1/2 cup guacamole, 1/2 burger patty stuffed with blue cheese, 1/4 piece chocolate pound cake with chocolate chips
Breakdowns:
2507 cals
103 g fat (26 sat, 10 poly, 34 mono + 20 g fish oil)
193 g carbs (41 g fiber)
209 g protein

I had a HELL of a refeed today. It's actually the first planned, disciplined, perfect refeed I've done - and it was totally excellent.
*smugly pats own back in self-congratulatory manner*
Here's what was so totally great about it. For one thing, I felt it coming on (actually felt the onset of the low leptin signals). Usually I try to resist the carb cravings as long as possible, and when I finally give in it's a free for all on whatever carbs are around, bad or good. (ummm, the word 'milkshake' comes to mind...) Today I ate normally for the first half of the day, felt the signals, and decided to start the refeed around 1:30 pm. Observe: not 'was swept away by the lust for carbs and lost all control over self', but 'decided to start the refeed'.
And just wait till you see the numbers! Girl whooped some dietary ASS today! The ONLY way it could have been better was if I had worked out this afternoon (as per normal gym schedule) and started the refeed immediately after. But I had to hurry home from work to watch the Heels get their asses stomped in b-ball, and rapid leptin declension waits for no man.
Here you are; read and admire. (Boy, I'm starting to sound like Narcissus. I think I like it! Y'all go on out and buy you some kneepads! :D)
M1:7:30 am: 1 cup oats, 1 small banana, 5 whites/1 whole egg, 1 cup green tea
M2:11:00 am: 1 cup cottage cheese, 3 oz turkey, 2 slices fresh pineapple, 6 grapes
The fact that I wanted the fruit was one of the things that clued me in that I was starting to crave carbs.
M3:12:30 pm: 1 cup hummus, 1 cup carrots, 1 cup cucumbers
Here I attempted to sedate the cravings with low-GI carbs to see if that would take care of it; it didn't, so I decided to go ahead with a full-on refeed.
M4:1:30 pm: 3 cups skim milk, 1/4 cup chocolate syrup, 2 cups green tea with 4 tablespoons table sugar.
I was still at work here, so I had to make do with what was on hand. Ideally I wouldn't have had so much milk sugar or fructose. But it gets better...
M5:5:00 pm: 1 cup skim milk, 4 cups fruity pebbles, 8 rolls of smarties
M6:7:45 pm: 1 cup skim milk, 4 cups cocoa pebbles, 4 rolls smarties
M7:probably around 11:00 pm: 1 cup cottage cheese (to get in some slow-release protein before bed and taper down off the carbs without a crash)
The breakdowns for the pre-refeed diet:
1485 cals: 59 g fat, 145 g carbs, 97 g protein
38/34/28 F/C/P
The breakdowns for the refeed:
2652 cals: 13 g fat, 570 g carbs, 58 g protein
5/87/9 F/C/P (that's close to perfect!)
The breakdown for the whole day (both together):
4137 cals: 72 g fat, 715 g carbs, 155 g protein
16/68/15 F/C/P
Not bad, eh?
Now I have to get back to studying. (That's why I'm home on a Saturday night, btw. Not because I'm a geek. I mean, I am a geek, but that's not why I'm home. It's because I have a bunch of **** due on Monday and I'm REALLY, REALLY far behind. I am procrastination's bitch.)

what's this about narcissus and kneepads?
hee hee just messin'....anyways, that was a helluva reffeed. great job watching the fat. do you feel like crap today, or better?
als, do you think the last meal friday night, might have cued you up for the low leptin on saturday?
carolinagirl
03-16-2003, 05:56 PM
Franji: the fruity pebbles and the cocoa pebbles are kinds of sugary breakfast cereals geared towards kids. The smarties are a kind of candy - sort of like sweet tarts. (Do you have those there?) And yeah, I am kind of turning diet nazi-ish, aren't I? Excellent! :D
Tryska: felt like total crap all night last night (sluggish and puffy, drank about a metric ton of water and couldn't keep my eyes open) but really fine today. I look a little fuller but not really soft or bloated. *shrugs* Maybe it's because I didn't eat a lot of fat or starch so I didn't get any spillover - I don't know. I'm still learning about how my body reacts to this stuff, and it keeps changing on me anyway.
I don't know about Friday night affecting leptin. I don't think so. It was higher in bad fats than I normally eat, but not really carb-y or anything... From what I understand leptin just drops over time anyway with cal restriction etc. Although I haven't really been restricting cals the last couple weeks, I have been cutting (with a few periods of maintenance, maybe 3 months out of that time) for 14 months now, and pretty hardcore for about 4 months. Also I am probably below my setpoint already, and if I had to guess I would say I'm between 19.5 and 20.5 % bf, which is getting into the low end anyway for a woman, regardless of setpoint. All of which would indicate that my leptin levels are probably chronically low-ish at this point. And it had been 4 or 5 days I think since my last refeed, so I think I was just due.
I'm going to do it just like this from now on - except I'm going to target it around workouts. Because of one thing and another (mainly crap being due on Monday) I haven't worked out at all this weekend, so I didn't reap the full benefits of the extra energy... :( (I am RARIN' to go for Monday though!!)
I'll post today's food later (when I need another study break).

