When's the best time to drink protein shakes, during the day? I have three a day, which I hear is ideal? Also, is it true that taking protein shakes is potentially harmful to your kidneys?

I would drink one postworkout along with some simple carbs and then if you need more protein in your diet you can drink some more shakes throughout the day, There is no set amount of shakes that you should drink each day. Just use them to supplement your diet with protein.

A higher protein diet will not hurt your kidneys unless you have some pre-existing medical condition.

Pretty much agree. Whey is good after a wo cause it absorbs faster then other protein. Other than that think of the protein shake as a chicken breast. Its just a replacement for a meal. In my opinion 3 a day is a bit much. Unless you have trouble fitting in meals.

I always drink one shake a day, but only 30 minutes before lifting, or 30 minutes after lifting.

Here is a link to an article at AST-SS.com that gives a good explanation of taking advantage of the 'anabolic window', the supplements they recommend are AST products (of course), but you can replace those supplements with equivalent supplements from other companies.
