Hi all,

I've been meaning to do this for a while, so here it is - my very own journal. I'm hoping to get some good feedback. I really want to maximize my gains and I've been in a holding pattern for some time now.

Here's a little about me:
I'm 30, 6ft tall, 218lbs. I've been working out for about a year and a half. The last 4 or 5 months have been really disappointing as far as results. I was stuck at 210. I'm working my ass off at the gym, eating gobs of protein, and standard measures of creatine, glutamine, multi-vitamin, etc. I've recently started gulping down lots of weight gainer and have picked up 8 pounds.

As far as my overall progress, I feel really great about it. When I started a year and a half ago I weighed about 165-170. way skinny! Here is a picture of me from that time:

Here is another before pic- This is me and my wife. Sorry - there were absolutely positively without-a-doubt NO photographs of me allowed without a big baggy t-shirt. I was very self conscious at the time. I guess you'll just have to imagine the ribs poking through my chest...

Wow - who knew it was so hard to get a good looking picture of yourself... After about 20 tries, this is the best of what I have for my "now" picture.
I have to say I'm lookin' kinda fat, and my favorite vein thingy in my arm isn't showing :(

Be kind.

I'll post my last week's workouts so you have an idea of what I do...

I am just gonna post this before closeup so maybe you can compare the way the gold chain fits me now. I guess its a good measure of progress.

*edit* See a better example of after further down. I found the shirt I wore in the second pic. You can see the diff in how it fits.

Tefelhund's Typical Food Day
(since the quest for size began in earnest):

4:00am Wake up STARVING. Drink 400cal weight gainer, 55gWhey protein. Go back to bed.

7:00am Wake up again starving. Drink 600cal weight gainer, 55g whey protein, teaspoon glutamine. Take multivitamin, vitamin C and E, blood pressure med. Usually also eat a banana or apple or something

9:00am Stumble into work. Drink 2 cups of coffee. with tons of sugar.

9:30am Begin day long ritual of walking to water dispensor to desk to potty to water dispensor to desk to potty to...

10:30am Yep, more weight gainer(200cal) and 55g whey protein.

12:00pm Lunch. Usually a footlong extra meat Subway on wheat or all-you-can-eat Chinese buffet or some combination of Pasta, chicken, cheese, and red sauce. This is my big meal.

3:00pm Weight gainer(200cal) and 55g whey protein.

5:00pm Weight gainer(200cal) and 55g whey protein.

7:00pm get home from work. Drink WeightGainer(600cal) and 55g whey protein. multivitamin, C, and E. 1 asparin. go to gym.

10:00pm Post workout weight gainer and whey protein. creatine, glutamine. eat dinner. Usually grilled chicken or steak or fajita with salad or corn or something. Sometimes rice, too.

11:30pm Bedtime! 30g banana flavored casein protein, glutamine. ZMA.

Wow - I never realized how much chocolate flavored weight gainer and protein crap I drink. Up until somewhere near the end of last month, my diet looked similar except without most of the weight gainers in there. Wasn't gaining ANY weight with that. I chose the weight gainer because of the difficulty of getting real food.

heh, I'm sure I've given y'all plenty to pick on. :)

Let the Feedback Begin!

Nice Journal! :spam:

Looks like you've made some really good progress. You're lifting some heavy weight.

I'm not a diet expert, so I'll let some of the other guys give you advice on what you're eating. However, I have to say I agree that you take a LOT of protein. I really doubt you need that much.

Keep up the good work.

If you want a general question like that answered you're better off putting it in a general section of the board, not your jounal. People usually reserve their journals for posting their workouts, diets, etc. and getting feedback on those. There's many other areas of the boards other than journals. Check it out and explore.

:( Man - I spent 2 hours putting this info up last night... Doesn't anyone have anything? I was so sure I'd get a ton of feedback.

I guess I'll list some questions:

I am concerned that I am working out too much, but at the same time, I am desperate to go to the gym and play.

I have been stuck in a looong plateau. And the weight gainer above is my attempt to get out of it. Also just started a workout log (which I think was a MAJOR reason I was not progressing) Any further ideas to help break out of it?

Should I be working on gaining weight (I do want to be bigger, of course) or should I maybe diet down (I could stand to lose some fat)?

Let me know what y'all think.

Thanks guys

Teufelhund
08-07-2003, 09:59 PM
Thats the thing - I tend to just go to the gym and pick the bodypart that hurts the least and blast it. I usually end up at the gym 5 days a week. There's nothin' but reality crap on TV anyway. :)

I make sure to do legs at least 1/week. Up to this point I have had no structure to my training program at all. I think this journal and the insight from others it will hopefully bring will help me build a more solid program.

Bruteman
08-07-2003, 10:06 PM
I hear ya on the TV being crapy!

I can help with a split if you want. What kind of bodyparts do you like to put together...chest and tris(like parts) or chest and back(oposite ports) or chest and bi's(nothing to do with each other parts)? Also how many days a week do you want to workout, I recomend 3 or 4?

imo its way 2 much weight gainer try 2 include more real food in your diet-id say the most and its pushin it is 3 shakes a day ur up to like 5 or 6. replace the weightgainer w/ steaks.

Chest & Tri's

08-08-2003

Warmaup - doh! I got on the bench press, put 135 up, but pushed so hard the bar left my grip and then landed on my chest. I'm pretty sure I'm gonna have a wicked bruise from that one. What a clutz.

Bench Press
225x8 / 225x11 <- with spot. Let last rep descend VERY slowly. Fried my chest pretty good. My spotter then left, so I went to the Smith machine...

Smith Press
195x10 / 245x6 / 255x3 / 195x10
smith machine - bah! I need a spotter.