I'm done eating now, so here's the ingestion protocols for today.
M1:12 am: 1 cup cottage cheese
M2:10 am: 1 scoop whey, 1 cup oats, 1 cup green tea
M3:12:30 pm: 3/4 cup cottage cheese, 1 apple
M4:3:30 pm: salad with 2 cups lettuce, 1 tomato, cucumber slices, hardboiled egg, green pepper strips, and grilled chicken breast with nasty fat-free balsamic vinaigrette
M5:7 pm: stirfry with chicken breast, zucchini, mushrooms, onions, and broccoli, with 1 tsp olive oil
M6:11 pm: 1 tbs flax, slow-release protein blend made with water and 1 cup skim milk
Plus about a million assorted vitamins, and 20 grams of fish oil. (I just ordered 1000 caps of fish oil from kilosports. I think it'll be fine if I keep it in the fridge, don't y'all? Especially considering that it's less than a 2-month supply for me?)
Breakdowns:
2045 cals
68 g fat (10 g sat, 15 g poly, 15 g mono + 20 g fish oil)
133 g carbs (26 g fiber)
223 g protein
32/22/46 F/C/P%
Been busy all day so diet was kind of crap (too many shakes and things I could eat on the go, not enough real food).

Alrighty. Today was quads and calves. Here we go.
Front squats
1x8, 95
1x6, 115
1x5, paused, 125
Good. Very good. But also very, very bad. In a good way.
Walking DB lunges
1x5, 50's (no straps; only set without them :()
1x4, 50's
1x4, 55's
1x4, 55's
I like the BB ones better - my balance is better or something.
Hammer plate-load leg extensions
1x10, 25 on each side
drop set (very wussy) (weights are per side)
1x6, 37.5
1x4, 32.5
1x4, 30
1x4, 20
1x6, 10
Oh. My. God. Teeny, unimpressive weights, I know, but I thought maybe my head would pop off and fly right across the room. I was making pitiful little noises and everything. And just for a little additional masochistic fun, I supersetted this (as soon as I could stand up) with
Sissy squats
1x8, bw
1x8, bw
Hoo boy. I was done. And I mean done.
Standing machine calf raises
3x15, bw + 145 (one set each with feet neutral, toes turned in, toes turned out)
Angled leg press calf raises
3x15, 180 in plates only (one set each with feet neutral, toes turned in, toes turned out)
Then I did a bunch of ab crap. Then I bull****ted with this guy I went to highschool with for a while. Then I came home. The End.

But yeah, I think I would really, really like Austin. So, the solution is clear: just don't go to St. Louis till after I get there, if I get there. (Why St. Louis, anyway? Is that your spiritual home?)
Franji: Yeah, I take so many different horse pills now that I've gotten where I can swallow 6 or more at a time. (Quite impressed a guy at work with this today.:D) Thanks on the diet. (Yours has been looking pretty toothsome lately too. Spinach and pumpkin risotto? I might need to learn how to make that one!)
Craig: I've been taking all that stuff for a while, (all except the high-dose calcium - that is a recent development.) I just never posted them much. I am waiting eagerly for the magical body recompositioning effects of high-dose fish oils to kick in (along with the calcium-mediated lipolysis.) (They have been helping a good bit.)
*loftily ignores totally uncalled-for Duke-related taunts*
pup: :p
MonStar: I usually feel crap-a-licious during and immediately after the refeed (bloated, thirsty, and really sleepy); I was fine the next morning, though. I looked full, but not really bloated or soft, and I felt great. (This is the first one where I've really limited the fat and protein though, so maybe that's why the other ones sucked so bad the next day.)
Here's today's Good Eats.
M1 12:45 pm: 1/2 cup cottage cheese.
M2 6:15 am: 1 cup oats, 1/2 cup skim milk, 1/2 cup cottage cheese, 1 cup green tea
M2.5 9:30 am: 1 apple
M3 11:30 am: 1 cup skim milk, 3 oz turkey, 1 cup broccoli
M4 2:00 pm: 1 cup cottage cheese
M5 5:00 pm: 1 cup flank steak with an orange bell pepper and a green bell pepper, stirfried with olive oil. Mmmmm.
M6 8:30-9:30 pm: pre/post workout shake (same amount as usual, more diluted, and ingested over the course of the workout)
M7 10:00 pm: 1 cup cottage cheese, 1/2 scoop nighttime blend
Tons o' vitamins and 20 g fish oil caps

