View Full Version : protein shakes
I just have a quick question about protein. Does taking protein after a workout or before sleep on days of workouts actually help recover muscle tissue and make your msucles heal a bit quicker and rapider or does it just add a high amount of protein and minor carbs and fat to your body. Or does it do both
If this question has been answered already please link me to it, sorry.
Thanx

Protein is an essential to the body, and will be used in muscle recovery and repair as well as many other processes in the body. By taking in a protein shake pre/post workout you are providing the body with an easily digestable and bioavailable source of protein.
The idea behind drinking a protein shake before bed is to provide the body with a sustained release of aminos throughout the night. This is why you would want to use a slow digesting protein before bed, and pre/post workout you would want a fast digesting protein.
Protein is needed on off days as well as training days, and I would recommend just spreading your protein intake out over the course of the day. Most of your protein should come from whole food sources, and use shakes pre/post workout and they can also be used to boost your protein intake throughout the day.

Would Optimum nutrition pro-complex be a good protein shake to take right before bed?

If you are looking for a blended protein then I would chose one that contains casein, which Pro-Complex does not, as mentioned by Pusher.
At Large Nutrition offers a blended protein (Nitrean) at a good price, that you might take a look at (www.atlargenutrition.com), if you are looking for a protein blend.

:( Unfortunatly, I already purchased the pro-complex. While I think its good alone, I did assume it had casein. Guess I should read more carefully nextime.
I suppose I could always add cot cheese to my pre-bed shake. How a bout Nat pb? Will that slow things down a little?
(sorry to get thread off track)

The fat from the peanut butter will help to slow the digestion of the shake, and you can also mix it using milk, which contains casein. Although keep an eye on total calories, since 1 serving of protein, a cup or two of milk, and natural peanut butter can turn your night time shake into a high calorie shake. This could be good or bad depending on your current goals.:)