Incline Press
135x12 / 225x6 / 235x6 <-with spot. Thats a new high for me I think.

Decline Press
225x9 / 245x7 to TOTAL failure. Wish I had a spotter here. I got stuck under it and had to call out for help. On the bright side - I got a really good buzz from the oxygen deprivation, though.

Pec Deck
ahh - something nice and safe...
100x12 / 120x12 / 150x8 then drop set until failure

Dips
0x15 / 45x12 / 90x7 / 100x5

Triceps Pushdown
100x9 / 120x6 / 130x5

Overhead Tricep Extensions
50x6 -> 50x3 negative / 50x5 ->50x3 negative

Cambered bar Overhead Tricep Extension
50x5 felt wierd - got diff cambered bar, lowered weight / 20x20 oops too much / 40x12 oh well.

Skull Crushers
30x9 / 35x8

I know - I wish it were easier to feed myself. And I'm pretty sure I'll die of heart disease within a month if I start eating 5 or 6 steaks a day ;)

Seriously though, the gym I go to offers a meal service that is not too outrageously priced. I'm working up the nerve to commit the money so that I have a less "sugar-based" diet.

I hope it works because I want to be taking in 4000-5000 cals a day (too much?), and when I eat that much food, I tend to start gagging up every swallow after a day or two. Shakes just make it easier on me.

Thanks for the feedback on that - it should be one of my top priorities.

JHolmes145
08-08-2003, 03:13 PM
no doubt shakes are good- the steaks were jus a suggestion for example- i only eat 1 steak a day-heres some more examples of ways 2 get protein w/o shakes-steaks,fish,chicken,beef jerky(98% fat free~!)-well u get the drift also dont forget about carbs

I agree. More real food, less shakes. You could always drink more milk. But keep your calories up. I think really nailing down a schedule and keeping that training log will help with your current rut, or you may want to significantly change your routine all together.

But seriously bro, your progress thus far is nothing short of amazing. Very impressive work, you should be proud.

I'm honestly going to try to keep to a more solid diet. Or at least non-shake. What about egg whites. I can drink them, right? I've also thought about making oatmeal really watery and drinking that.

I think I'll start journaling my diet, too. I've definitely noticed that the journal is a BIG help in the gym. No wonder I've been getting nowhere lately. I keep grabbing the same weights, then I'll remember the journal and look up what I did last time, and it is usually the same (sometimes more) than I've just put on the bar.
Damn my short term memory! Back in the day, I didn't think I was going to need those brain cells.

Heh - thanks. I will say that in the face of zero progress for the last several months, I was sorely tempted. But I have no contacts that I would trust with something like that, and none of the knowledge that is required. I have been reading the anabolic zone though. Wouldn't post any questions in there because they seem to enjoy blasting newbies who have stupid questions. I'll just keep reading for now. :lurk: Lots of conflicting advice.

I have expreimented with 1-AD and Testabolin (sp?). Spent hundreds on that crap. At the end I was the exact same weight, only I was out a lot of money and pissed off all the time. And it made me really sleepy. I tried 1-AD to no effect, so I tried Testabolin (to no effect), then I tried taking them together - to no effect. It wasn't until I started guzzling weight gainer that I started putting on weight again - and I'm still not sure its not all fat. I bet a whole lot of it is.

2) Why do you military press the same as you bench press?
I don't know how to answer this... Because I can? I get lots of compliments at the gym on the shoulders. I guess when they are pumped they stand out. In fact, I think my shoulder workouts may be the reason my chest is lagging a little? I don't know - shoulders sure were burning this last chest day.

3) You look good.
Thanks again - I just went to your members pics post. I want those lats. I have a great deal of difficulty with the mind-muscle thing on back day. very frustrating. You're not the only one to ask me that, btw. I got searched by the border guys in Nuevo Laredo when we went for friend's wedding this summer. We're walking back across the bridge, and the guy stops us and is like "Step over here please. I guess its pretty obvious why I stopped you." I'm thinking, "Yeah, because I'm crossing the border with my hispanic wife and her sister..." then he goes "You're a pretty big guy. Have you brought any pharmaceuticals back with you? I'm gonna need you to empty those pockets."

I was astonished. It was pretty damn cool. They also stopped the guy in front of us, but he was mega vascular with calves that were frighteningly cut. I bet he was carrying something back...

I do the watered down oatmeal thing daily and it really is easy that way. I would cook the egg whites with some egss although that can be time consuming, i eat my eggs at night.
Precooking lots of chicken or beef makes it a bit easier as well, and canned tuna is always your friend.

That sucks about the milk thing cuz I get over a 1000 cals from milk a day, it would a lot tougher without it. Most people become lactose intolerant after not drinking it for a while, you could get used to it over time, but it probably isnt worth it eh. haha.

Seriously very impressive progress. How recently have you changed your routine.

Well - the journaling thing started on July 29th, so any routine changes would have happened after that.
The mega-calorie diet started several weeks before that. But I started slow and worked up to the amount that I now drink every day. Man - I'm starting to feel nautious just thinking about it. Never was a big eater.

My form goes to crap so fast when I really try to push it. I just don't feel it like I do when I go a little lighter and push out a few more reps. There is also a weird thing that sometimes happen where I feel like I'm stronger on the 3rd set than I was on the 1st and 2nd. I dunno.

I'm not so sure I am stagnant now. I've gained 8lbs in the last month or so. I know its not all muscle, but hopefully some of it is. The little electronic fat-meter thing at the gym tells me I'm 15%. When I go back on Monday, I'll check it again. Never had a real caliper test or anything done.

