i have a friend who absolutley idolizes mozart and think nothing was ever in the same universe as him. I myself am more partial to Stravinsky, and the occasional Wagner. Totally check out the Firebird Suite & Rite of Spring, both by Stravinsky.
also, the william tell overture, by Mozart.

Beethovens 9th is amazing. I have to check out ride of the valkeries.

a valkerie is like an amazon, but in a different culture.

PS- Im going to see Beethoven performed by the Rotterdam Philharmic, lead by Valery Gergiev, this month :)

I`m not sure what parts by beethoven will be performed

valkeries were hot chicks that were supposed to pick up dead soldiers that the gods found 'worthy' of entering valhalla

they were also strong warriors

A few of my favorites (As is obvious, I pretty much only like dramatic stuff in minor keys):

Berlioz:
Symphonie Fantastique (4th movement, "March to the Scaffolds", in particular)

Mozart:
Symphony No. 25 in g-minor
Symphony No. 40 in g-minor
Piano Concerto No. 24 in c-minor
Requiem Mass (through the Lacrimosa)

Beethoven:
Sympony No. 5
Symphony No. 9
Piano Sonata No. 17 in d-minor
Piano Sonata No. 14 in c sharp minor ("Moonlight Sonata")
Piano Sonata No. 23 in f minor ("Appassionata")
String Quartet No.14 in c sharp minor

Chopin:
Nocturne No.19 in e-minor
Prelude No 4 in e-minor
Funeral March

Wagner:
(Really you should listen to these operas in their entirety, but since most people don't have nearly the patience, the overtures\excerpts are a good place to start)

Overture to Lohengrin
Overture to Rienzi
Overture to the Flying Dutchman
"Magic Fire Music"

:)

Wow! I was surprised to find this thread.... this isn't the sort of music I usually see discussed on these boards.....

Some of my favorites:

Water Music
Music for the Royal Fireworks, both by George Frederick Handel

Carmina Burana, by Carl Orff

The Sea Symphony, by Ralph Vaughn Williams

Suites Number 1 and 2 for Two Pianos, by Sergei Rachmaninoff

La Mer
Nocturnes for Orchestra
Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun, all by Claude Debussy

The Symphonies of Gustav Mahler

The Firebird, by Igor Stravinsky

Opera music by Richard Wagner has already been mentioned..... you should also get to know the opera music by Richard Strauss. Particularly his music from Der Rosenkavalier.

While we're on the subject of opera: anything by Giacomo Puccini and Giuseppe Verde.

Great opera singers:
Eileen Farrell
Leontyne Price
Renata Tebaldi
Thomas Hampson
Samuel Ramey
Hakan Hagegard

and the list could go on and on.........

Enjoy!

Rachmaninov's 3rd concerto for piano and orchestra...the best bar none (and according to legend the singularly most difficult piece to play for a pianist...ever!!)

After wanting to see ot live for a couple of years - I finally got round to it a couple of months ago at the Moscow conservatoire - absolutely mindblowing stuff!!

The film entitled "Shine" about the same piece of music is wonderful too (stars Geoffrey Pine if I remember correctly).

Good Picks RG...I guess you're not a total assface. :D j/k

Stravinsky's my favorite. I pretty much like all the old Rusky composers...Musorgsky, Rimsky Korsakov, Tcaikovsky, and Stravinsky. Outside of that I like Gershwin, Copeland, and Respighi with some Ravel and stuff interspersed. good stuff.

Vivaldi - 4 Seasons.

Also, Wagner - Ride of the Valkyries. (My personal favorite)

Respighi!

How could I have forgotten The Pines of Rome, Feste Romana, and The Fountains of Rome?

and then by Ravel: Bolero, and the Suite #2 from Daphnis and Chloë

More good stuff.

I like classical music but Fur Elise was the only one I've taken the time to learn on guitar. Classical stuff is awesome to play but tough.
