View Full Version : Don't wanna break my back!
I notice that when I do squats and Deadlifts I use my back... Well the guys I work out with say that but my back doesn't really hurt... My back does hurt when I run a mile though the day after I do my squats or deadlifts. If I continue like this could my break get a serious injury? Why does my back hurt when I am running? Is there anything I can do to try to stop using my back? I try but I keep tending to using it again and again! I don't want to be in a wheelchair at 20 so any help is appreciated.

Don't worry about it. Your back hurts the day after because its fatigued, and the spinal erectors get a beating just keep the spine, err, erect, while running.
You are supposed to use your back while doing a deadlift or squat. the reason your back hurts later on is becuase it would still be tired from working out and while you run you are bouncing up and down. To fix that strengthing your abs might help.
All my friends tell em to use my legs when doing sqauts and dlifts so I try never to use my back... Thanks for clearing most of that up for me I thought I had a back problem because it hurt after I ran...

Using your back in those lifts is inevitable. If you didn't you would fall forward. :D

A lot of times excessive fatigue in a muscle will elicit some kind of stiffness/soreness in the muscle being overloaded.

You could always have someone check your form as well if it becomes a big problem. The first time I did deadlifts I must have done them incorrectly, but for nearly a week my lower back was sore. It'd hurt to lean over; I couldn't do anything.
Well I don't think I am killing myself really as the pain hurts maybe 1 day and it doesn't hurt unless I run as I said... It hurts maybe 10 seconds after I do the excercise but that's always normal in any excercise...

Than your muscles are just sore from the damage you did to the muscle fibers.

Is that a good thing?

You shouldent have started that Rebellion all those years ago.
Anyway, I have found that it feels as if I am using my back more in SLDL's than in deadlifts. Is this normal, or do I have a problem with my form possibly?

I'd guess it might be something with your form. I was taught to use your butt to lower the weight instead of your back if that makes any sense.
When you lower the weight stick your butt out; that'll lower the weight.
Get it? ( I suck at explaing myself )

What MA was trying to convey was that during the lift you want to keep the back arched not rounded. Rounding of the vertabre will most likely result in the loading of the ligaments of the spine.
Keep the back arched by sticking your butt out. This will actually rotate the pelvis into a anterior pelvic tilt.
MA, that butt thing really works... I saw this kid stick his butt out when doing squats and I was like wtf... He squatted the most in our class at 365x4, I do a measily 225x4 -_- (probably one of the lowest if not the lowest on this forum)
I am going to try that butt thing and hopefully I can see if it helps and increases the weight I can do... I am so far happy wiht my results 5 weeks ago I did 195 squat 1 time. Good for me =)

Hey man, you have to start somewhere. I've said this before, but I started squatting with 95lbs. :)
what do you squat now? 500?

LOL. Not even close. I only weigh about 165 - 170. But most I've ever done was 270 x 5. And that's pretty impressive for myself; seeing as how I used to hate doing squats. Just the idea of them gets me wheazy. LOL. ;)
I weigh 200 like 25% bf though, not muscle -_-
I squat 275 1 time max... Maybe in 2 months I will be where you are now, or maybe I will be where you are in 2-3 weeks depending on how fast I improve... My gaol is to do 355 1 time before Christmas, and I feel it is 100% possible as I went up 80 pounds in ym max in 5 weeks... So I have like almost three months to increase by another 80 pounds, it wont be a problem at all!

Just figure out how many weeks from now until Christmas. And than figure out how much weight you should add each week to get to 335. So each week you will have a new goal; and your 'big' goal will most likely be more acheivable(sp?).
yea, that will work I suppose... Also I see a lot of people saying sp... what the heck does that mean?