Back and Bicep (sorta) Day

8-10-2003
I wasn't supposed to go back to the gym until tomorrow, but I just reworked the budget since the wife will not be working... I needed to go to the gym to vent. This is gonna be tough.

Wide Grip Pullups
0x5 / 0x5 / 0x5

Wide Grip Cable Pulldowns
200x7 / 220x5 / 180x6 / 120x10 / 150x8 <- with spot

Seated Row (Lever machine)
135x10 / 135x10 / 160x4
My lower back was screaming during these. Tried not to use it but it hurts the chest when I press it up to the pad to get leverage.

Wide Grip Pullups (again) I WILL grow my lats.
0x5 / 0x4

Bent Over Dumbbell Rows
72x12 / 100x12
lower back muscles really are burning

Good Mornings 1st time with this exercise. I figure it might stretch my lower back muscles... I was wrong - just made it worse.
45(bar)x10

Dumbbell Curls
45x10 / 50x1 / 40x5

Machine Curls
90x10

It hurts my lower back a lot just holding my body up... I decided to postpone biceps and went home to rest.

There were definitely some questionable looking people crossing the foot bridge to Nuevo Laredo... It kinda freaks me out to think that they may have been carrying a sub machine gun.

Tried the drinking watered oatmeal thing today... Not nearly as bad as I have imagined. Although you have to drink a ton of oatmeal slop to equal a serving of weight gainer slop. Maybe I should put honey in there or something...

Thanks for the feedback Baldguy. I'm working on it.

Yep - I'm a legendary clutz.

Yesterday I sat down on a bench because my back was hurting. I had straddled it near the back and decided that I would lean back and lie on the bench for a while... Of course, I was already sitting on the end of the bench and pretty much rolled backwards onto the floor, ass in the air.

Thank God it was Sunday and no one was there to witness it!

I still have the remnants of a black eye I got from walking into a wall the weekend before last. That happened at a baby shower for my wife and me, in front of a group of people. There was even a little blood involved on that one. classic.

8-11-2003 220lbs

155x10 / 200x5 / 200x9

Standing Calf Raise machine
230x10 / 230x12 / 230x15
230 is the whole stack. I was pretty well crippled after this.

I've gotten a new workout partner for the week. Pushes me pretty hard. He would make me go until I surrender to the pain, and then make me do 1 more. Sadistic b@st@rd. Felt like a good leg day.

Got home and ate and went to bed, but couldn't sleep - my legs were killing me. Not bad pain or anything - just that incredibly tight, "I'm fixing to cramp up" feeling thats just annoying enough to prevent sleep. Decided to eat at 3:00am, went back to bed again. Alarm went off at 6:30am.

Today is chest day. Its gonna suck, but I don't want to miss this. New partner goes to school next week, so I plan to take advantage of his heartless cruelty while I can.

Your progress looks great, but I think you answered the question yourself on your plateau. Going from untrained to trained you always make mad gains, but once your body becomes used to training you have to "plan your work and work your plan" in order to keep seeing gains. Not only in the gym, but outside also. Mix up the diet a little with new protein sources, change the order and groupings of your workouts, try some new exercises. And track your workouts so you can see what works for you.

great progress and continued good luck!

Pullovers get my elbows to if I don't get my arms in just the right position. Those Inclines are damn impressive! I know you have strong shoulders, so I was wondering if you have a hard time with chest work? Do you find your delts get the brunt of the work or don't you have a problem with that?

Teufelhund

Bruteman - Thanks! The guy I worked out with was pushing 'em like they made of styrofoam. I always have problems keeping my shoulders out of chest exercises. I read that if you keep the lats contracted, it will help lessen this tendency. Today is the 2nd day after back so lat DOMS is raging - couldn't do that. I think I also read that wide shouldered people supposedly respond better to flies than presses. Hard to avoid bench presses though. Volume was way lower than normal today. I think I wasted a chest day with the added bonus of screwing up my elbows.

Bruteman
08-13-2003, 04:53 PM
Maybe do your flies or crossovers before you bench. Sort of a pre-exhaustion deal. It will lower your bench weight, but it might help you hit your chest more on bench.

Elbows are much better today after a day of rest. Pecs not as sore as they usually are on the day after the day after a workout.

Workout partner wants to do arms today, then shoulders tomorrow. I expect that the arms only day is probably just going to aggravate the elbow thing, but I'm gonna give it a try anyway. He's only available till Friday, then he goes off to school.

OK - I didn't want to post this cuz its easier to ignore, but I think I need to just say it so its more real.

I went to the nurse at work today. My blood pressure has risen to 170/90. Is it possible the weight I've gained in the last month (~10lbs) is screwing me up? I'm scared and pissed, and I just want it to go away. Totally abandoned the cardio since I started posting here because I am on a weight gaining mission. Maybe that wasn't such a good idea. It is normally in the 130/88 range. The nurse was not the usual one, so maybe she's wrong? In an attempt to verify, I went to Target and crammed my arm into their tiny little automated blood pressure dealy and got back 185/100. I think thats gotta be invalid, because it says it's made for the average arm of 9-13 inches around. Mine are about 16.5-17's, unflexed. Tried running it on my forearm, but it wouldn't work there. Will go back to nurse tomorrow to verify. I don't want to face the possibility of this ending my bodybuilding "experience" - its the only sport I'm halfway good at, and I am SO much happier now than before.

I gotta say this really sucks ass.

hoping the doctor will just load me up on heart meds and tell me to go on about my business. hopefully thats not too much to ask.

By the way, I did ignore it today. Although I took more of my BP medicine beforehand. Had a pretty decent curl jockey day. Bi's and Tri's. forgot my book at the house, borrowed some paper at the gym, took my notes, then forgot the paper at the gym.

