Okay  I'm 20 and I don't know the proper way to make a Soft Boiled or Hard Boiled egg.

Can someone tell me how long to boil each for *wanted* results?

hard boiled should take about 5 min in boiling water

soft boiled (ie. runny yolk) will take about 3 min or so.

It's actually even more simple than that for hard-boiled. Just put the eggs in an uncovered pot with enough water so that it covers the eggs. Bring the water to a boil and then turn the burner off and cover the pot. Let the water cool in the pot (~1 hour), then take the eggs out and peel the shells off. This saves both time and gas/electricity. As Manveet said, it should take between 3-5 minutes to bring the water to a boil.

I don't cook soft-boiled eggs (what's the point?) so I'm not really sure how to do that.
