Question for you...a friend of my had a hysterectomy a couple of years ago. She also had the hyperthyroid thing going. However, she has gained 50 lbs since the operation and this was while working out, etc... She's doing the estrogen thing, but the docs won't give her anything for her thyroid unless they take it out. What kind of advice can I give her? She takes good care of herself and everything. She is also very receptive to alterative medicine. As a result of this, she had never been overweight in her life until this operation. It's jacking with her self-esteem big time. Please help me help her *grovel* Thanks.

are they giving her radioactive iodine treatment?

a little test with that estrogen would be a good thing, btw.

with a situation like this, with hyperthyroid cuasing metabolism issues, i honestly would opt to have it taken out, and then be given a replacement thyroid dosage. if it were me it would be a T3/T4 combo, but that owuld depend on the doctor. In a way, i can see where they don't want to give her additional T-4, because if she's hyper, you'll never really know when she goes toxic.

Thanks. She's going to see the endrocrinolgists here for the first time this week. She was being seen in Arizona before. I was telling her that she probably needed test or something like that. The aren't giving her radioactive iodine. As a matter of fact, all she gets is the estrogen. Hoping these navy docs can help her out. Thanks.

well if she is truly hyperthyroid (some people react with weightgain even tho there thyroid is hyperactive) the route they usuall take is either surgery to take the thyroid out, or radioactive iodine treatment to kill it off. they then put the person on a full replacement does of t/4. some forward thinking docs will do a t3/t4. I hope the Navy docs are forward thinking.

Yay!!! I finally did the 40# db's for bench!
Haven't been challenging myself enough. Especially on lower body so I'm adding a little weight at a time to see what I can really handle. My immediate squat goal is to have a plate on either side. And do full squats unlike the majority of women at the gym here who only go down like 1/4 of the way.
[mini-rant]Gonna be participating in a base exercise this week so I may not be able to make it to the gym. They say that they want it as real world as possible, but if I'm not at my phone when they call because I'm at the gym lifting, they raise merry hell.
I sooo can't wait for my next assignment. Only 7 months to go! [/mini-rant]
Anyway, I want to thank all of you who have been supportive and have freely given advice, commentary, spam-cans, etc... It has been appreciated.

Tried the Hammer Iso Leg ext for the 1st time and the jury's still out on that one.
Will not be doing standing calves on Cybex equipment again. I feel it more in my painful back than in my calves.
Only had time for 1 tricep exercise because I was pressed for time.
Still no cardio and sleep sucked. Diet was decent.

You pressdown some impressive weight. To me it looks way out of proportion to your other lifts. You are the tricep queen. :bow:

I've always been strong on the rope pressdowns for some reason. That and calves. It doesn't make sense to me either.

That's all folks. Like I said, abbreviated. My boss said that going to the gym is not a good enough reason to not be by the phone. :swear: Considering retiring before getting promoted. Retiring as an E-7 has been a goal from the very beginning, but my BS threshold has pretty much been reached. It's just not worth the stress and migraines.

Still on telephone stand-by so no gym for me. Also working 12 hr shifts. Up at 4:00 in the morning just to make sure that I'm ready for work on time. Out of work at 6:00 at night. Thank goodness this base-exercise ends tomorrow, unless someone does something so phenomenally stupid that the commander extends it. Hey, it can and does happen.
Bought some new running shoes yesterday during an extremely brief lunch break. Mizuno WaveRiders. Can't wait to break those babies in! If the exercise ends tomorrow night, this girl is going running! To the gym on both Saturday and Sunday. Wanna get a good assessment of my strength before my cycle jacks things up. I have at most, a week and a half then I'll be in a holding pattern for about a week. I wish I was one of those lucky women who actually become stronger during their cycles.

You just couldn't wait until you had a chance to get your gait checked could ya...had to get the new running shoes? huh...I like Mizuno's, but I'm a bit too heavy a runner to use them. I think as far as the exotic shoe variety goes (anything that's not Nike, Reebok, Brooks, Adidas, or Saucony) my favorites are Diadoras. I field tested their motion control shoe....it was about one of the sweetest shoes ever...plus since I was field testing I got it for free. :) Anyway...don't get me started on running shoes because I go on forever. hehe

Thanks EC. I used to walk/run on the insides of my feet big time. But I started working on it years ago and now pretty much stay centered on my feet. But if I don't stay on top of it, they'll start to go inward again.