Callahan::evillaugh: For a cut of the winnings I could suggest a few little tricks for you to try on ElP as well! I'm actually eagerly awaiting the next stage in the 'diet nazi' thing. I'm becoming a nutrition geek! (Hanging out on the AL forums will do that to you...)
Bradley: yeah, I love me some stirfry. (Those pepper strips are the best though - they always overcook them in restaurants and they get all squishy. Yuck. I like them still a little crunchy.)
OK, here's today. Chest and tris.
Flat DB press
1x8, 35's
1x4, 40's
1x6, 35's
(1x10 pushups)
Flat flyes
1x5, 35's
(1x10 pushups)
1x6, 30's
BB pullovers
1x6, 55
1x8, 50
(1x15 pushups)
Dips
1x6, bw (actually, 5 1/2 - coudn't quite lock out on the last one)
1x6, bw
1x6, bw (next to last one was shaky, last one couldn't lock out; so really 1x4+2 cheat)
When I can do 3 sets of 8 (and lock them all out!) I'm going to start weighting them. (LOL, I bet I'll look kind of gay. It'll be this big production: getting the dip belt out, hooking it up, adding the chain, and putting on....5 lbs. :D)
Reverse grip pushdowns
1x10, 60
1x10, 70
These are hard on the wrists. But I need that long head of the tris to come in a little more in order to get that horseshoe. (See below.)
Rope pushdowns
1x10, 70
1x10, 60
Yeah. The horseshoe. I'm going to have a horseshoe. I will not be denied.
I can never think of any really good, interesting exercises for chest. I mean, there's presses and there's flyes. You can do 'em as many fancy ways as you want, but it's all really just...presses and flyes. (Crossovers? Flyes. Pec deck? Flyes. Incline press? Presses. Duh.) So I threw in a few sets of pushups to alleviate my ennui. (And any suggestions for good, new chest stuff would be welcomed with open arms.)
I had to go pick up my training partner at the airport tonight, and by the time we got out of the incredibly complex labyrinth that is the airport parking deck, I was STARVING. RAVENOUS, even. And Greg's birthday was last week and we hadn't celebrated it yet, so I took him out to dinner. And we had cake. (Bailey's Irish Cream Torte, actually. :D) So diet was not up to nazi standards today. I'm too sleepy to post it all now and I haven't even put it in Fitday yet, so all you ardent fans of my diet will just have to contain yourselves another day. ;)
Wait, what's that I hear? My bed...it's calling my name.
Night!

5 pounds is 5 pounds. :) That's more weight than 90% of the assfaces probably use.
Nice DB presses.

Nice DB presses.
 I agree. Having that belt and chain makes dips much more fun no matter if there is five or a forty five hanging at the end of it:) Nice work on the dumbell presses.

yo girl- try the extra wide grip benching. the next day ull know that u chest was worked.
Yay for weighted dips
...disclaimer: check and make sure the belt isn't dry-rotted, breaking a dip belt is a painful experience ;)

