I've dabbled in weight lifting off and on for a while. Some in high school, and then got pretty regular with it in college, but didn't pour myself into it. I worked out fairly hard, but didn't pay much attention to what I ate and too no supplements at all.
Now I'm 29 and starting to work out regularly again. I still have to make an effort at watching what I eat (lay off the sweets and the empty carbs, man!) but I'd like to start taking some Protein I think.
Do I just walk into GNC and get some Designer Pro Protein or something like that and take a few scoops a day? Don't start telling me a big list of stuff to grab, because my budget won't handle that. I'm just wanting to start taking something that will help me a little in my lifting to get a little bigger.
When I work out seriously for a while, I gain strength, but not much size. It always frustrated me when I saw guys who couldn't bench near my Max, but had bigger chests than I did. I want to some size to go along with it.
So...for a beginner...what do you suggest?

Well.. You should consume Whey protein after your workout... and that is the only time you should have a protein shake.. the rest of your meals should be whole foods and try to aim for 1g of protein / lb of Body Weight.
I suggest that you get Optimum Nutrition Whey, Choc. Flavour.
that and a multi vit. is basically all you need.. you can look into creatine if you want.. but IMO its not needed.
P.S. GNC is way overpriced. Try to find a better source.

Is GNC still overpriced even with a gold card?

I would recommend taking in a protein supplement post workout along with some high carbs (dextrose, maltodextrin, white bread, bagels, etc.), which will help restore muscle glycogen stores and help with muscle recovery and repair.
The amount of protein that you need to get from supplements will depend on how much you are taking in through whole foods. You want to shoot for ~1g of protein per lb. of bodyweight.
I have been using Nitrean from www.atlargenutrition.com and I have been satisfied with it, especially since it has a good flavor and is competively priced. I personally like the chocolate flavor.:)

Thanks for the help, guys.
I'm going to be going to GNC anyway this afternoon. That's why the questions, but it might be best for me to wait and either go with Optimum Nutrition or some Nitrean.
I'm assuming the quality of these proteins is better than most stuff at GNC?

I have found no reason to doubt the quality of the product, and I think you will find the prices are much better when ordering online.

Look, skip the GNC and go to our website and order some Opticen or Nitrean. Our proprietary protein matrix is (in our opinion) superior to the other product you mentioned for several reasons. Read the blurb on the site about the products for the reason.
Our products are significantly cheaper than anything of comparable quality you will find at GNC. Why would you want to waste you money?

I don't want to waste my $$. That's why I came here asking Q's.
Thanks for the help. I may ask something again later...

chris-
So what's the main difference between Opticen and Nitrean? Is it just the amount of protein? Opticen seems to have about double the protein for the same price. What am I missing? What would you rec?

Opticean is a meal replacement powder (MRP), so it can be used as a replacement for a meal, where as Nitrean is a protein supplement.
If you take a look at the serving size you will notice that one serving of Opticean is 3 scoops (90g), and one serving of Nitrean is 1 scoop (30g). If you are looking for a versatile protein supplement I would recommend Nitrean, since it can be used in various ways (post workout, boosting daily protein intake, etc.).

Right on. But I'd suggest more than one protein shake per day, unless you just have a stellar diet. I've gotta down at least 2-3 per day to make up for the ****ty food I get from the school cafeteria here.
