You might be overtraining a bit. Not sure; but be careful not to overtrain. Don't feel bad if you're too sore or too tired to hit the weights. It'll do you good.

Thanks for the support!

I feel much stronger, lost some fat, and gained some muscle already. It's amazing how the body responds to weight training. I will be posting another pic by the end of the month that will hopefully show some progress I've made.

Only do arms once a week. IMO the best way to split it would be to do biceps with your back and triceps with your chest and shoulders.

Fart Barker
10-02-2001, 05:47 PM
give or take....

350 carbs
200 protein
100 fat

I initially started out taking all kinds of crap but have narrowed it down to just whey protein.

I started taking a couple more supplements again. I need to stick with this current program until at least my next photo shoot. That way I'll know if it's working or not.
1. whey protein
2. creatine
3. ephedrine
4. zinc
5. melatonin

I'm changing my routine a little too.
Monday - arms
Tuesday - back & shoulders
Wednesday - legs
Thursday - chest
Friday - arms

you're training your arms 4x a week on that routine you know? not necessarily a bad thing, but that kind of workload usually takes time to work into and isn't really suitable for a beginner...but as a beginner you can probably grow on anything...

Garza
10-09-2001, 11:19 AM
Good luck.

No offense but you have shown two different splits and they both absolutley suck. Here is a few good splits:

Mon back, bicep, calves
Tues Chest triceips abs
Thurs shoulders traps calves
Fri Legs abs

That is what I follow, you don't overtrain with it.

Or

Monday Chest, abs
Tuesday Back, cavles
Wenesday Shoulders, traps
Thursday Arms, calves
Friday Legs, abs

This way you aren't in the gym nearly as long, I just pulled the last oen out of my ass, but I would say it would work.

Garza
10-09-2001, 11:21 AM
Do not train arms before training chest or back. If you train triceps before chest, your chest will not get a good workout. If you train biceps first, back will not be as strong.

Fart Barker

starting next week I will be lifting 4 days instead of five, something like this...

we- legs
th- back & shoulders

Mystic Eric
10-12-2001, 05:06 PM
try not to go 4 days in a row. it's taxing on your nervous and immune system, and could lead to overtraining.

instead, but a day off inbetween tuesday and wednesday

you're doing great man. keep it up.

and you should probably do squats before anything else unless you're trying to pre-exhaust but at your stage, i'd just stick with the basics and squat first in your leg workout.

you can also drop the volume as well. go intense for lower volume.

Well, that's the end of the first phase of my physique transformation. I didn't do quite as well as I had hoped. My number 1 goal was to quit smoking and that didn't quite happen. Better luck next time I suppose. My supplement routine was all over the place but I did stick with the whey, ECA, and creatine for the most part. My bodyweight went up 5 pounds. My strength improved substantially. Now if I could get a handle on my diet I think I can see much more improvement over the next phase. Damn you Krispy Kreme! Chest and waist measurements remained about the same while my arms gained an inch, up over 16 now. Next stop... 17" :)

And now for phase 2.....

I will continue working the major muscle groups once a week on a Monday, Wednesday, Friday routine. I'll be supplementing with the ECA pre-workout and a protein shake with creatine during workouts. Zinc and Niacin at night. As for my diet, let's just say I'll try to eat fewer donuts and drink fewer sodas. I'll take this phase all the way up to December 22nd and probably take a week off.

Thanks for the support, it really helps to hear encouraging words like that.

Today, my workout partner/neighbor and I finally got around to sanding the rust off of his power rack that was sitting in his back yard. We painted it and bought a new piece of plywood for the platform. Now we can now do chins and it will make squatting safer too.

The Iron never lies to you. You can walk outside and listen to all kinds of talk, get told that you're a god or a total bastard. The Iron will always kick you the real deal. The Iron is the great reference point, the all-knowing perspective giver. Always there like a beacon in the pitch black. I have found the Iron to be my greatest friend. It never freaks out on me, never runs. Friends may come and go. But two hundred pounds is always two hundred pounds.