Belial: Thanks. That makes me feel better. (And you're right - assfaces don't even DO dips.)
Bradley: I have to admit, I will feel just a little bit like a badass the first time I buckle on the dip belt!
BrickWall: Next time my training partner is actually at the gym with me on chest day, I will definitely try it. Do you think DB presses held extra wide would have the same effect or not?
Pup: yeah, that 5 lb plate would probably crush my toes completely! (Now a 45, THAT would be a different story....)
I missed a workout this last weekend, so I combined my usual upper back/shoulders and dead/PC/ham workouts into one. (I know, I know, it's a lot of volume.)
Pullups
1x9.5 (close parallel grip, 55 lb assist)
1x4 (close overhand grip, 55 lb assist)
First set actually felt pretty strong - didn't really struggle too much until the last 2 or 3 reps. That's pleasing.
Sumo deads
1x6, 135 warmup
1x4, 185
1x3, 225 (+2 reps!)
Lockout was a little shaky on that last one.
Back to
Pullups
1x8 (wide grip, overhand, 70 lb assist)
because I must make this exercise my bitch. (And also because it's right by the water fountain.)
T-bar rows
1x10, 70
1x8, 75
70 was the most I've done before this. I could probably do another good 10 or 15 lbs right now, but I'm not sure I could lift it off.
Standing BB military presses
1x10, 50 (behind the neck)
1x5, 60 (in front)
1x6, 50 (in front)
DB upright rows
2x8, 25 lb DB's
Hey! I like these much better than the BB ones. They don't feel as awkward in the forearms/wrists.
Glute-ham raises on the floor
1x5 negs (with about 1/2 of a positive on each one)
1x3, ditto (but a little less tight - I was tired by now.)
Bunch of ab stuff (leg raises, swiss ball crunches, etc)
I'll post my food later. I feel fat. I'm going to drop down to a little below 2K again for at least a week or two (but keep the refeeds).
Ass must get smaller. Ass has to get smaller.

M1: 9:00 am: 1 cup oats (that's 1 cup cooked, btw; 1/2 cup dry. It always is.), 1 cup green tea
I got busy working on a paper and forgot to make my eggs.
Also forgot to notice that it was time for M2.
M2:1:00 pm: 1.5 cup zucchini, mushroom, onion; 1 chicken breast
M3:6:00 pm: PWO shake
M4:8:00 pm: 1 chicken breast, 1/2 cup cottage cheese, 2 cups steamed cabbage
M5:soon: slow-release protein shake, 1 tsp flax
Plus 20 g fish oil and the usual array of vitamins and stuff.

I guess that'll do.
Can y'all tell I'm tired?

Sprints first thing in the morning will definetely wake you up:) That must be one hell of a paper. How long have been working on it?
:hello: Hi Carolinagirl. Those sprints can do a body good, they make me feel great (when I do them).

Um, yeah. Sprints. Well, it was raining this morning. (AGAIN. ) So I slept in. (Till 9:00, HY! Boo-yah!)
Bradley, I'm working on 2 research projects right now that will last all semester (each should be at least 20-25 pages; they're supposed to be AIMED at publication, but I think only one of them has a real shot at it. We'll see though - that sure would be a nice bonus on my applications, huh?)
CoCoa: hey sugar! They do indeed - when I do them! :D Sounds like we should nag each other about it. (I think I actually need somebody to come to my house and force me to go do them at gunpoint...I don't know that gentle internet reminders would do the trick if it's rainy, cold, and early!)
You didn't sprint because it was raining!?!?!?!?!!!????? You wus! Running in the rain is one of the coolest things ever.
Good luck with writing. It's become the bane of my existence.

Since you didn't do sprints you should do 100yard frog jumps. My legs have never been as sore as they have when we did that twice one day in track. You should frog jumps down the football field and walking lunges back.

Frog jumps are pretty much what they sound like. You are in the bottom part of the ATF squat position and you push up and out so that you jump forward. Pretty much double leg hops from bottom position. Totally fun. Better than sprints. I promise. *crosses fingers* :evillaugh

HY: hmm. Frog jumps. I'll think about it. (That's sort of like the parental "we'll see" when you were little; what it really meant was "hell no, but I don't want you to kick up a fuss in the middle of the grocery store and embarrass me".) Yeah. We'll see about those frog jumps. ;)
Belial: You would not only die, you would shrivel up and blow away. Anything under 2000 actually leaves me a little...how should I say...unfulfilled. I'm pretty hungry. But my ass is also pretty fat.
And you know I'm always up for deadlifts. Just say the word.
Here was today's food. (I went out for lunch because my cousin was in town for the day, so it's not textbook. And I only ate 4 meals.) (And...I'm hungry. :( )
M1:9:30 am: 1 cup oats, 5 whites/1 whole egg, green tea
M2:1:30 pm: 15 tortilla chips with salsa, taco salad with 1/2 cup chicken, 3/4 cup pinto beans, 1/4 cup guacamole, 1/4 cup cheese, 1/4 cup black olives, 1 cup lettuce, 1/4 cup tomatoes. (I didn't eat the shell. )
M3:4:30 pm: 7 whites/1 yolk scrambled with 1.5 oz turkey, 1/4 cup mushrooms, 1/4 cup spinach, 1/4 cup salsa, green tea