Well, today's workout was choppy at best. Just couldn't get in the groove. I'm also having my cycle related joint angst so if I can just maintain for another week and a half, I'll be going up in poundages again. Tried to preacher curl. For some reason, I can't do these. It's frustrating :mad: In the hour that I was gone, my children managed to trash out both the living room and the kitchen. They also shorted out the circut that runs the TV (hah! that'll teach the little buggers)
Got to run last night and that was most excellent :thumbup: My new shoes required no breaking in so I'm happy.

Non-workout related stuff: Keep reading on the forum how great SYOD is so I got the CD today. I'm not loving it. Sorry folks.

I try not to be half assed about arm training because I don't want to be one of those middle-aged chicks with flabby arms. Zottman curls are my favorite bicep exercise. Maybe I'll just do those instead of regular curls from now on.

Just curious as to what branch of the military you are in? I am sure you have been asked this numerous times. I was in the Navy for a while so I know it can be frustrating sometimes. Enjoy reading the journal, and keep up the good work.

Nope, refuse to move on base. I managed the impossible for here. Found a big house with a big fenced in yard on a dead end street. No neighbors and only about 8 min from Courtney commissary. That place is the best kept secret on the island. Everybody goes to the Kadena & Foster commissaries. This means that the Courtney one is always well stocked. During the dock strike a few months ago, it was the only place with real milk.

I would LOVE a few bottles of acquarius!!! That stuff is so good. If you are serious about sending me the CD and the acquarius then I will PM you my addy and I will need yours to send you some loot for shipping and the acquarius.

And the courtney commisary is a good place....like you stated, most go to the one at kadena. I was on comrats so I made a weekly trip to the commisary at courtney. Have you had a chance to go to the military resort/recreation camp that is way up at the north end of the island? Cant remember what its called....but what a nice place. Plenty of cabbins to rent, ski boats, jet ski's, dive trips...and the water up there is unbelievably clear...even more so than the water around hansen and courtney.

The resort, Okuma. It's pretty nice. Of course, every time we go out there my husband drags me snorkeling. I loathe and detest snorkeling. That one part of the trip ends up putting a damper on the whole thing. Everything else is cool though. May rent a cabin and stay there for a few days after my husband gets back from his deployment. Alone. Unless they arrange my trip to the Army hospital for the specialist to look at my back. Hawaii! Alone! Sure, pm me the addy. Won't be able to mail it until Tues though because that part of the postal center is not open on Monday.

Diet could have been better but my monthly starch cravings cannot be helped. I get monster headaches if I ignore them (I tried again yesterday...it was painful) Sleep sucked too. I'll be turning in early tonight.

Gym observations: There's this personal trainer that works at the Risner and occasionally lurks here. (hi Milenia!) She's usually working a client when I'm there, but not today! I got to watch her work out. This girl has her ish together! I felt like a colossal weakling after watching her.

We have one lady I've seen working out that has a better physique than most guys. Wide shoulders, big lats, massive legs, and a 6-pack. Every time she walks in I get jealous.

Is Jack's still on Kadena? We used to love that place. Watched the Sumo in the bar then off to the kobe beef room.

Excuuuse me??? I would beg to differ, but that would involve begging so I'm won't. I'll have you know that I totally exceed the standards for the AF fitness test. Shut the smart-ass tester right up. The girl's a bitch on wheels so I got lots of malicious pleasure out of showing her how it's done. Go me!

Yep, Jack's is still here, but it's kind of gone downhill. Did the O'Club have their awesome Sunday Buffet when you were here? More food than P-Man can eat during his bulking phase ;) They're building a Chili's on base. Of course, it won't be done till after I leave :rolleyes: I usually don't eat on base though. It's all about CoCo's! 24 hr curry joint. I'm up to level 5. Gonna try to go up to 7 before the hubby gets back from his deployment. Some guy tried to go straight to Level 10 and got a bloody nose for his bravery (bwaaahaaa).

