View Full Version : should bodyfat % factor into maintenance calorie formulas?

None of the maintenance calorie formulas I see use it as a factor, why not? Wouldn't bodyfat % affect your metabolism and therefore your maintenance level of calories?

Yes it certainly does. However those formulas are very general and are not meant to give you an exact number; just a rough starting point.

so for any given formula, would higher bodyfat % increase or decrease the final number?

I'm not sure, but these formulas are more or less just guidelines. The true test is how your own body reacts. I'd just pick a starting point and assess how your weight fluctuates from there.

One pound of fat burns 2 calories per hour whereas one pound of muscle burns 75 calories per hour <i think>. Sooooo, higher bodyfat (given the same weight) would less calories burnt.