Very nice lifts by the way.
carolinagirl
03-22-2003, 08:25 PM
Bradley: did I say there was anything wrong with it? I was simply making an observation. I've dated many a redneck in my day (and enjoyed every minute of it). I even have a mini-monster truck of my own, but I don't drive it much. It's an '84 GMC 6.2 liter diesel 4WD Jimmy (the full-size one; exactly like the Bronco K series but with GMC on the grill instead.) It's a bad mammajamma. Also, I own 3 guns of my very own, one of which was a Christmas present from a (redneck) ex-boyfriend. Now, you don't get much more red than that! ;)
I'm not scheduling the refeeds because, well, rednecks don't do that. Actually, I don't know what my bf% is, so I don't even know how often I should schedule them, so I'm just doing it instinctively. (Seems to be every 3-4 days recently, though.)
Rookie: Welcome! Yes, Canada is a good long haul from NC, but it might be worth the trip - Belial deadlifting is a very pretty sight!! (Thanks about the lifts, btw! It's always nice to hear that, because I feel like they are pretty weak.)
Pup:
*eats Spam*
*is immediately sorry*
Today, chest and tris. Solid workout, nothing super-spectacular, but everything felt good. Real good, in fact.
Flat bench
1x15, bar, warmup
1x6, 105
1x2, 120
New PR by 5 lbs and 1 rep. The chest is definitely getting stronger. (I think maybe my boobs were holding me back. Whew, glad they're gone.) (That wasn't very convincing, was it?)
Flat flyes
1x5, 35
1x8, 30
Definitely stronger on these as well - form was tighter, and I could go wider with the 35's (and still come back!)
Pushups
1x12, bw.
(I get so bored on chest day, and these are really hard if I superset them immediately after flyes. So, of course, I do. :D)
Dips
1x6, bw, narrow grips
1x8 (+2!), bw, wide grips
1x4.5, bw, narrow grips
1x6, bw, wide grips
The wide ones are easier than the narrow ones (clearly). Am I correct in thinking that the wider grips emphasize chest and the narrow ones are mainly tris? (A couple more weeks and I should be nailing 3x8 solid ones. Then it's time to start adding weight. Sweet.)
Decline skulls superset with close grip bench
1x3/10, 50 (+5 lbs)
1x4/14, 45
Felt pretty strong on the set with the 50 - and that was after all those dips. (A month ago, which is the last time I did them, I did 45 for 4 FIRST in the tri workout, and it was hard as hell.)
One-arm pushdowns
1x5, 40 (each arm)
1x7, 35 (each arm)
Decline ab stuff
Lots of it: um, 1x15, 1x20 with 20 lbs, 1x10 oblique stuff with 15 lbs, 1x10 serratus stuff with 10 lbs, some other stuff that I don't remember.
Today was another one of those too-fried-to-pull-tight-spandex-sportsbra-over-the-head days. (I love those days! :D)
Now I'm going to go and get all prettied up and go to a party. I think I am, at least... I only had 5 hrs sleep last night (tuttut), and I have to work at 7 tomorrow morning, so I may wuss out. My couch is feeling pretty damn good right now.

