I am just trying to decide if I should get rid of my gut, before I bulk again. Look at the pics and let me know what yah think. I am 5'9", 165, 31 waist, and aroun 12-14% bf. Gut is a bit bigger in real life, but yah get the idea. Thanks!

I hate to rain on your parade, but the body fat estimations on this site are getting a little bit ridiculous. Haven, you are not 12-14%. Period. I would say you are close to 20, if not more. I think you should cut down until you can at least see your abs somewhat, and then start to think about a bulk.

but what is he cutting down to?

Vido

True, but if he bulks he will inevitably gain more fat, in addition to the muscle he is hoping for. He's going to want to cut eventually and the more fat you have on you when you begin to cut, the more you have your work cut out for you in terms of retaining as much muscle as possible.

You are nowhere close to 12-14 % bf. More like 18%. Since you're a beginner, if you eat clean you could probably loss some fat while putting on muscle.

Bulk.

Clean Bulk, def, But I think that he is around the 15 mark, maybe 18. I used to be 13 done by an electronic device that a personal trainer, and he looks a bit bigger than that.

It all depends on how you feel. People here are quick to say "bulk," but I bet if they felt fat in any way they'd be cutting. If you feel fat, cut for a while. It's not worth it to gain a little muscle and start feeling terrible about yourself due to the fat gain.

I think you should cut until your abs are more visible, then go on a mad clean bulk.

Gain some mass before u start talking about cutting.

Thats a tough one, your in the middle of the road imo, either could be done.

What is your experience with weights? if you are just starting out then i suggest going on a slow bulk and familiarize yourself with the demands of weight training and see some muscular improvement, ive seen guys like you start out by cutting and losing most of their muscle, thus throwing in the towel when they dont have any size.

So i would say bulk* then cut (*slow bulk) , although it is entirely your decision.

logically : bulk first, then cut, it looks like you have neither enough muscle mass nor lacking it

Deppends on what your looking for. If you are happy with your current size, cut. If not, bulk. I am so skinny that you look big to me, but if you want more mass, go for it!

Again, I'm just a psycho, but you need to cut. In my opinion, you should be showing definition on whatever muscles you have and then slowly bulk up. You're not big, but you're kinda soft looking, so cutting looks to be needed first.

*sigh*

first off, to bulk or cut is all determined by what your goals are. People can't say bulk or cut because they don't know what you want.

if you want to get big, then bulk. If abs and definition are important to you, then cut. If you want to get as big as possible, then bulk. You can go from 165 @ 18% and go to 200 @ 25% and still have a successful bulk, but it all depends on what is important to you.

Well if you don't have the muscle mass to begin with, cutting may not be an option. But maybe you would like to get your body fat in control before you bulk. So maybe you can do like a small cut phase to lower the bf a little, then start a bulk. Or you can go straight with a bulk from where you are. It's all up to you.

I wish that there were a site that showed us what different bf%s looked like. I really have to disagree with Vido, 20% bf boarders on unhealthy and Haven would look a lot worse at 20%. My guess is 16% - 18% tops.

I agree with who ever said "Cut to what?" You need more muscle before you cut. Ultra clean bulk is my suggestion.

Well my weight is actully at 161.5 now, scales around here are crap. I have been lifting for 2 years, since I turned 18. I think that I have the muscle, but ya'll seem to think I don't. I seem to put up a decent amount of weight, while maintaing good form. Bench is at 215- for 3 reps, so I don't know if that is enough time or I am still new. I really don't care about my apperance right now, I know what ever fat I do put on, I will just cut down anyway. I am not niave in thinking it won't be hard to cut more fat, I think that is commen sence. How can you tell that my BF% is so high, I used one of those sights to calculate it and it gave me 13-15% everytime?

My opinion, add it to the others for what it is worth. I would you should cut until you see top abs. Then go for a clean bulk. If you start bulking now and training hard, your gonna have that much more to cut. Your BF looks way higher than 13% and you look pretty soft for being able to push a 215 bench. So I say get cut up and you'll look aces!