Sooo.. no workout stats for today. Although I can say that I got weighted dips at 125 for 6 times. And then the guys made me bench 315 because I told them I couldn't do it and they didn't believe me. I actually did it on the second attempt, barely. That one made my eyes sting and ears itch. My ears always get itchy when I really strain hard on a lift.

ech. to bed I go.

Woooooooooo-Hoooooooooo!!!!! :hump:

My BP was 140/80 this morning. Apparently the stupid new nurse doesn't know crap about how to take someone's blood pressure. 140/80 still isn't great, but its not a death sentence, either. Also, I had just walked from the parking garage about 1/2 mile to the office and up 2 flights of stairs to the nurse's office. Probably would have been normal if not for that.

Teeheeheee! I'm so friggin' HAPPY!

Glad to see your BP is ok. :) It stinks having to deal with medical problems. I have to use my inhaler any time I do anything. Even going to the movies! Me and the misses went to one of those stadium style seated movie theaters and by the time we got to the top row I sounded like I just finished a race. You just have to remember to keep the meds handy and not "test" yourself(your body will kick you in the ass if you do).

Heh - I've actually got an inhaler buried in some drawer somewhere, but thankfully, after that one incedence of asthma I've never needed it again. Seems to only happen when after I've been refinishing furniture.
At 170/90, I don't think I'd have time to get kicked in the ass. Pretty sure you just instantly drop dead with a brain hemorhage.

I know you denied it, but I am willing to bet you are/or recently have taken anabolics. Your pictures give it away. If so, that is the reason for your blood pressure issues (I suspect). Of course, you could just have high blood pressure anyway, but if you never have had it and now do after taking anabolics, it just adds up.

Wow - your awesome powers of deduction truly amaze me.

I don't think I ever said that I never had high blood pressure. I guess I may have said its never been that high(which of course it wasn't, because the reading was bad).
I suggest you read my initial posts on this board about the ASD repair surgery I had this January. Ever since then I've had elevated blood pressure. But, it wasn't until the realization that my 1st kid is on the way and we'll be operating at a net loss of 1000/month (since my wife is now not working), added to the fact that in an effort to prepare our house for our new family, we've torn up the flooring the decking and just about every other god d@mn thing in the place, that I've been pissed off and stressed out and having some sleep issues. I promise you when I (1) become desperate enough, (2) have money and, (3) get the nerve to try them, I'll let you know. And there will be pictures.

And I'm not an expert, but I'm pretty sure that at the rate I'm drinking the weight gainer, I would have gained more than the 8 or 10 pounds in the last month. As I understand it, in water weight alone it would have been more.

And, out of curiosity, what specifically about my pictures makes you so sure I'm taking steroids??? My pictures surely are not all that impressive.

Ok buddy, I'm looking forward to reviewing the "evidence"

Thanks,

The look of your shoulders and traps. I could be wrong, but I doubt it. I won't comment any further, I was trying to help. You see, my blood pressure is very sensitive to anabolic use and when I was younger and dabbled I too experienced high blood pressure. If you are a young man with no real prior history of blood pressure issues, then it is most unusual for you to develop it now that you are exercising regularly. If anything, it should be the opposite (other than transient rises while you are actually exercising).

I apologize for the accusation if it is untrue, but if not, then I caution you against further use.

Teufelhund
08-15-2003, 04:59 PM
Alright - well - the shoulders are a genetic thing. I'll try to dig up a pic that is obviously really old. The one I'm thinking about is when I was 17 or 18, which is 13 years ago (I'm almost 31, not really a "young man" by most standards). I hope it shows what I started with. It won't happen tonight, though. I have to say that I found your dumping of that crap in my journal, well, offensive to say the least. I have been busting my ass for (what seems to me) like a looong time now. And of course you're free to your opinion, I just wish you hadn't screwed up my journal. Your repeated accusations make it uncomfortable for me to share the location of it to people who actually know who I am, like my coworkers, with whom I have a vested interest in NOT being accused of being a drugee in front of. In retrospect, I should have ignored you and not admitted to any curiosity, I guess.

Oh well, live and learn. No hard feelings, just stop doing it. Or make your own thread and hypothesize all you want.

That pain does have to do with form. Make sure you are not taking your heels too far down on certain exercises such as seated calf raises. You may end up working isometrically working out the front of your leg during the exercise. This is not necessarily a bad thing-- but may be the reason for the pain.

BB Rows
135x10 / 225x5youch! / 185x10 / 185x10
OK - First go at this exersize. It makes all the little tendons in my forearms snap around like someone plucking on guitar strings. And when they snap, my fingers tingle. That can't be good.

Cable Pulldowns
200x8 / 220x6+2forced / 220x?

Bent Over DB Rows
100x10 / 110x10 / 120x11 <- jerked this set around alot. cheater!

Back Extensions
0x12 / 0x10

Went and did stretching, because extensions make my back scream.

Got the floor grouted this morning (the 22nd)! :D My back was really tired, but we got it done. All I have left for the living room is cleaning and sealing. Probably will get that done tomorrow. I can't wait to get the furniture out of the kitchen.

No partner today. Sucked for the Presses. My regular partner starts school next week, so his schedule is going to have to change. I'm a little bummed about that - he is a good partner.

Heh, I got offered free cable today if I help a really dorky guy build up his shoulders like mine. The annoyance factor alone with this guy... ugh. I heard his workout partner tell him "you talk more than my Grandma!" LOL - I almost dropped a dumbell on my head when I heard that. Needless to say, there will be no free cable.

Tell me exactly what you consider to be a barbell shoulder press. Your dumbbell strength does not correlate to your barbell strength. Are you performing partials? Going back to the fact that you shoulder press almost as much as you bench, it just doesn't make sense.