Rezza: Thanks. I need all the encouragement I can get. Did I mention that I HATE CUTTING?
Today was legs. Pretty good. I even got real mad after my next-to-last set of squats and cussed and kicked some stuff (just a little though). (I think it was a little teeny girly test spike! :D)
Walking BB lunges (reps are for each leg)
1x8, bar only, warmup
1x8, 95
1x8, 115
1x5, 135
1x3, 145
Trying to preexhaust my fanny so the squats would be purely quads.
Front squats
1x6, 115
2x3, 135 ( + 10 lbs)
1x6, 95
The bar rests right on the points of my collarbone and hurts like a mother****er. That was what caused the aforementioned mini-tantrum - I was maddened by pain but my quads weren't fully fried, and I wanted to do more reps/weight, but I really didn't think my collarbones could take it. (On a positive note, my wrists are feeling much better in the clean grip.)
Sissy squats
2x8, bw
This pretty much took care of any additional quad frying, but just in case, I did
Hack squats
1x6, sled + 20
1x6, sled + 40
(You can laugh if you want to, but the sled on this beast is ****ing HEAVY.) First time I've ever even added weight to this.
Extensions (plate loaded)
1x9, 40
1x5, 60
Kind of wussy. I was pretty much done with the quads by now.
Standing DB calf raises (on the single leg ones the reps are per side)
single leg: 1x10, one 40 lb DB, feet neutral
both legs: 1x12, two 40 lb DB's, toes turned in
1x12, two 40 lb DB's, toes turned out
1x10, two 40 lb DB's, feet neutral
single leg: 1x5, two 40 lb DB's!!, feet neutral
Wow. Those were hard. :D
Haven't done my food yet. I'll post again in a minute.

B, yeah - I think there's something wrong too. Maybe I am positioning the bar wrong, or maybe my front delts aren't big enough to make a good solid rack for it (no jokes!!) - or maybe I need to wear a big thick sweatshirt during these for a little extra padding.
And I won't forget. ;)
Here was today's food. It was really kind of sucky, because I was late for everything, all day long, and didn't really have time for anything but grabbable stuff. Grrrr.
M1: 10:30 am: 1 cup cottage cheese, 1 apple, green tea
M2: 1:00 pm: 3 oz turkey, 1 cup steamed broccoli, 1 tsp hummus, 1 carrot stick
M3: 3:00 pm: 6 oz broiled salmon, 3 cups raw spinach leaves, 2 tbs olive oil

(You can laugh if you want to, but the sled on this beast is ****ing HEAVY.) First time I've ever even added weight to this.
I know what you mean. The one at the gym where I work out has to be at least 20 years old and the sled weighs a lot. Not to mention the fact that it rolls about as well as a shopping cart on a gravel road:(
Nice workout and congrats on the PB's. Diet looks good as usual:)

Your diet may have been late.....but still it is very good. I love the variety of foods you eat. I love alot of foods (especially vegetables) and I think I miss more than anything right now all the different vegetables I use to eat. Broccoli and green beans can get old quick LOL. :)
As always, I'm very impressed with your work ethic.

Narc, not to hijack cgirl's journal (she'll probably beat me... ), but why are you taking out the hot sauce? I understand dairy for cutting purposes, but why hot sauce? You're obviously not dropping carbs, so...
Granted, I don't use hot sauce, so maybe there's something I don't know, but I'd think it would be almost helpful for a slight thermogenic.
Cgirl: What's up!? ;) Nice workouts while cutting! I hear you on the front squats. There's something that I'm just not doing right. As we spoke of before, I have to use a cross grip, but something's not working.

Borris: If you hijacked my journal for anyone but Narc I would, indeed, beat you. (And I know that you would love it, too.) But Narc is one of my favorite topics of conversation too. ;) So, have at it.
Workhorse: Well, I missed you this weekend! Did you have fun?
Craig: Hopefully this week on the pics. My training partner is such a slackass. You can't have any of the other low-carb green veggies? I would have thought you could have spinach, collards, and cabbage. (You know you've been eating clean and dieting for a really long time when what you crave for a cheat meal is veggies and oatmeal! :D)
Bradley: our hack squat machines must be twins separated at birth.
BrickWall: awwwww. That's so sweet! I love the idea that you will be thinking of me every time you go through the excruciating agony of a drop set! ;)
Narc: No. I'm going to have to disagree with you on this one - I'll complain your ass off. (I do have a natural advantage, though. I'm a woman. ) :D

