View Full Version : Difference between Olive Oil and Vegetable(Corn Oil)

I was just curious as what the difference of taking say a Tablespoon of Corn Oil versus a Tablespoon of Olive Oil would be? They both contain ~14g of fat and ~2g of which are saturated. They both 'seem' to be very similar to me.

corn oil is quite high in omega-6 which could be negative. also olive oil (virgin at least) is more naturally extracted which could have positive health benefits although i doubt it is much

As you can see from above, even though the total fat content is similar, the actual fatty acid content is quite different. Olive oil is high in omega-9s (oleic acid) where as vegetable oil contains a high amount of omega-6s (alpha linoleic acid).

Most people get plenty of omega-6s, so using vegetable oil would only further increase the ratio of n-6 to n-3 fats. Olive oil will not have any effect on the above mentioned ratio, and is also a good source of anti-oxidants.