Yep. I remember the buffet! It's a shame about Jack's. My wife actually got into watching Sumo wrestling there. Used to be a very nice place.

G-B is cool, he just likes tweaking me a bit, as do most Marines, but I respect that. Everybody loves the AF when they need picking up out of the jungle in a helo. I used to get regular requests for radar control in the Philippines from Marine A-4 pilots in Cope Thunder exercises, much to the chagrin of the boys (and girls) in MACS-4 from Futenma, heheh.

Nobody put stuff away either. The DB rack is labeled so that people know where to put what pound weight. It must have been illiterate BB'ers day @ the Risner because it was a mess.
Happy with the Leg Ext's. My weight would not go up on those for ages and now boom! My knees were shot so my squats were not as good as I would have liked them.

This guy obviously. And the entire clinic either needed to attend this one or the one scheduled for tomorrow morning. Since I'm on leave tomorrow, I had to go to the one this p.m.
The DL's were good :thumbup: Actually, everything except biceps was good. Even though it was a short workout, I'm happy with it. Next week, I'm going to stop the pulldowns and move to chins. I weigh less than 148 lbs so I should be able to do these now. Hopefully...in a perfect world...
This gym has been getting all kinds of new stuff. All of which is Hammer Strength. So every time I go there, everything is re-arranged because they're trying to find places for all of this stuff. So anyway, I'm doing my wimpy bicep curls and these 3 japanese dudes are arguing about where they're going to put things. It was pretty funny, but OMG! Find one place, put something there and then leave it alone!!!

I put the 40's in my hands for the Bench Press, got into position, and literally could not move the damn things!!! Good thing I have a sense of humor.

Without it, I wake up at about 12:30 and stay awake till about 3:30. My alarm goes off at 4:45 and I couldn't roll my sleep deprived carcass out of bed to save my life. It sucked big-time. With this stuff, I only stay awake for about 45 min before drifting back into blessed sleep.

Franji, when I first started doing squats, I was in a full torso brace and holding on to my kitchen counter for dear life. SLDL's were with a broomstick. In other words, I literally started at the bottom. The very bottom. That is why I never make fun of fat people working out or people working hard with light weights because that's all they can lift. I've been there and refuse to allow myself to forget.

Be careful of those ATF squats...could start to hurt your knees. I used to do ATF squats with 315 and now my knees crack and hurt like hell when I put 225 on the bar.

I know Futenma is a Marine station, but everyone goes to Kadena when they need to fly off island. Futenma does Freedom Bird flights too.

I did the ATF's just to see if I can do them and also to move past a sticking point. I want to be able to squat with a 45# plate on each side. Feel like a colossal wimpo because I can't do it yet.

Sleep: Tuesday's sleep sucked booty. Used melatonix instead of T-PM. Didn't work. Last night was solid though.

Got the assignment listing today. I thought that I would be going to one of the following places: Texas, California, or Alabama. But someone told me that joint-spouse assignments are selected ahead of everyone else. So the good folks at Randolph AFB in San Antonio know where I'm going, but I don't yet. And worse, I probably won't know for about another 3 months. This is irritating because I get back to the states around the same time school starts. I need make arrangements for my kiddos and can't do it till I know where the hell I'm being sent.

All I did was run. I will be doing a lot of running. Keeping my diet under control is not taking the fat off of my body. Lifting is not raising my metabolism enough to take the fat off of my body.
Okay, I'm exaggerating. When my size 7's start to get snug, I go into full panic mode. My 40th birthday present from the fates was 7 lbs. So far, I'm managed to give 2lbs of it back. But it's taken close to 2 months. So, I'll be doing alot of running. Especially since my husband has decided that I'm going running with him on a regular basis when he gets back from parts deployed.

On the MP3 player while I was running: A mix of Garbage from all 3 of their cds.