I WEIGH 209 POUNDS

Sleep
Been getting some good sleep lately, on average about 6 hours a night (I know I need more but it ain't gonna happen) and I've been sleeping straight through, which is rather unusual for me. No sleep aids either.

Diet
Peanut butter and apple butter sandwiches reigned supreme this week followed closely by chocolate chip granola bars. Mountain Dew was consumed twice daily. I ate a couple big stacks of pancakes complete with syrup and ass-loads of butter. I ate some other stuff too but can't remember what it was.

Supplements
100-150 grams whey per day. Slim-Fast post-workouts. Creatine and ECA pre-workout. 50mg zinc before I lay me down to sleep :)

Training
My strength has gone up considerably. I maxed out on bench at 245 which is 30 lbs less than my all-time best of 275 (about 10 years ago I think). Started doing deadlifts this week too; might go with these every other week. Although I'm only recording actual work sets in my journal, I've been doing about 30 to 45 minutes of warm-up exercises prior, consisting of stretching, mind-control tricks on the iron, ab work, hopping around, making weird noises, spewing methane gas, and various other forms of peculiar primate behavior.

Fart Barker's Best...

BB SQUAT 225 X 6
DEADLIFT 185 X 10

Good work Fart.

What sources are you getting your training and diet info from. eg. fitness/bb magazines, doctors, books, the forums, all of the priors mentioned?

Have you lifted before Fart?

Finally, get more sleep!!! If you're sleeping a straight 6 hours a night that is awesome. I drink so much water it just doesn't happen, but I do get about 8 hours altogether. If you can't get more than 6, try to nap in the day for a couple hours, preferably after your workout. Growth hormone is only released when you sleep.

Finally, finally, chug back tonnes of water.

Orange!!! I didn't know 31 was old? :disagree:

I'd love a power rack. My neighbor has one but I'm on my own now. I almost failed on the 9th rep of my 4th set; it took everything I had to get that one up.

I believe the fat I lost was mainly due to the fact that I went directly from couch potato to Monday thru Friday Weightlifter. A lot of those workouts were done with my neighbor and were very gruelling. I was hungry all the time.

Currently, I am training alone and have cut the volume back drastically. Here's what I'm doing this week...

Monday - 5 sets Bench Press
Tuesday - 5 sets Bent Over Row
Wednesday - 5 sets Full Squat
Thursday - 5 sets Overhead Press
Friday - 5 sets Barbell Curl

My diet is still far from perfect. I probably eat worse than anyone on this or any other board. Last night for supper I ate sausage and biscuits drowned in honey butter with some grape jam. The biggest difference in my diet has been the fact that I no longer overeat. I have learned to stop way before I'm full.

I also think the whey protein helps too. I have some in the morning and sip on about 40 grams in the evening. I'm still about 20% fat bastard but that's changing, slowly but surely.

Also, these are the supps I'm taking now...

Multivitamin/mineral tablets
Whey Protein
Slim-Fast

I also don't do any cardio because I believe it kills muscle and makes you hold onto fat. But that's just my opinion.

Since I'm not really contributing very much to this thing on a daily basis I'll start updating it at the end of every week like this...

11/19 - BENCH - 165 X 9 - 175 X 9 - 205 X 5 - 185 X 9 - 165 X 7

11/20 - ROWS - 135 X 9 - 155 X 8 - 175 X 4 - 135 X 9 - 135 X 9

11/26 - S - 215 - 5 5 5 5 5

11/28 - B - 215 - 5 5 5 3 4

11/30 - R - 165 - 5 5 5 5 5

squat, bench, row - plan was 5 sets of 5

I had originally planned on doing deads instead of rows but I changed my mind. I might do this routine this week as well but I'll probably bump the weight up a little.

My diet was pathetic once again but that's nothing new. On a positive note, I am getting stronger. I stopped taking the whey protein. Just typing the word whey makes me wanna puke.

