I have done a search and read up. I just need some opinions on this. I tend to workout in the a.m. so I take a pre-WO shake as my first meal. It seems that the only time to truly take advantage of whey's fast absorbing properties would be first thing in the morning (empty stomach). So my Q is, b/c I work out in the mornings will whey be more beneficial to me than a blend in my pre-WO shake to increase the pool of amino acids as opposed to all other times when there is some food in the digestive tract thus a blend would make more sense.

As I have stated before, the timing of your protein shakes really isn't that important. What is most important is that you consume enough in the day.

In theory, the very first thing in the morning, a whey shake mixed with water would be the best pre-workout protein to take due to its quick absorbtion (on a TRULY empty stomach).

I workout first thing in the morning too. About half hour before my workout I drink a shake made of 1 scoop of whey, about 40g of dextrose and 1 teaspoon of creatine. about 30-40 minutes after the workout I have breakfast.

wouldn't you be at a greater benefit to take dextrose post workout? as that is when your body's insulin levels are depleted and you are in the greatest need of simple sugars (dextrose and maltodexin)?

Not to stray too much from the original subject but after an 8-12 hr fast, last meal of the day to next breakfast, isn't the stomach empty? I have read that gastric emtying occurs (depending on the food) in 3-8 hrs. If that is the case then whey with water because the stomach would be emty, right? On another note, there is whey in the blends, is its absorption negatively affected by the casein (like in milk)?

to empty the stomach only takes 1-4 hours depending on a few factors...the chime (what food turns into) can stay in your intestings for quite a long time...90 hours isn't unheard of.
Granted most of the nutrients are extracted in the small intestines and the large are mostly for extracting water
