This doesn't matter at all for anything, but if an untrained individual used the keto diet and just started weight lifting smart, sleeping enough, etc, would it be possible for him to gain any muscle (say he eats right at maintenance and does HIIT)?

If he was just starting out, yes, a meager amount.

a TKC or CKD would be better
but I believe a balanced diet is best for optimal health and performance
and I also don't think Keto is of any benefit unless you have problems controlling cravings

I say it is easier to maintain muscle. You can gain some but we are talking a very very small amount if any.

It's not the most ideal diet for a bulking period. You'd be better off eating a balanced diet. Why would you want to bulk on a keto anyway? I go nuts when I cut doing a keto-style diet...couldn't imagine extending it to a bulk, hehe.

i gained both weight and strength the first 4 weeks on keto. i also did not count calories or macros so i have no doubt i was consuming way over maintenance. make of that what you will, but anything is possible. at least in my world.