I am perplexed...

Just wanted to comment there is some seriously funny stuff in here. Thanks. :) I'm just a bit slow in getting in to read your journal but I've read all now.

Your results are ****ing awesome in my opinion. As Herc has pointed out you have started from an underweight position and this seems to have helped greatly. (I've spent more time cutting then growing and it shows :( ) Keep up the great progress.

I am perplexed...

Chris. It is soo nice to hear from you again. How have you been? I have to say I'm beginning to look forward to your (somewhat negative? maybe I'm misreading you.) posts, despite myself.

honest.

No really - I mean it.

I do not generally do "partials", with the exception of sometimes the last rep of a set, and that rep is not included in the count, or is marked "forced" if my spotter helps. I think you would find that I am very conscientious about form.

I do what this guy does for BB Military press: http://exrx.net/WeightExercises/DeltoidAnterior/BBMilitaryPress.html
except I only take it to just below my chin, seated, with a spotter - who gets in trouble for touching the bar while its moving. If he touches it, that gets recorded as a "forced" rep, and I start to bitch if I didn't ask for the help.
hmm. The text on the link above says "down to front of neck". The animation, however, clearly shows the model taking it all the way down to his chest - any further and he'd be curling it. In order for me to do that, I think I would have to pull my elbows behind my back, dangerous while holding a couple hundred pounds over your legs.

My dumbell Military presses look exactly like this:
http://exrx.net/WeightExercises/DeltoidAnterior/DBShoulderPress.html
almost always without a spotter, therefore they tend to be lighter. (I'm assuming you think the direction of the correlation mismatch is "big BB press, little DB press".)
I was actually surprised I was even able to get the 80's up on my shoulders to press last time - thats the hard part for me, because my biceps are not particularly strong because my forearms are weak because I think I may be getting carpal tunnel syndrome, probably from typing long justifications for my every movement to you. ;) Just kidding. Its from my computer job.

About being perplexed: The guys at the gym are perplexed that I can't bench more, not that I can military press a lot, so in a way you are not alone.

Nice Military Press strength. That impresses me more than a big bench. It does seem odd though. I can't lift nearly as much as you with a BB but I am close to your strength on DB's.

Arm Day

08/23/2003
Cardio: Crosstrainer for 20minutes at 156bpm

Incline Triceps Extension
130x20 / 150x20 / 175x20 / 195x12
My first experience with this exercise. It was on the "double pulley" cable machine, so I guess the real weight is probably about 1/2 of what is marked on the stack. Not sure how I feel about these - the stack ends at 150, so I was tying a 25 and 45 lb plate to the stack at the end there. Think its more trouble than its worth.

Pushdowns - underhand overhand
150x12uh x 12oh / 150x12uh x 10oh / 175x8uh x 9oh
also on the "double pulley" cable machine

DB Overhead Triceps Extensions
50x10 / 55x9 / 60x6
form on the 60's was a litttle lacking, esp. at later reps

SkullCrushers
95x15 / 115x9

Bicep Preacher Curl Machine
60x? / 100x10
I hate the preacher curl machine.

Standing Cambered Bar Curls
110x8 / 130x4+2forced / 110x5

Dumbell Curls
45x12 / 50x8 / 55x4

kinda sucky day - I was at the gym *forever*. Working out with a guy in his mid-late forties. Thinks he knows everything about working out, but is built like a flabby girl scout - not that he doesn't try with every ounce of his being. But the talking wouldn't stop. He actually told me he wants to talk to his doctor about prescribing him Deca. Thats about the dumbest damned thing I've ever heard come out of his mouth. I told him this, and then recommended that he inquire into HRT instead, as they now make patches and gels and all that. I'm sure at his age, he'll probably qualify for the treatment.

He wants to begin working out with me regularly. This is the same guy who insists on lifting half the weight when he spots someone. He knows better than to try that with me, but requires frequent reminding. I'm looking for a nice way to weasel out of it. Any ideas? He's a nice guy, and I don't want to be a jerk about it.

In retrospect, I should have ignored you and not admitted to any curiosity, I guess.
As far as the coworker thing goes, well, obviously none of them can know I post here anyway.

My gains till now are real. It did piss me off when you dismissed my hard work with steroid accusations. As I think it would anyone in my position. And if I remember correctly, my original reaction was something like "Thanks, but you're wrong". Hardly "horribly offended". It wasn't until you pressed the subject that you began to irritate me.

I was hoping the doc would adjust my medicine. I definitely don't think stopping creatine is going to counter any effect gear might have. I understand the decision has been made, I suppose the only thing I still question is the timing of the decision and the intelligence of it based upon your claimed medical history.

If you don't ask for a response this is the last you will hear on the subject from me.

OK - SLDL's make my lower back hurt. I do not feel them in my hams. I do not feel them, Sam I am. I think I need to strengthen my lower back. Tonight is my first night in the forearm splints for the Carpel Tunnel syndrome. I bet those are going to take a while to get used to. Not very fashionable, either. Someone needs to take some initiative and make a set that look like gladiator gauntlets. With maybe some chrome rivets and spikes and leather, just to butch it up a little. It'd be interesting to walk into work wearing a pair of those...

I am long waisted and short legged, too - maybe this is part of the problem? I feel like this is an important exercise to incorporate, but I just can't seem to do them in a way that hits my hams. Any suggestions? I'm stumped.

I had this problem too but with RDL's. I fixed this problem by doing the exercise w/o weight a few times. Stand straight then begin to bend down. Be sure that you back is straight and you are bending at your hips. Your butt should start to stick out some. One other thing to do is keep your head up, don't look down. If you do it right, once you get close to or a little past a 45 degree angle, you should feel the stretch in your hams. You really don't have to bend that far down to work your hams. I think people make the mistake of rounding their backs. This will let you bend farther down, but it really won't help your hams much.

