OK kids my Dr recommended that I take 1,500 mg of L-Lysine twice a day. She said it would help with my immune system since I keep getting a viral URI. Will this really help? What the hell does it actually do?

Thats great, but no cold sores for me, but I guess I'll keep taking the stuff. My theory is that it can't hurt, right?

considering the number of supps proven to boost immune function I think you could save money by using one of them

i'd do what your doctor says, haha. alls i know is, taking tons of "natural" compounds, such as vitamin B, it can have "medicine-like" effects. must be something about lysine and how it works w/ the immune system, but not how another supp which boosts teh immune system another way (in other words, maybe you should do what your doctor says, and take lysine and nothing else in your situation)

She said to keep taking my multi and to add L-lysine, I'm doing it and I feel better, so I'm going to keep at it, I was just wondering if anyone knew what it was really supposed to do or help is all?

I can't tell you exactly how it works, but I take it too, with good results. When I do catch a cold, which is seldom, the symptoms are not bad and it doesn't last long. It definitely suppresses the cold sore virus, and there is also some connection with joint pain. I know that when I ran out of L-Lysine a few months ago, my knees started bothering me a lot more than usual, and when I found out that L-Lysine could help I went back on it and by the time a week or so had passed the unusual pain had cleared up.