Looks like the perverts have left the building. I guess it's safe for me to post my workout now! :D
Today was upper back, traps, and shoulders. Pretty good workout. Also it was a refeed day. Also pretty good. And I finally have some progress pics. They're on my computer but I don't have the foggiest idea how to get them from there to here. So if anybody reads this, let me know, will you?
Pullups
1x5, parallel grip, 40 lbs assist (- 10 lbs assist!)
1x3, medium OH grip, 40 lbs assist (- 10 lbs assist!)
1x3, wide OH grip, 55 lbs assist
Hey. It's progress. :D
Bent BB rows
1x8, 80, OH grip
1x9, 90, OH grip
1x4, 100! , OH grip
!!! Hard to get full ROM on the last one. 100 is actually pretty heavy.
Cable rows
2x8, 90
DB military press, supersetted with DB upright rows
1x8/6, 30's (last 2 on the militaries needed a little nudging from Greg) Still, 30 is the highest I've been on these. That's enjoyable.
1x8/8, 25's
Lateral raises (superset straight arm/90 degree bent arm)
2x4/4, 15's
Aargh. I wish there was a 17.5.
Shrugs
2x8, 25's
Rear delt raises
1x8, 30's
1x12, 25's
Ab stuff
3 sets hanging leg raises (bw), 2 sets rope crunches (with 70 and 90 lbs)
Yep. Not bad. The diet, however, looks rotten, but that's just the refeed talking. It was really pretty ok. It was a 6 hr refeed like usual - the animals woke me up at 6:00 am and I couldn't get back to sleep, so I ate a bunch of sugary cereal (the milk was spoiled, so I had to eat it dry. Rats.) and went back to bed, then finished it off from 10:00 to 12:30. All the fats and stuff were consumed after 3:00 pm.
M1, 6:00 am 4 cups cocoa pebbles, dry; 8 rolls smarties (and it was pretty ****ing gross at 6 am, let me tell ya.)
M2, 11:00 am 4 cups fruity pebbles, dry; 8 rolls smarties
M3, 3:00 pm 1/2 cup dry oats, 1.5 scoops whey (tapering into lower GI carbs here)
M4, 6:30 pm 6 oz. flank steak, green pepper and mushrooms stirfried with 1 tsp olive oil
M5, 9:00 pm PWO shake
M6, 12:30 pm 2 cup cottage cheese, 2 cups frozen grapes (the grapes weren't ideal but they were there and I was hungry.)
Plus 20 g fish oil. (Had to buy a stopgap bottle from the store. Who is Kilosports' shipper, anyway? They are slow.)
Breakdowns:
3528 total cals
74 g fat (15 sat, 12 poly, 13 mono + 20 g fish oil)
535 g carbs!!!
188 g protein
19% fat/ 60% carbs/ 21% protein
Refeeds are not nearly as fun as cheat meals. While it is satisfying to know that you are still being disciplined, it sucks to eat only sugary cereals and dextrose. Fat and carbs are just so tasty in combination.... *sigh*
OK, somebody tell me how to post my darn pictures!!! (That red was in case you were just skimming.)

On the real: After re-evaluating your pics, here's what I have to say:
Looking very good. The back pic does look a little washed out. That, combined with your pose, is making your back look a touch weaker than it is (it still looks excellent!). Try lifting your elbows to be a touch higher than your shoulders on your back double bi. It should spread you scapula a little more and show off some width.
The quad seperation looks great! That only get better more sprints. :D

Narcissus: Hmm. Thank you for the first half. I think I'll just let the second half go right on over my head.
Rezza: Thanks! (Your journal is always sea-green when I'm visiting, you gorgeous thing!)
Craig: You said 'toned'. tuttut :D Thanks! (The first one isn't a very good picture, but the others were all hardcore muscle-y shots - although the ones that got up here don't look very muscle-y :( - so I wanted at least one regular one to balance it out.)
HY: You sweet thing! I do still have plenty of fat to lose, but thanks for saying that anyway! ;)
CoCoa: Aww, thanks.
Callahan: Yeah, good thing you thought better of it! Cracking on southerners. Humph. ;) Thanks for the kind words, Cal.

Pup: :D
Borris: Thanks again for messing with them. They're still too freakin' big though. How small does it want it - like avatar size??? (At least ONE person got to see that I actually do have a little muscle somewhere. Tell 'em, Borris! :( )
Tryska: Thanks! Greg is my training partner - he took them and sent them to me named after him instead of me. (He is about as cocky as Narc.) And I didn't know how to change the names. (I'm a child of the Atari generation, not the PC generation.) (Oh yeah...the stupid server has been ****ing with me, too. )
Workhorse: Thank you! You are such a sweetie.
ectx: Awww! You bring your sweet self right on up to Chapel Hill. Screw the fabulous career- advancing opportunity in St. Louis! ;)
Bradley: Thanks so much. It means a lot. (Wish I had some pics from my 'fat period' so y'all could compare.) (But if I did, I probably wouldn't have the balls to post them anyway!)
Powerman: Why ya cryin', big fella? Dude, I didn't think I looked that bad!