Back straight, head up.

Good idea to drop the necklace it was detracting from your 18 inches. ;) Nice work. Are you planning on cutting any before your next bulk? It will be great to see your progress as you go under the needle, so to speak.

Yeah, I want to see some abs one day. But not at the cost of my gains. Right now I'm mostly concerned I'll just get really big really fast and then really small even faster.
I'm pretty sure I am getting fat, though. As someone who's always been, uh, way skinny, the whole big gut look is somewhat disturbing. I'm turning into a fatty.
And I'm sooo HUNGRY!

I found my first stretch mark the day before yesterday, btw. Its right where my delt and pec meet, but only on the left side. This is good news, I think. Maybe its time to get the measuring tape out. I've been keeping records for 2 years, but all the measurements are unflexed because I didn't know any better. I need to figure out if I should continue the wrong way, or go ahead and start doing it right, and throw away 2 years of data.

Shoulder Day

9-4-03 234lbs @ 17% according to the lying piece of crap electronic fatmeter thing.

I was exhausted today before I came to the gym, and stayed that way while there. Numbers are low, but I'm feeling the pain anyway.

Barbell Military Press
135x15 / 225x8 / 205x10

DB Military Press
70x12 / 85x10 / 90x7 / 85x8
next time I'll try to start with the DB's. That should increase my numbers a little.

Upright cambered bar row
95x12 / 115x12 / 115x10

Lateral DB Raises
40x9 / 40x7->35x5 / 25x15
this was sad, sad, sad 3 sets.

Standing Rear Delt DB Raises
30x15 / 40x10

Seated Rear Delt Raises
45x15

Rear Delt Deck machine thingywith no numbers on the stack.
1/2stackx12 / 1/2stackx12 / 3/4stackx12

Rear delts are burning. At least I think I hit them pretty well.

I'm beat. Gonna go scrounge up a little food and try to sleep with those stupid wrist splints on. I feel like a total gimp wearing them. It sucks, and the anti-inflammatory (lodine) does jack squat for the discomfort/numbness/tingling. Oh well - Maybe it takes more than a day to take effect.

Thank Cocoa... I'm still dissappointed, though. It seems like my shoulders are getting weaker? Or I have been putting more emphasis on other parts and thus leaving little left for shoulder day... I know that awesome chest day had a lot of effect on my performance this shoulder day. I was wiped.

I WILL do a whole day full of sets of ten. soon. I want lats bad.

BB Rows
225x10 / 225x12 / 275x8

Lever Pulldowns
180x10. OK - lats were fried.

DB Curls
40x12 / 50x7 / 40x10 / 30x10 / 25x19 / 25x15
Light weights becuase forearms hurting

Cambered bar Curls

Leg Day

9-7-03 232lbs - I think its time to up the calories.

I'm really starting to like Leg Day. Thats sick.

Squats
185x15 / 315x6 / 405x4 / 455x5 / 455x10
Tried this new strategy where I don't go all out until I get the heavier weight on the bar. Seems to have worked for me, cuz I got 50lbs more up than last time. I wish I had tried to stick it out on the 4th set a little longer. The tenth rep of the last set made me grunt pretty loud... Usually not noisy - it just kinda slipped out. It surprised me. 455 is up 90lbs from the beginning of August - with better form too, I bet.

Dumbell Lunges
60x8 / 80x8 / 90x6
Thanks to my partner for making me finish the very difficult (for me) last set...

SLDL's
135x10 / 225x10 / 275x4
Still relatively new to these - only my 2nd or 3rd workout using them. I tried 315 and couldn't pick it up. 275 made my back hurt in a way that I am not so sure was good. Feels fine now though.
Partner said to imagine squeezing legs together during lift - that made a LOT of difference in how much "ham" was involved.

Leg Curls
120x10 / 130x6 <-crappy. Hams were fried by SLDL's, I guess.

Seated Calf Raise
135x16 / 180x10 / 225x10

Standing Calf Raise Machine
fullstackx16
had to stop because left calf was in severe pain. I really thought I had injured myself for about 20 minutes after this last set of the day.

WoooooooHoo! 4 exercises with personal bests!

hmmm. I have a feeling I'm gonna be a really unhappy guy whenever things go back to normal.

Moved workouts to 6:00am to stick with training partner. Its been an adjustment but has been getting better throughout the week.

I don't really feel like typing the whole week's workouts. They look mostly like the others. Not a good week for advancing the weight, although I'm happy with all the days except for the Monday Chest day.

I also got a couple 20-45 minute cardio sessions in this week in an effort to stay at least a little bit lean. Sometimes a good cardio session is just as effective at making me hyper as a nice bottle of workout crack.

9-8 Chest day
slow workout. felt weak at this time of the morning.

9-9 Back
hit Barbell Rows at 315, not the best form, but...

9-10 Shoulders
shoulders are not getting stronger. I think they've been jinxed.

9-11 Arm Day(AM) *and* Arm Day(PM)
I got 160 down 6 times on the triceps pushdowns... Really seeing some nice strength here all of the sudden. Need to work more on biceps to balance out tris and especially shoulders. Carpal Tunnel Syndrome make bicep work no fun.

9-12 Other - shrugs, calf raises
Box Shrugs 360x15 - have a stiff neck now...

still at 231. oh well - maybe I need to sleep/eat more. or.... Maybe the stuff is working and I'm magically getting leaner whilst simultaneously gaining new muscle.

rookiebldr
09-12-2003, 07:09 PM
Getting leaner whilst magically gaining new muscle is always a good thing. I aught to try that some day. You didn't list a leg day. I can't really believe you didn't train legs? Watch out, else we'll be calling you a curl-jockey. ;)

Working out at 6 am sucks. That is all.