This is day 4 of being warm :clap: I hate cold weather so this warm air is making me quite the happy camper. No typhoons yet. Rainy season will probably be starting in another week or so. This means running on the treadmill for between 6-8 weeks. Typhoon season starts 01 May. We had quite a few typhoon days last year. It's always nice when I get time off without having to use my leave. Have 29 use or lose right now so they have to let me take some time off. Will probably be using most of it when I leave here though. Don't plan to reporting to my next duty station until I absolutely have to.
My MP3 is one of those Lyras with the smartcards. I have 3 loaded with different music. Gonna get another card and just put music from The Matrix, MI-2, Scorpian King, Tomb Raider, Spiderman & DD soundtracks. Should make for an energetic cardio session :D

Cardio: Not today. I forgot my running shoes at home and this girlie cannot run in otomix lifting shoes.

Sleep: Tylenol PM induced.

Been on the edge of a migraine for 2 days now. And because 1 troop just left, 1 is playing security police and another had a baby 2 weeks ago, I can't get the time off to just fill myself with pain medication and deal with the damn thing. Just loaded myself with Tylenol PM and plan to turn in no later than 9:00. If I'm lucky, I won't feel too bad tomorrow. But I'm not holding my breath.

As for produce, I haven't had a decent tomato since I've been here. The stuff they send from the states to the commissaries looks like EC did a mexican hat dance on them before they tossed it on the plane. The native stuff has an off taste which makes me wonder what they use to fertilize and whether or not they use pesticides. They also go bad within 3 days. When I get back to the states in Aug, I'm going to lose 10lbs in the 1st month just because I'll be living on fresh produce :D

This workout sucked :mad: The intensity just was not there. Too many people in the weight room. They just re-opened a smaller gym by my workplace, may check it out tomorrow. Gonna add a set to the lower body stuff too. 2 works for my upper but not my lower.
Realized that I don't enter my ab-work. Usually do a set of some kind of crunches before I move to a new exercise. So I did traditional crunches between the squats and SLDL's and between the DL's and Leg Exts. Reverse Crunches between Leg exts and Leg curls and between Leg curls and hyper-exts. Ususally whip out 2 sets of hanging leg raises at the end of the workout.

No. I'm worn out. As in sleepy.

Sucked. Can't get this right anymore.

Brief workout because I was pressed for time. Had to pull the late shift at work. Didn't get a chance to work arms. Don't think they'll shrivel up and die from one missed workout. They were doing some work in part of one of the 2 weight rooms so didn't have access to the assisted chin. Wanted to do BB militaries for the shoulders, but that was taken by a bunch of lifters with a tribe mentality.

I went walking on both Sat and Sun since my legs were pretty much fried after Friday's abuse. And it was absolutely gorgeous outside both nights. Sat was on the beach with a friend of mine. We both have an aversion to stupid movies so we spent a couple of hours walking. Sunday I walked my running path.
Started dieting seriously on Sunday. Been totally on for the past 3 days. The difference is that I'm now a woman on a mission. Henceforth, I will refer to the previous period as my "bulk cycle" :D It has ended. Now, I'm on a cutting cycle. Gee...rationalizing is fun!
Trying to swing a TDY to San Antonio in April for a few days. The Air Force Diagnostic Imaging Leadership Conference is going to be at Lackland and I wanna go. Badly. Of course this has nothing to do with the fact that the one who got away is stationed at Lackland. No siree! :angel: Perish the thought!

I am still in the inactive reserves. When you initially sign your DOD contract it is for 8 years. 4 of those years are spent on active duty, the other 4 are spent in the inactive reserves. Which means you dont have to do crap....you just need to maintain your issued uniforms in case you get recalled.

Now in my case I was 10 days away from fullfilling my inactive reserve commitment and I would have been out for good. But I have now been involuntarily extended so I have no choice...

Nope, not deployed. Just working and dealing with troops that have waaay too many personal issues going on. Been doing what I call maintenance training which is diana-speak for making it to the gym 2x a week and getting every body part worked at least once during that time. Had minor surgery 2 days ago and thought that I could work out around it. I couldn't but I may be able to run tonight. Gonna start hitting the weight room at 0400 again just to make sure that I get there.
Get your acquarius yet or am I gonna have go to the MPS and kick some booty?

