I didn't see anyone post this so I'll go ahead.

Start Date: May 21st (Today)
End Date: August 1st

The person with the largest increase in their bench wins ...

My current best max is 235 and since that's pathetic that puts me at a big advantage.

Are we doing 1 rep max or can we pick the rep range like the squat contest?
If we are doing strictly 1 rep max put me in at 215lbs X 1.
If the rep range doesn't matter put me in at 200lbs X 6.

265x1 (Went down from my previous best of 270, so do you want me to use 265 which is what I'm doing now or 270 which I did about a month and a half ago?)

I'll do this again. My 1rm before today was 275 (I did 275 x2 so I don't know what it is now. I'd guess 5 more lbs)

is that a typo?
or can you honestly only do 1 rep at 215 yet you can do 6 @ 200?
I mean I could believe 1@215 and 2@200, but 6?

Nope that isn't a typo. I can do 2 at 215 though as of my last workout and 6 at 200, I think I can probably get 7 at 200 now, well, I'm gonna try next workout. Just so you can get an idea, my last bench session went like
195 X 8, 210 X 4, 215 X 2

ahhh!!! I gotcha now:)
Your setup isn't to good for figuring out a 1rm (IMHO), your basically busting your nut before you get to your max set.
I'd bet if you did like (135x10, 155x8, 180x4)=warmup, then you could bust one out at like 235 x2 possibly...I could be totally wrong though as Im fairly unfamiliar with training under 10 reps

Who wants to talk pathetic, Mine around 130
i dont even know if i should compete, seeing as that might be a tad unfair
it should be up to 165 by end of summer.

Yea it probably isn't ideal good point. I'll probably test my 1 RM the same way when it gets close to the contest end to be fair. This way I don't have to change my workouts. It might not be as high as my 'real' 1RM like you pointed out, but it will be the same because it will be the last set after 2 heavy sets. Another thing worth mentioning is I don't have a spotter, so that also limits me.
I expect/hope to make a 5-10lb improvement, I'm cutting so that might not happen, only time will tell.

You know, if this thread was filled with 500+ lb benches, I might be skeptical... but it's not even close... these are all respectable lifts, but I'm sure each and every one has been done by various people in just about every gym across the country. Why the doubting?

KingJustin

You get a :strong: if you win (maybe two)!!!

I don't think there's really a need for weight classes. It's not like we're seeing who can bench the most, it's the biggest increase. You can be 100 lbs or 400 lbs and have a fair shot. The only real disadvantage would come if one was cutting, but breaking it down into bulking/cutting is unfair because some people will slow cut, fast cut, maintenance cut, etc.

Oh, and Kosh, sorry I missed your first post. You can use 265. I plan on winning this regardless ;)

Hey Belial, have you seen my friend Anoop at the gym in Duke? He's pretty easy to spot, he has a turban on.

Anyone care to post any updates?

I haven't maxed bench again, but I hit a 245 triple on the 2 board this week. I'm changing up my routine a little bit to be a little more progressive, but still doing lots of heavy work.

Hope it is not too late to get in.

285 x 1 just yesterday. I hadn't gone that heavy for singles since I had a shoulder injury with heavy negatives last winter.

Hope to hit over 300 by end of summer.

Don't know my initial max, but this was my first bench routine at the beginning of june - 135x10 145x8 135x8 ---> Max was probably around 185

Aiming for 225 max.
-->Post update --> Did 225x3 the other day. Probably around 250 max.

Can we do this again for Fall?

Maki Riddington

Ok, i just noticed this thread. I was having the same competition with myself over the summer lol.

On may 27th i joined my gym for the 3month break i have between school over the summer. I was benching 190x1 at that time.

As of today, the best i have put up is 260 x 2.

70lb increase.........and i weigh in at 159lbs.

Hows that?

waynis
09-11-2004, 06:40 PM

Well i dont know how much i can do of just one rep so going to have to try find that out... should be around the 290/300 range --- thats if its just once up and down...now i am doen sets of bout 8 at 260-270lbs -- but as i have previously said ,i havent pushed my self to the max yet, this week and on should be some gains...so next chest day i will see what i can do, then when this if over i will see where i am at.

:hump: YES!! Finally somewhere that I can brag about this!!! Three days ago I benched 4x145 (my last 1RM was about 145 in July). Did 1x155 after that, figure I could do 1x165 if I hadn't burnt my chest out. I'm 149lbs.

PowerManDL
11-09-2004, 07:53 AM
Pfff, I can bench more than that.
