He won the WBF shows and was formerly a competitive (top 5) Olympia contender.

He weighed in at a reported 263 in that shot. He was just over 6' tall. Some of you may remember when Vince McMahon took a foray into bodybuilding. He started the WBF (World Bodybuilding Federation). The idea was to make bodybuilding popular using much the same method as pro wrestling. It, like the XFL, went away very quickly. At the time, it was very exciting as Vince signed some of the top pros away from Weider.

Anyway, Gary looked incredible in that show and would have definitely given Haney a run for his money if he had competed in the Olympia that year.

the WBF swiped a decent amount of big names from the IFBB. Baker, Morant, Quinn to name a few..............

An extract from
http://www.virtualmuscle.com/enter_the_fortress_Oct2000.htm

Remember when 1983 Mr. Olympia / all-round goofball Samir Bannout challenged Gary Strydom, WBF champion, to an impromptu running race out back of Gold’s? It was hilarious! The muscle-bound bozos gave it a whirl and both buckled in agony from pulled hamstring muscles. The photos were gut-busters.

How about the time Mike “Hothead” Quinn threatened to rip Strydom’s hairpiece off on stage

LOL

Chris, see if you can find a few decent back pics of Strydom on the net,Iv'e had a quick look but I cant find one pic from the rear,I assume he tried not to be photographed in back poses as much as possible, with it being a notoriously weak bodypart, when compared to his peers at the time.

did he a big personality? as vince likes his characters?

Strydom's back was a weakpoint, but it came up quite a bit for that show. His chest, delts, legs, and triceps were so awesome that it pretty much didn't matter when he achieved that condition.

so is he one of ur heros of the 80s Chris ?

By "ours" do you mean mine? What exactly do you mean you saw him looking a bit faggy?

smiling makes you gay now?

Shocker

yes

I suppose the last picture could be construed as gay, but then again, so can having an avatar like yours. You see, many psychologists might say that presenting a picture of a beautiful woman dancing as a representation of yourself is an overcompensation, a way of making an inherent lack of confidence in one's own masculinity.

is that what they might say.
my bull**** detector is going crazy.

Yes, that is certainly what they might say...

If you like, I can expound further.

well if you want the real answer - i like looking at girls.
it doesn't take a degree to figure that out.

To me, it really doesn't matter what your sexual preference is. My comments were targeted at your homophobic comments concerning Gary Strydom, and your sarcastic comments about my "heroes" of the 80s. Both were uncalled for and stupid.

Shocker
04-19-2003, 09:40 AM
i am tired of arguing.
maybe you shouldn't take it so literally.

anyway, you were the one that started insinuating that i was gay if you want to go read a few posts back.

I'll change my avatar for you.

You want to reconsider your statement about me starting things?

Shocker

i dont understand m8, i dont even know you.
i was talking about Gary being gay, not you.
so i dont think that i want to reconsider unless Gary wants to take it up with me.

i was half serious about him being a hero for you.
as you are older than most here i thought you might've grown up reading about him in the 80s.
i just checked out a few websites after you posted this to see a few more pictures of him and found these sad looking ones that i thought were funny.

In conclusion:
* Many psychologists and scientists might agree with me that you need to relax.
* In a recent survey, it was discovered that a staggering 50% of what you have had to say could've been avoided.
* In fact over 42% of all readers agree that this thread

Umm...to get back on topic, isn't he a well-to-do businessman today? The last I heard of him, he was competing at a Night of Champions some years back and finished 12th if I recall correctly. I think it was the 1997 NOC.

I'd be happy to pose for a picuture looking gayer than Richard Simmons wearing a pink tutu if they were paying me enough.

What ever happened to him?
He looked pretty good, right in line with the top level pro's IMO.

I really don't know. I think that signing with the WBF really blacklisted him as far as Weider and the IFBB were concerned. I would be curious as to where he is now.