Teufelhund

Rookie: I really hope that is what's happening. Sundays are leg day. I did them, its just that they're posted waaay back there.

Heh - curl jockey... I wish. I do not enjoy biceps training right now at all. I think my tris and delts are becoming very very large in comparison to my bis.

Still no baby. Wife is having some trouble walking now. This is bad because I am now her little gopher boy. I don't mind, although for the majority of the day I've been feeling like I want to twist the heads off of kittens.

Tomorrow will be one day over-due by our day count, and 6 days early by the doctor's estimate.

She's finally made a comment on my weight gain. "Wow - your arms are huge!" Its about time. :) I think most of the weight so far has gone to my legs, though.

Close Grip Pulldowns: 160x12 / 170x10 / 200xfailure->140xfailure->80xfailure.

Seated Cable Rows: 210x12 / 250x10 / 250x10 - 250 is the whole stack. guess its time to start pinning plates to the side of the stack now! :D

Evening:

Pullups: 0x6 / 0x7 / 0x7

DB Curls: 50x7 / 45x8 / 40x12 - damned forearms! The skinny little kid next to me outcurling me by 5 pounds, and it *hurt*.

Thanks Rook, I was actually only gone from the gym for 6 days (during the birth and a couple days after). I lost 10 pounds in that 6 days that I still haven't gained back.

My cycle has only been over for 3 weeks now, so I can't make any statements as to what I'll keep, but right now its only 5-10lbs. I was 230-235 at the peak, but of course that was pretty much all water. I'm now 220, after starving at the hospital for almost a week. In the 3 weeks since I stopped I have yet to lose weight- maybe a pound or two. I don't feel bad, so I'm thinking I must not be too low on Test. Either I didn't manage to suppress myself, or I'm still not technically "off", because of the long half-life. I'm getting some little zits and stuff, so something is changing. I plan to use Clomid for 2 more weeks, then coast for a loooong while, with just the boys down there to help. ;)

complaints? the feeling of "cheating" eventually took some of the fun out of working out. I couldn't maintain my diet. My stomach was very sick for 3 weeks in the middle of the cycle because of the weight gainier - it went away as soon as I stopped drinking it. Of course, I also started losing weight at that point, too - or at least stopped gaining.

I need to get my diet issues worked out before I try anything ever again. Just filling the holes in my diet with weight gainer was a bad idea. damn you, lactose.

Man - I'm getting DOMS after working out now, too. I forgot about that. I kind of missed it. I would get sore while on, but this is different.

ugh. Wife called me home from the gym tonight because the baby was crying. Now I'm home and he's not crying - not that I could do much to help anyway. I guess it was OK because it was turning out to be a really crappy back day. All I got to do was 3 sets of pullups and 3 sets of cable rows.

OK - so I've been keeping this measurement journal for the past 2 years or so... I decided to post some measurements. All measurements are cold and unflexed, because when I started I did not know that you were supposed to flex when taking measurements. I couldn't change halfway through because that would have invalidated my previous measures. Anyway...
Somehow I never took measures at the peak of my cycle, when I was 235. Everything before the Nov '03 measure is natural.

Thanks Champ, Xand.

Well, cycle results are still not in. I may end up with no cycle results if I lose any more weight. Although I think I've leaned up a bit too, so the weight figure by itself is a little deceiving.

I guess its chest day today. I feel pretty "blah" about just about everything right now. It sucks. I think the clomid is affecting my mood for sure, or maybe its just the precipitous drop in T levels thats making me feel crappy. Any suggestions out there?

Appetite is low, too.

Teufelhund

Wow - its really quiet in here. Is anybody out there? ;)

OK. I forced myself to drink oatmeal all day long, went to the gym, drank some ephedra drink, and had what felt like a pretty kick ass chest/triceps/calf day. I really needed that. Got a monster pump, too. The ephedra really snapped me out of the funk I was in...

I think I've pulled my right serratus or something. My ribs hurt when I do any heavy pushing or crunching exercise. Its been hurting for over a week. Started after a way too heavy shrug session. Anyway, thought I'd mention it, because it affects my bench.

Still holding onto 220lbs.

Bench Press - 135x15 / 225x11 / 275x8 / 295x5
Decline Press - 225x11 / 275x4 / 225x10 / 245x6
DB Flies - 45x12 / 60x6 / 70x5
Dips - 0x20 / 45x10

superset
Triceps Pushdown - 100x10 / 80x10 / 60x10
Overhead Triceps Extensions - 30x10 / 40x8 / 45x8

Skull Crushers - 75x12

Seated Calf raise - 180x15 / 225x7 / 225x6
Standing Calf Raise - whole stack x 15 x 10 x 10

Pec Deck - 100x15

Low cable fly - 35x15 / 50x10 / 70x8

I did a bunch of other stuff, too, but I was buzzing so hard on the ephedra, I didn't stop to write it down. doh.

Those are a great set of stats and tons of improvements. That's too bad about the lack of training and eating over the last few weeks and right at the end of your cycle when you need it most to help keep the gains. But you'll likely still come out ahead.

As for the clomid, yes it seems to cause a fair bit of moodiness in some. Keep it going and get yourself recovered.

Now, we want to see some new mass pics before you loose anymore size!!! ;)

LOL - Bad planning on my part, its not like the baby was unexpected.

After my day at the gym today I feel much more optimistic about keeping my gains. 2 of the non-regular guys at the gym made note of my progress tonight, too. Thats always cool.