Variation on the theme of same-oh, just lower weights because I wasn't able to make it to the gym consistently for a little while

Well, I went down on everything except biceps. But then I did all of the exercises really slow. Prolly could have lifted heavier, but since I hadn't been able to get a good quality workout in a couple of weeks, went with the lower weight and quality lifts instead.

Cardio: Been running 6.1 km in the evenings as a stress release. Leg day is going to be a joke, and a bad one at that because of these runs.

Diet: Pretty good. Craving curry like nobody's business.

Sleep: intermittent. Too much stress

Spiel: Supposed to find out where I'm gonna be assigned either any day now. I can't wait! Trying to get a port-call date of 02 Aug.
Too much stress at work. Two of my troops are fighting over men. It's so stupid. One thinks that she's a beauty queen and the other just sleeps with anyone male. Especially any male that's attracted to the "beauty queen." As you can imagine, this has created a little bit of tension in my dept. I sooo can't wait to leave here. Okay, done with my spiel. I have also had some problems with working the legs following running. One thing that can help is mixing in types of cardio that are not weight bearing, and place less amounts of stress on the legs. This includes things like cycling and using the eliptical trainer. I like to run one day, then do a less weight bearing type of cardio on the next. It is easier for me to do a leg day after the less weight bearing cardio, than after running. I do not think my body could handle running every day.

No workout today. That is because I got to spend a fun filled afternoon as a...urinalysis observer. That's right boys, girls and others. My entire afternoon was filled with watching women go whiz in cups. Got pegged at the last moment because the observer originally scheduled is being uncermonously tossed out of the military in about a week. Automatically disqualified her. My office was the closest one to the UA section and I was the only one around that had the qualifications so tag, I'm it! Anyhoo, by the time I got out of there it was too late to go to the gym. So I picked up the progeny and went to the curry joint. This stuff has 10 levels of heat and I'm up to level 5. Was trying to get to level 7 before I leave in Aug, but I'll be lucky to hit level 6.

Forgot to post tunage yesterday. I will therefore take this opportunity to pay my final respects to a great if controversial artist. RIP to the late Nina Simone.

I know how you feel about the front squats. I have trouble with them myself. Never feel quite right when performing them. Did you use a clean grip or cross your arms and let your shoulders support the bar?

To be totally honest, I have absolutely no idea what I was doing. I tried lifting my elbows up and crossing the arms. That didn't work 'cause I like my windpipe where it is. Tried just kinda holding the bar in place. That didn't work either. I want to do front squats! :mad: That's supposed to help with the ATF's and also bring the poundages on traditionals up. Or at least that's what I've been reading somewhere.

There are two types of front squats. A picture of a bodybuilding front squat is on the left. A picture of a weightlifting (olympic) front squat is on the right. The bar is supposed to be on the front of your upper shoulders in the bodybuilding front squat.

Hubby got back at 0300 hrs Fri from his deployment for 1 wk R&R. He's spent the last 2 days trying to do some kind of intervention. He wants me out of the weightroom. Not happening. Tells me that all I need to do is run :rolleyes:

H2H-Taking leave Tues & Wed. Getting a new troop in tomorrow afternoon so I'll drop in on Wed for a few min to meet her. The girl is a native Kimpanese speaker (read Kimpy's posts to get what I mean) so I had problems deciphering her e-mails at first. Still haggling for my replacement to come here NLT 15 June. But I'm not holding my breath 'cause the asshole over in Med Ops won't give him up. Says that I need to give up one of my techs. I gave him a fully trained MRI tech but that guy won't be here till March but the guy is still bitching like a girl.

That's right, the AF in their singular lack of deep and profound wisdom is sending me to the one part of the country that is nowhere to be found on my "dreamsheet", which will be henceforth be referred to as the "f*ck Diana over sheet" Travis AFB is a mere hour from Sacto. And a mere hour from SF.
It's not really that bad. I was just expecting to be sent to a place that was at least in the region of the country that I selected. I lived in Belmont for 1 year and Sacto for 6 so at least I'm somewhat familiar with the area.

