Besides only losing appox 1.5 lbs/week, what other steps would people take to prevent muscle catabolism during cutting?

maybe drop it to no more than 1lb per week, and make sure you keep protien intake high. also, track your cals religiously.

bodyweight in protein, maybe a little more

I agree just make a 500 cal deficit and that should work well.

Ight, thas what ive done.. droped 300 cals from my maintain, lost 2 lbs on ym 2nd week of the cut.. if i lose another 2 lbs this week thne i may up it by 100 more cals. I also count cals and my ratios good.. i actually added 2 extra reps to my squats this leg day.. so that was a good thing/surprise :)

Strength training is the singlemost important anti-catabolic considieration.
