Any form of exercise is a form of cardio.

What did he die of? hyponatremia (too much water)? heart problems related to a prexisting condition?

The 56+ mile Comrades Marathon is probably the largest major ultramarathon event. Of the 10,000 runners participating in the event, there are an average of about 3 deaths, usually related to hyponatremia or prexisting medical conditions. One study predicted that if ultramarathon events were banned, then the annual risk of sudden death in the group of ultramarathon runners would approximately triple. The running saves lives by improving the health in this group with prexisting medical conditions.

Note that people die while weight training and doing other forms of exercise as well. One of the most common causes of death while weight training is asphyxia from barbell compression of the neck or chest while bench pressing without a spotter.
