I'd bet the difference was more so the timing of the drink for the two groups. One group drank right after working out while the other waited 2 hours.
It's no secret that you want to take in something right after you lift as opposed to 2 hours later.

It has been proven many times that the addition of carbs and protein postworkout will benefit recovery/muscle growth.
