Ok, this is kind of a stupid question, so you'll have to excuse my ignorance. My girlfriend just got booted off of her family's insurance plan. She is now trying to do research to see what to get but she is totally lost. I wish I could help her but I have no experience in this. Do you guys have any suggestions or guidance to give me so I can relay it to her? Thanx in advance

Is she getting it through her job, or does she want to get it on her own? Getting health insurance by yourself is crazy expensive...

She's a sales rep at Wet Seal PT. They aren't offering insurance. The problem is she just graduated from school and can't find a FT job yet

Graduated from high school or college? Most colleges can offer some kind of health insurance to alumni's until they can receive some from their jobs. If she's just graduating from high school then maybe its time to look at getting some loans and looking into college.

I understand that and she's looking for a job so she can use her psychology degree, that was just a part time job while she was in school. I mean she's been looking but the market isn't exactly full of opportunities at the moment. I mean she just graduated yesterday!

She already checked out what her school has to offer but it doesn't cover dental or the female dr.

well she's either gonna have to self-pay, or find a job with bennies soon.

there are soem individual health palns but they are oftentimes more expensive then jsut self-paying.

I have gone almost 10 months with out insurance. My postition was eliminated, I couldn't afford Cobra. So I said Fuc it. Its risky, but I am also young. Shes gonna probably pay a few hundred a month, 200 at the least.
I've been nervous about getting into major accident costing thousands.
One thing to look into is insurance with an extremely high deductible, maybe $5K or so. It might be a little more affordable. The money you pay on insurance can pay for alot of doctors vistits and scripts, but she would still have coverage for the big ****.

Luckily I got a job last week and insurance will start my first day.

Thanx for the advice Berserker with what to look for. Good luck with your new job too. You're lucky, at my last job I had to wait 6 months for my insurance to kick in.

The only problem is she needs to go to the doctor now for something, that's what sparked all this.

congrats on getting a job berserker.

that was my thing too when i got laid off last year...for the number of times i actually had to go tot he doctor over the summer, COBRA was way too expensive.

irish - if she needs to go to the doctor, just have ehr pay for it. they will cut her a deal for not having insurance. last time i didn't have insurance and had to go to my endo it was 92 dollars. compared to 168 a month for cobra.

Shes probably just better off paying the for the vist and script. Guessing $100-200.

I was on Cobra when I changed jobs last time around $1500+ for 90 days. My new employer paid for it. I also choose more options then I would have myself. They should have just put me under there insurance I didn't use it anyway.
