I'm sampling different protein bars right now, and I was wondering what are the most important things to look for in the nutrition facts. I am currently trying to pick those that have the most protein, least carbs, least sugar, and least fat, in that order. Is this correct? I recently heard something about your body not being able to utilize the protein if it doesnt have enough carbs to work with, so maybe I should go for high protein-moderate carb? And what about the fat content, its looking pretty high, especially with some saturated and probably some transfat in there too.

Is there any way I could make my own protein bars, with the proper macronutrient breakdown?

It's a trade off. Most of them seem to be hit-or-miss. Honestly, the fat content isn't something I worry about; the metrx protein plus bars have the least glycerine, so I usually eat those. Some of the low-carb ones are so loaded with the stuff; I'm not sure how much good that's doing me.

The carbs in the bars are (when they're there) usually simple sugars or high GI carbs; I'd avoid them. The best would be a high-protein, low-carb, moderate fat bar, and maybe a few slices of whole-wheat bread or even lower GI carbs to accompany your "meal". In the end, go for taste.

Or better yet {Frankster mode}eat some tuna{/Frankster mode}

Any protein bar that is "good" for you will not taste good. They all cost too much. So like Belial said, "eat some tuna."

I've never seen anyone make their own protein bars. Tried making shakes? It's a lot cheaper than buying protein bars.

The best protein bar I've tried for taste and content has been the Nitro-tech bar. They are at work so can't remember exact stats. Think its 35g protein, 9g carb of which i believe 2 are sugar, and 7 grams of fat. I got double chocolate and it actually tastes good too. And it's priced the same as all the rest of the high protein bars.

have you tried designer protein bars? if not, TRY IT!!!!! they're fuking amazing.. granted the macro ratios are low ~20/pro3/carb/2fat~, but better something then nothing..

I definetly wouldn't make those "protein bars" staples in your diet...I mean if they taste like candy...the only one's that were prolly ok to eat were the Balance bar's(the had digestive enzymes which helped break them down) but since Hershey's bought them out who know's what's in them! Maybe in case of an emergency that you didn't have any "real food" available. Just my opinion.;)

whewn I'm really hard up for food, like between classes, I go to the local GNC and pick up either a metrx bar or a LaBrada Leanbody bar. The Lean Body bars have 16-19 grams of carbs, mostly sugar alcohols, but they taste decent.
