View Full Version : Bah, I suck at bulking

So after 3 years of this lifting stuff I finally sat down, broke out a notebook for something other than training, and started a diet log, sorta. Imagine my surprise when I realized that since I've been eating clean, I've never ate more than 3000cals, even when I thought I was bulking for my PH cycle (I'm 6'2" floating around 200lbs currently).

Nowadays, on an "average" day I'm barely eating 2500. Since I've recently been trying to cut down a little, no big deal, maybe even too many cals. I do know that this amount with little cheating and 2-3 days of cardio was making the pants fit looser, but nowhere near seeing my abs.

But now I'm contemplating trying bulking again, this time the right way. Partly because I'm starting DC training in a few weeks, partly because being the "big" guy was always my goal (quickly becoming a fantasy). I got my working diet to just under 3500 cals, 49% protein 37% carbs, 14% fat. Not sure this is enough cals, carbs, or fat. I was originally shooting for 4000 cals. The only way I can do this is to eat even more peanuts/eggs than I already will be (1/2 cup and 3 xlg, respectively), or start drinking flax oil by the glass. I'm a pretty picky eater, and everything clean I will eat I already am. Would it matter how much I ate of one thing as long as my ratios are good? What's a "good" ratio to shoot for anyway? Cals? I have it in my head that bw x 20 is the ultimate bulk. On a bulking diet like this, is one cheat meal a week (often pizza) ok to "shock" the body or am I gonna be in enough trouble?

If you really want to gain weight, don't worry about eating too clean. Try to stay away from the high GI carbs (except pre/post workout) but besides that, eat what you can. Hamburgers, pizza, tacos, they're all good stuff for bulking

I think yiou can bulk clean. What are you eating? It shouldn't be that hard. I drink more milk. Snack on cottage cheese. Add a bowl of pasta or rice. Maybe extra serving of meat.
I don't think it should be hard and I don't think you need to resort to eating bad. But you know yourself better.

I was drinking about 1/2 gallon per day of whole milk during my bulk and it definitely helped.

ummmm pizza dough and hamburger buns are totally high GI. Not saying that's a bad thing on a bulk, but you contradicted yourself.

Yeah, I think you're right. I actually meant to say stay away from too many simple sugars

Unless you are eating just pizza dough or hamburger buns then it will not matter. When you look at the meal as a whole the GI would be lower, due to the fat and protein that is contained in pizza and hamburgers.

What to do if you're lactose intolerant like me? All y'all who can drink milk with impunity, I'm jealous. =P

Bulking is so damn easy. I can never see why people have trouble with it. Bulk old school style. TONS of clean carbs, high protein, and moderate amounts of only healthy fats.

Bulking being easy depends on your metabolism. For me, cutting is extremely easy. I can lose about 15 lbs in a matter of weeks just by cutting out weight gainer and whole milk from my diet. The problem for me is not cutting TOO fast.

Bulking on the other hand is very hard with a metabolism like mine, I can either try to eat clean, and spend my entire day struggling to eat, or I can resort to weight gainers filled with sugar that make me gain more fat than I would like. It's tough!

Best things for me are milk(or chocolate milk), pb sandwiches(or just Table spoons of it) and bagels are good too all for some easy calories.

All I know is I can eat 4000 cals a day without effort. Imagine what I'd get if I was forcefeeding myself.

Nobody has given an example of a good bulking diet yet so here's a good example with clean foods,

8 am
6 whole eggs, (100 cals, 21 gms protein, 30g fats)
150g oatmeal, (600 cal, 10gms fat, 112gms carbs)
1 slice wheat toast (70 cals, 1 gms fat, 13 gms carbs, 3 gms protein)
1 tablespoon peanut butter (95 cals, 8 gms fat, 3.5 carbs, 4 gms protein)

10am
100g chicken breast (165 cals, 4gms fat, 32 gms protein)
100g steak (150 cals, 23 gms protein, 5 gms fat)
100g rice, dry weight (375 cals, 80gms carbs)
35g beans (120 cals, 7.5 gms protein, 25 carbs)

Noon
100g chicken breast (165 cals, 4gms fat, 32 gms protein)
100g steak (150 cals, 23 gms protein, 5 gms fat)
30g mushrooms (10 cals, 1 gm carbs)
1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil (120 cals, 13.5 gms fat)
150gms Assorted veggies (100 cals, 20 gms carbs, 5 gms protein)

2pm
150g tuna (200 cals, 5gms fat, 35 gms protein)
3 whole eggs (155 cals, 15gms fat, 18 gms protein)
50 grams carrots (20 cals, 5 gms carbs)
75g rice (270 cals, 60 gms carbs)
50g peas (170 cals, fat 1 gm, protein 13gms, 30 gms carbs)

4pm
N-Large2 with 50g MaltoDextrine :
[ MaltoDextrine (185 cals, 47 gms carbs) and N-large (600 cals, 6 gms fat, 52 gms protein, 86 gms carbs) ]

5pm
Workout

Post workout
100g Protein Shake - NO carbs in it!!!!(should be a blend, Whey Isolate/Egg/Casien seems to work good)

8pm
100g chicken (165 cals, 4gms fat, 32 gms)
100g fish (125 cals, 3gms fat, 25 gms)
150g Potato (120 cals, 127 gms carbs, 3 gms protein)
16oz Skim Milk (200 cals, 5 gms fat, 24gms carbs, 16 gms protein)

Just before bed
400g steak (600 cals, 92 gms protein, 20gms fat)
2 whole eggs (155 cals, 10gms fat, 12 gms protein)
2 tablespoons Hemp oil(28grams of fat, 252 cals)

TOTAL
5,500 cals
522 gms protein
530 gms carbs

Again, this is only an example and could be changed up a number of ways. But a good starting point on a bulker no doubt. Thought that may help a few bros.

Some of these guys are having trouble choking down enough food to bulk so IMO a 5500 cal diet with a rediculous amount of protein is unrealistic. Unless one is juicing that kind of protein is completely unnecessary.

Props for giving him something to work with, the main reason nobody else did is because we see dozens of threads just like this one where newbies are asking for us to spell it out for them and tell them exactly what and when to eat.

ok I'm going to use an extreme to make a point.

Let's say I mixed some dextrose with some flax oil and some casein powder. Would that actually make the dextrose lower GI? It may slow the digestion, but the dextrose will still be 140 GI.

I got'cha bro. I was a natural for 7 years. We each make our own roads bro.

And Saint Patrick, I got that diet in my word file just for such occassions like this. It's come in handy on other boards as well.

This is the only part natural, part juicer site I've ever been on so it's easy to slip my mind that some of these guys do go all natural. Props to the fellas that do. I don't judge anyone anyway. I just help when and where I can.