Greetings & salutations
Due to my move and a very unsupportive spouse, I've been unable to drag my sorry can to the gym in a while. A looong while. But that is going to change this week! I will have 1.5 hours to work out and get back to work starting next week (lunch break) and am trying to put together a program that I can get done in that time.
I can knock out one of my old programs in about 45 minutes if I don't have to wait on anyone and no one interrupts me. But I don't want to take chances. So here is my tentative preliminary schedule:

Mon: Back, Biceps & Calves (everyone else does chest on Mon)
Tues: Cardio
Wed: Chest, Shoulders & Triceps
Thurs: Cardio again
Fri: Everything else :D Quads, Hams & Glutes

Comments anyone?

Maybe you could think about doing the cardio stuff after work instead of interspersing it with the weights on the lunch hours. (If I recall correctly you actually enjoy running and stuff :eek:.) Then you could do a four-day split instead of a three-day and you'd be SURE to have enough time to get all your scheduled stuff done - even if you had to wait for things. (And by 'things' I mean slow, slow people, of course.)

Both sets of movers (storage & Okinawa) arrived at my house on Friday. Can you say "cluster" boys and girls? I had no idea that I had so much crap!

Got to work and one of the 1st e-mails I get is one that says that the hospital gym is closed for re-modeling until further notice!!!:mad: grrr...
So now, I'm trying to get the cooperation of the spouse (okay, stop laughing) so I can drag my butt to the base gym immediately before or after work. If not, I'm turing my formal dining room into a home gym, husband be damned. Wish me luck folks.

Okay...update.
Couldn't get to the site for reasons I just as soon not go into right now. Oh, and I couldn't access from work. That's been fixed (finally).

What the workout's are looking like...crap!
The AF wants organizations to do "Flight Fitness" which means I can't go lift during lunch. So I'm running (only 2 miles) with members of my flight 2x a week and doing some "circuit training" every Friday. As of next week, I should be able to go lift before FF. Been maintaining so it will hopefully not be long before I'm back up to speed. Unless my muscle memory went the way of Alzheimers.

The consensus...I'm weak.

Diet: Back on track. More to come.

Sleep: 6 hrs. I get up early to study for promotion.

Attitude: I'm dieting...'nuff said!

Yesterday consisted of "circuit training" The Fit Monitors had a bunch of stations setup and we had to go through it 2x. One had squats (sans weight), push-ups, overhead presses, lunges, crunches, jump rope, jumping jacks, etc... I played full out and it kicked my butt. Beats the hell out of what they were doing before.

Cardio: see above
Diet: yep, it's all good.
Sleep: good
Attitude: good in spite of diet. I've gone below the 134# mark so it's all good.

It's amazing how my food priorities (for lack of a better term) have clarified with my cutting diet. What I'm doing right now is something that worked a long time ago. But I quit doing it because I allowed other people's views to change what was working for me. Basically, I allow myself a moderate amount of starches early in the day and none after about 2:00 pm. Lots of raw fruits and vegs as well as portion control. I small cheat meal (emphasis on small) every three days or so and a whole cheat day on Sat.
The thing with cheat days is that I don't want to waste them on any ole thing. That's when I cook the stuff I really like such as curry or...curry! Seriously though, am I the only one who doesn't eat for the sake of eating on cheat days?

Okay, where was I...not at the base gym. The AF fitness program cause a muscle imbalance in my legs that:
a. is causing problems with my knee
and...
only weight lifting will fix!!! Well, according to the Physical Therapist anyway.
In short, back in the weightroom! :D

Legs:
Leg Press - 3x20@300#
Calve Raises on Leg Press Machine - 3x20@300
SLDL - 3x15@60 :( Need to go way up on that
Hyperextensions - 3x15@10
Some standing inner thigh thingy - 20@40, 20@60, 20@70 (will explain later)
Seated Calves - 3x15@90

Okay, the PT said that I need to do to inner thigh thingys because my strength there is adversly proportional to my outer thigh strength. I'm not allowed to do Leg Extensions and the Lying leg curl machine. I will also have to do lunges.

Cardio: That's out
Diet: Not bad, but I still could lose some fat

Attitude: Outstanding! The people I work with now are so much better than the clowns I had to deal with in Okinawa. Night and day!