This week was just about a total loss. I screwed around with different rep schemes and exercises. I bought a combo bar that I can use for biceps and triceps. I also bought an ab wheel and exercise ball.

I tried out DelphiDoc's Workout Log program that he wrote and it's pretty cool. You can keep track of every lift you do and it even generates graph reports. Then I downloaded a program called Iron Warrior Training Log which is like DelphiDoc's program on steroids but it'll cost ya 32 bucks.

Most of what I did this week was crappola but here's what I got down yesterday and today...

12/07 - EZ Bar Curls - 60 * ( 13 + 15 + 12 + 11 + 8 ) = 3540

12/08 - DB Laterals - 50 * ( 11 + 12 + 12 + 10 + 10 ) = 2750

How's the ab roller treatin' ya? I used one for awhile but it caused lower back strain. I also chickened out on it when it made my inguinal areas sore. Knowing what people go through after hernia repairs I decided to stop for awhile. I keep wanting to try it out again to see if I still get sore *down there*.

Yeah, I did the hypers (should've got my wife to take a picture of that one), and some crunches too. I usually do some sort of midsection work as a warm up.

Still lookin for that power rack. I'm sure I can find an Olympic rack but since I've got 350 lbs of standard weights I've got to find a rack that'll fit the shorter standard bar. Maybe next year. I figure this bench will hold about 300 (still got a ways to go) safely and doing the squats with it isn't that difficult. It's the benching that I've got to watch.

I ordered my power cage Monday and I should be able to pick it up next week. I also ordered a flat bench and a 7 foot standard bar. I'm so excited I can barely contain myself.

I ate a bunch of crap this week, didn't drink enough water, and smoked entirely too much. Didn't eat too many donuts but apple fritter consumption was way up.

I'm probably gonna start wearing a belt when I go heavy on the deads and squats so my poundages should go up a little. When I started lifting in August I had a 38 inch waist and now it's damn near 40 inches. I was kinda hoping that I'd have a 36 by now. I wonder if not wearing a belt has anything to do with it.

Yeah, I ordered it from MAC. I don't think they stock anything but it doesn't take that long to make. My power cage was actually being painted yesterday and I could've probably picked it up last night but the bar I ordered wasn't in yet. The cage wouldn't have done me any good with the 6 foot bar I've got right now. The lady told me maybe next Wednesday. The holidays are delaying everything too.

But hey, I've got me a brand-spankin-new power cage now, a new bar, and a new bench. I was going to take the whole week off but went ahead and lifted some today. My diet didn't suck too bad this week. Started drinking the whey again today and started taking the zinc again in addition to the multivitamin I already take.

Last year when I started all this I had set some lame-ass goals for myself that I really didn't accomplish (I lost some fat and put on some muscle, so what, it wasn't that dramatic) so for this year my one and only goal is to bench 300 for reps. Current max is 255. I'm gonna bench 300. 300, I will bench.

Captain, thanks for the encouraging words. :D

The assumption is not immaterially experimental, and the available data is not near a general consensus. It is intuitively clear that an objective is not carelessly temporal.

On the grounds that a decidedly overall rejection was not completed, the joint partnership of the uniform emphasis was not in the vicinity of the clear conclusion, but inasmuch as the current view in the area of the potential improvement was not based upon a potential improvement, a beneficially corresponding constraint was known to be discontinued. This is in substantial agreement with the fact that the qualitative effectiveness is giving rise to the renewed emphasis.

Beware the wrath of a quiet man.

I should have known this when I started posting intensity data. The program I'm using to log my workouts computes intensity levels, but the more data it gets, the intensity levels from the previous workouts change. Hence, the more data it gets, the more accurate the readings. That being said, I will no longer waste my time with it.

Pretty good workout. I actually broke a sweat. I've been bringing my own lunch (turkey sandwiches and granola bars) to work the last couple of days. I'll probably trim up a little as a result. I also drove by the donut shop without stopping for two days in a row. Good for me, woohoo!
