View Full Version : What a 20" arm really looks like...

So many people claim at or near 20" arms, so few really have them. Now, a 250lbs + (ripped) of today is very believable, but not many of the wannabes and the bodybuilders of the 70s etc.

Below is a picture of Eddie Robinson, a bodybuilder known for his arms, being measured in the off-season with a bit of a pump. He is just over 20" at this point.

This is Ray Mentzer (the late) fully bulked (at around 250-260). I believe he was in the 5'9-10" range.

This is a non-related picture. As I was looking for the first two pictures I came across this of Tom Platz and I was just so darn impressed I had to post it.

Robinsons actual bicep was huge, lol. It seems to make up 2/3 of the arm, instead of the tricep. This kid I used to work with had 20's...he was about 270 and 5'8, pretty soft tho. I remember an xxl polo-style shirt ripping when he flexed in it.

Both those pics demonstrated the meaning of the triceps in the size of the arms, alright robo's bi's are massive but his tri's are nothing to sniff at!

Platz's legs are the best there ever was and ever will be!!! I think it must have been those 20 mile bike rides post workout ;)

Mentzer's triceps made up a lot of those 20".... they're awesome!

superb pics Chris !!! Mike Mentzer was 5.8'' I guess his brother had ~ the same height.

Jones measured Mike arms at a little bit over 18''

Right Gavan, but that was in shape. His arms would have measured more carrying a bit more fat. His brother did get bigger than Mike ever was (to my knowledge) at that point. That tricep is so darn huge, it just hangs...

I visited this whole section tonight (Members Pics) for one reason, and one reason ONLY : to see if Mason had gotten around to posting more bad*ss retro-70's armshots.

Chris, you seem to have a whole lot of interesting books, and some of em seem to deal with Jones and Nautilus equipment. Can you recommend any favourites?

Secondly, what exactly happened to Mike and Ray (RIP)? They both passed, almost simultaneously?! And there was speculation, but seemed to me, people didn't want to talk about it too much.

I was actually more impressed with their forearm size than arm size. Those forearms are amazing.

That leg shot  just left me speechless though.

I really don't know, I have read different things, they both had some pretty serious health problems, but beyond that it would be pure speculation.

As for the Nautilus books, if you can find the Nautilus Bodybuilding Book anywhere that is probably the best one for overview etc.

Not to break your heart pup, but I think platz is the only person in the world with good enough genetics to get legs like that;)

Mason, what are you arms? 19?

Platz was damn impressive. Dude could do a split after a heavy set of squats. He did something like 300 kg's for 10-12 reps.

What happened to him?

I measured my right arm, cold (at a right angle to the bone), at 18.4" recently.

why is it that mine measure 17" but don't look like they're 93% as good as yours? :)

It's just not fair.

Callahan maybe you should curl a little bit heavier, look at Mike doing curl :

Because the 1.4" difference in arm measurement equates to a much greater difference in total volume of the muscle. The bigger the arm, the bigger the actual difference in total volume for every 1" of size.

You asked.:D

I knew, actually.

But I just wanted to whine about it. :)

taking it a step further, if you figure the surface area of a cross section of the arm as roughly circular... your arm has a rough radius of 2.93" and mine is 2.70"; this translates into a rough cross sectional area of 26.94sq in and 23.00 sq in, respectively. My 23" area is about 85% of your nearly 27" area. A bit more accurate-feeling than 93%... of course a BETTER method would be to allow for muscle volume and length and all that but I lack the math skills for that.... Grade 8 geometry is about as fancy as I care to get. :)