We'll see about those pics... Might take 'em tonight, if I can get my wife to do it. Should've taken pics while my tris were all pumped up, LOL

Well, the in-laws have the camera right now, so no new pictures tonight.

This is actually a good thing, because I've been letting the chest hair grow back, and its looking pretty foobar right now. I have to say that I don't remember having this much hair on my chest before... I've been itching for 2 weeks now, so I'm not sure I want to remove it for the picture, then have to start all over again. I'll probably regret not shaving later when I look at the pictures, though, so I'll probably do it. maybe.

Heh - I looked bloated, of course, and waaaay greasy. Its the Greek in me. I din't have the vascularity, either, although I had nice round mounds of muscle... I could kick myself for not taking pictures. If there's a next time, I'll make sure to document EVERYTHING.

Thanks for the props, Rook - Its really hard for me to tell a difference, though. I know I must be bigger because I weigh more, but I can't really say where. I think its actually in my legs and chest. Maybe back, too.

Leg day:

223lbs!

Squats:
135x12 / 225x12 / 315x12 / 405x10 / 455x8
When I was reracking the 455, the left side of the bar hit the peg instead of going over it and bounced backwards. I had to throw the bar and scoot out before it landed on me. It made a hell of a noise when it hit the squat rack. That bar will never be the same again - its pretty bent now. That'll teach me to squat without a spotter... I was actually surprised by how non-embarrassed I was by the whole thing. I was just like, "Man, that coulda turned out a lot worse..."

Leg Curls:
120x10 / 130x8 / 140x10 / 150x7
So my best friend's wife calls the gym. He was up in his attick and had fallen through the ceiling. I was being summoned for emergency home repair help. <damn!> I go home, change, and call them to tell them I'm on the way, and they're like "Oh, well, the neighbor knows how to do it, so we're having him do it."

GRRRRRRRRRR.....

I ate something, changed again and went back to the gym.

SLDL:
225x12 / 315x10 / 315x10

Hack Squats:
270x12 / 360x12 / 450x12 / 540x10!

Nautilus Leg Extensions:
250x12 / 295x8 / 295x7

Seated Calf Raise Lever Machine:
180x12 / 230x9 / 205x10

Standing Calf raises in weighted dip/pullup machine:
whole stack x 12 / stack+45x15 / stack+45x12

Pretty good leg day, I guess. I wonder if I should be doing more for hams and calves since everyone says they are weak points - Does it look like I'm going too light on them? cuz it sure doesn't feel like it...

suggestions?

I got a photo signed by Mr. O for my son yesterday. He was in town guest posing at a contest. I didn't get to go, but my friend got the photo for me. She said he's larger in real life than any picture shows.

I wish I had the $$ to go see it for myself!

I have been looking for new ways to do calf raises since I am limited by the size of the stack on the machine at my gym. I am having trouble picturing how you do calf raises in the dip/pullup machine since there are no shoulder pads. Do you support yourself by holding the dip/pullup bars while using the foot support for resistance?

Teufelhund
11-09-2003, 06:15 PM
Its kind of like a dip stand with a waistbelt attached to a lever. It has a step at the bottom to put the toes on. Not the normal dip stand.
I have to put a large peg in the stack and put a 45plate on to get the weight I need.

That doesn't happen to be the old school Nautilus one with the three different levels to do raises on, and the pullup bar and dip bars now does it? If so, that's the ****.

yeah, the stack is plenty for the pullups and dips, but not calf raises- you have to "supplement" with extra plates pinned to the stack.

Scott S
11-10-2003, 03:36 PM
Hey T-Hund, how slow are your reps on calf raises? Try waiting for 2 seconds at the top and 2 seconds at the bottom. I was doing much more weight before, but now that I've slowed the reps down, my calves burn like no other.

Saint Patrick - Squat strength skyrocketed while I was on cycle. I hope I can hold onto it. I got to parallel, not the floor. ATF squats are not for 31 year olds. Really I've spent about 4days/week with leg DOMS for the better part of a year. I'm not sure how big my legs are ever gonna get.

Scott S - I'll be sure to try the pause you suggest. Thanks for the tip!

OK - I intended to do back today, but a friend was at the gym who wanted to do chest, so thats what we did. Its only been 4 days since my last chest day so it was rough tonight.

Chest Day:

Bench Press:
135x20 / 225x10 / 275x5 / 315x3negatives / 225x8

Incline Bench Press:
135x12 / 205x10 / 225x8 / 275x4

Decline Bench Press:
185x12 / 225x8 / 245x7 / 225x10

Incline Dumbell fly:
45x12 / 60x10 / 70x5

Low Cable fly:
50x13 / 70x8 / 50x12

I tried to go after Triceps after, but my elbows were sore as hell. Decided to save it for later since it wasn't "time" yet anyway.

I just reread this and was stunned by how idiotic it sounds. What I meant to say was:
I will become a squat nazi. I've only been doing a half-ass job for less than a year. How can I expect monster legs on a routine like that?

OK - I try to be a nice guy, but sometimes I just can't help myself.

One of the employees at the gym got a 2003 Dodge Hemi 1500 4x4 absolutley LOADED earlier this year. Mine is the same, but its a 2002, so not a hemi. Anyway, he's been giving me **** about my truck for 6 months now.

Not anymore!

He took his expensive ass truck, along with all of its wood grain dash and heated leather seats and chrome, offroading into a drainage ditch and buried the nose so far in the mud that his dipstick was under water. Totaled.

I think I'll make sure to get my truck all washed up and shiny before I head to the gym tonight. I just couldn't be any more pleased.

My hips and knees are a little sore during squats, and sometimes I get a twinge out of nowhere, but the leg joints are doing fine.
