View Full Version : When are the best times to take my protein?

YAY! I got my first tub of protein...I'm going to drink some now just to see what it's like but on a regular basis, when should I take it?

Like, before workout? After workout? How long before or after? What other times of the day?

I take mine about 30-45 minutes before working out and then right after. Other than that I try to eat my protein. If I've been slack with my diet and I didn't get a good night time meal then I'll have a shake before bed.

If taking postworkout I would mix it with water but at other times of the day I would mix it with milk.

Best time to drink your protein powder is in the morning, if itīs not casein based protein ?
And of course after your work out .;)

I got Optimum Nutrition 100% Whey.

It tastes good. And I'll be taking one right now, then (since it's an off day) and then before I sleep.

Thanks guys.

Whey protein is "best" post workout.

Every 2 hrs.

I take 2 scoops of Optimum 100% right after working out, and another 2 scoops sometime during the day... Doesn't really matter when. Sometimes, I'll also have another 2 scoop shake along with one of my meals.. I also usually mix a scoop of chocolate whey into my oatmeal in the morning. Also, before bedtime, you're better off eating something like cottage cheese, the protein in it will digest over a longer period than whey, and give you better results over the entire night

What difference does it make if it's with milk or water?

Also, should I be taking two scoops with each drink?

Milk will slow the digestion of the whey protein which is not ideal postworkout, but at other times during the day would be fine. Whey digests very rapidly, this is why it is recommended so highly postworkout.

As far as how many scoops, depends on how much protein you want.

Well you want to constantly give your body protein throughout the day and the shakes come in when food isn`t convenient at the moment. therefor the question when is a bit silly.

Whey since its so fast acting would probably come to its right best just after a workout

Well, I understand the reason for the water mixing post-workout but does using milk so it slowly digests benefit the BBer in any way?

It will provide the body with a more constant flow of aminos when whey is mixed with milk. When whey is just taken by itself with water it will be absorbed by the body very rapidly.

Wow....some of you guys REALLY need to think about how much protein your taking. Sure its good for body building right now, but after long periods of time your going to develop kidney stones like MAD! I just take one shake with 2 scoops and milk (40g protein) and a Gatorade or any sports drink except Powerade(is that the carbonated one?) right after. Of course, you could offset all that protein with LOTS of water. Probably 6 cups per shake you take each day....

Oh well, im only 17, maybe it different in adults? I would still watch out tho.

What you quote is a myth. Increased protien intake will not cause kidney stones in a normal adult given sufficient water intake. (More protien implies more water)
Oh at that recomendation 6 cups = 250mlx6 = 1.5l per shake you would sick not better.

I dont think you would get SICK, probably just constantly go to the bathroom :D

Wow some of you guys really need to educate your selfs on the physiological process of dietary protein digestion.

first I would like to point out a few things flawed in a few post.

1- adding milk to your whey will not slow down the enzymatic break down of peptide bonds of the whey. When you add milk to whey, the whey continues to break down in at the same rate as it normally would. All you have done is added a new protein for your system to work at.

2- The whole kidney stones thing..lol You have been watching too much T.V. Only in a Hypohydrated state would the pharma kinetics of protein ingestion lead to and over abundance of Urea.
But the fact is that we usually drink enough fluid to stay hydrated to flush our system out..so it never really poses a problem.

3- another thing over looked is the types of protein and the times of day when to ingest them..

Pre work out I would ingest a shake with the profile

%
-5 BCCA's
-5 Glutamine Peptide
-45 Milk Protein Isolate
-45 Whey protein Concentrate

-post work out (in grams)
-15 Glutamine peptide
-20 Maltodextrin
-35 Dextrose
-20 Egg Protein
-40 Ion-Exchange Whey Protein Isolate

and interval shakes-

%
-50 CrossFlow Micro-filtration Whey Protein
-30 Milk Protein Isolate
-20 Miscelar Casinate Protein

This would prolong the digestion of the whey though? Having caisen protein (from milk) mixed in with the whey would cause the whey to take longer to digest because the body now has to digest both types of protein which is the reason I said that it would slow the digestion.

. All you have done is added a new protein for your system to work at.

Which would in turn mean that it takes longer to digest, right?

No they will digest independantly of each other..Although there is milk present it does not slwo the process by which the whey is broken down..

So whey, when mixed with water, will be digested more rapidly than when mixed with milk (due to the absence of a slower digesting protein). This is what I said to begin with, although I may have worded it wrong:)

Always a good time for protein....Pre, post, morning, night.....I have a hard enough time just gettting all the protein I need in one day...I can't be picky. I would suggest food instead of a shake before bed....hell...I always suggest food instead of a shake....

Protein In general, but I dont think it would be bad to take whey at times other than Post workout, do you?

No I agree, just wondering really if you meant whey protein every 2 hours which I would disagree with. Whey is fine at other times throughout the day but a protein blend would be better at times other than postworkout.

No, it would not directly affect it, but it may slow gastric emptying. The issue with whey is not how quickly it's broken down, but how quickly it transits to the upper jejunum. Since bovine milk protein is approx. 80% casein, and casein forms a gel in the stomach, it's not a far leap to theorize that the milk would actually physically 'interfere'/slow the whey from making its way through the digestive tract. Further, casein differently stimulates gastrointestinal hormones (i.e., gastrin, CCK, secretin, and gastrin inhibitory peptide) which affect the process of digestion. Of course, casein may not have these effects. But, to my knowledge, no one has determined either way what occurs.
