Fat, protein, or carbs don't make you gain fat. It all comes down to calories.

some people do say it all leads down to calories. but i also think that if someone ate 1000 calories of dextrose right before they go to bed in place of 1000 calories worth of cottage cheese, there would be a difference in fat gain between the 2 people

That's true. It also depends on the person's metabolism, genetics, etc.

The thermic affect of food would be one factor that would have to be considered.

Although when overfeeding it would make a difference. For example if you overfed on carbs and fat then the carbs would be used for energy and the fat would be stored as fat.

Just one data point for you..
I recently gone through a bulking cycle. My weight went up about 10 lbs and my waist went up two inches. I had a pretty clean bulking diet.
You gained 8lbs and your waist went up 1 1/2". You did better than me... :-) So, don't feel too bad.

part of genetics i gues :( some people tend to store fat easier then others. also, the places can vary. but dont worry bro, thats what cutting is for :D

also frank, did you recently jump from a cutting diet to a bulking diet?
I think the key is... how fast did you gain the 8 pounds? If it was over like 2-4 weeks, you simply gained too fast. If it was over 8-16 weeks... I dont know what to tell you
