Thanks guys

I lifted on monday. bench stuff. did some high rep db **** and iso bench and db rows, then i went hyper on super settign the chins and dips and pushups.
since then i didn't lift due t o life being busy on me again.
Im suppose to do lower posterior today but i didn't get my car yet from my friends place. i wont be in the gym tomoro cause 12hour shift and i got a mid temr on monday. i dont know how my weight is doing but im getting a bit leaner due to upping my protein.

Drew - Just a standard Oly. bar.

Couple days ago i did a push up test.....Well, i id 20, then 4more sets of 20, then rested for a couple, then hit 47. I was pleased with that.
Next day i did bench
don't know/care what i benched(yuck, i sound like a bodybuilder:p)
then did pushdowns supersetted with chins for 3 supersetted superset sets
then i ****ed off with a mega pump in the arms.

in other big news, i got myself a sweet deal with the designer slim whey bars. Expire in july but i'll probly get ~40boxes before i get home next.
I just picked up 10lbs of musclejuice today- banana flavour -$15- so i'll probly mix up a mini batch tonight to see how bad it taste

and.... big sidewalk sale this week end with the sup shop so im going to go there friday to get first pic. I'll epty the trunk before i go there;)

guys i fought. all my height. 260+, 240,200lbs the 2 'light' ones are trained in fig hting. it was fun.

finally got my polygraph booklet so i can do that now when i get home.

P.S. Rain sucks. Nova scotia has the rainiest May on record. OLd PR was ~240mm's, Last 2 days alone there was~200mm's in bridgewater(80km south of halifax)

I slept good last night! First 'good' sleep in a few months. 11 hours. Now i feel like a million bucks. I might do somecardio in a bit. not sure if ill go outside and run or bike or go to gym and bike. hmmmmm.......
The weather still sucks here. Not raining atm but still got rain clouds just hoverin up there waiting to dump on us.
Its suppose to be raining till at least tuesday. thats like 3weeks straight.

what is with the deals on supps and food out east? jeeez you guys get all the breaks.

although that bio-x protein is a bit suck, IMHO -- that's the stuff in the beige coloured packages with blue/red writing right? not the best ingredients as I recall -- they had a crapload of 'em at the Costco here a while back and I almost bought a box or six until I read the ingredients.

didn't train sunday, had to work 14hours unexpectantly
didn't train today but......i DID get myself employment at the apt. building that im security at.
I'll be sort of a part time superintendent dude. but only 7pm-7am so ill be aslleep most of the time.
job pays 8$hour cash.
so ill be working 7pmfriday to 7am sat, then 7pm sat to 7am sunday, and 12pmsunday to 12am sunday. AND i 'may' still be doing the landscaping, the landscaper losst my # so i gave it to the contact. if i get the landscaping to that wouild be megabucks.
as is right now im working 36 hours this weekend but the nightshifts are just on call and i sleep on a coach in the building.
And my YoYo life goes on the highnote again

lol, Damn dude, that sucks. Had the pretty much the same thing happen to me once. I was doing incline BB with like a buck eighty (shouldn't have been nothing) and just lost it: I was sick, tired, and shouldn't even have been in the gym. So I'm sitting there and this guy starts coming over and he's sort of smiling, so I got pissed, rolled the thing near to my hips and DL'ed it off.

Wow. I can almost understand my post above. lol

didn't train since then, i 'could' today but i've only got a couple hours of Adam time this weekend so ill probly just take a mental health day.
i'll probly go for a run in a bit though.
I got my tri-o-plex bars....sorta.
i sent back 3 bars like 2.5months ago and told them they were bmoldy. they were from 2 different boxes. trioplex says 'we'll send ya new ****' i say 'cool'.
the bars i sent back were cookies&vcream. bars they sent me were choc chip PB. and they told me on the phone they woiuld send me an extra box cause they took so damn long.
so after i open the package and see its choc chip and they forget my bonus box i give them a ring and let them know.
They say "oh ****!' and tell me that they'll reship the 3 boxes.
for 20$ i got :
2 half moldy boxes of troplex bars +
2 boxes of choc chip +
3 boxes that are in the mail =
me a happy camper:D

Plus my Nitrean is on the way right now so I'll probly get that in a couple days.
i think last week was my busyest week since the week before my accident in aug03.
i had 40hours work + 30hours school + drive to CB and back 5hours each way + big exam.

and i have a kid right now beside me in the library going in convultions or some ****. I think he ate 4lbs of sugar for breakfast.

still haven't lifted since ________.(a long time ago)
yesterday i went for a 2K jog then my shins told me to stop stressing them. then i went for a ~5K bikeride that was all hills. It was a nivce workout.
Thee last 2 days kicked ace. No school tuesday and a quater day today.
Monday night i was falling asleep in the chair in living room, i say to myself, "Bedtime", i stand, go," **** this", and go to sleep on the carpet. I was spent from the previouse 2 weeks.
I dropped off my resume yesterday at the ymca to start volunteering again. Last time i found that it reduced my stress.
Today we had 'physical fitness testing' in school. it was teh ghey.
Pushups i got 54.
Situps people counting said i did 80, it weas total bs. they were just mini crunches.
then we squeezed a scale for grip. i got 206 which was bleh for me. in feb i got 237.
then we had the toughest thing of all. go up stairs at your own pace for 2minutes. It was the lamest thing in the world. since it was at your own pace i just took me old time going.
and i think this is my last wek as the superintendant so now i can start my sprint training as i will have recovery abilities.
I'm thinking that next time im working out i'll hit up some heavy deads.

That was ummmm.........well, I almost died.
so it was just 3x400meter sprints but Wow!....tough.

Came home and laid out side getting some rays, radio said it was 4.44, then 4.50, then 5.40! Fell asleep LOL I woke up and my back was 100% soaked

My HIIT philosiphy: on your sprints, go all out providing you can meet your time requirements. On the rest part, do something 'easy'. this will be very individual as easy for me is the turtle walk while 'easy' for a triathalonist would be a hardcore jog.

Actually, I know a triathlete who does HIIT work and his rest interval is usually a walk back to his starting point. :windup:

i forgot my gym i go to with school had a real scale, jumped on it in a hungry state(only had 2 gronalo bars in 4 hours) and 192 and a bit!!! that explains my feet bitchin at me for the last ~6weeks lol
and i had no creatine in like 18years so im holding zero water. ****, i was happy.

iso pulldowns 3.75ppsx7,6 3.5ppsx8ish 3ppsx10-12ish
iso 'ouch' shoulder press 2ppsx10 did not like this grove at all
iso decline aka iso lockouts, was far to easy so i didn't even bother
Goal was to use iso bench but some guppy was on it for like 2 years, i would worked in but too much work, he was using 0.5pps
pushdowns:cool: 3sets of 12 with ~150
chins 12(i now know why i got worse on these, extra weight)

It's very easy to sell and buy stuff on ebay. It should take a few hours max to figure it all out. I've bought tons of stuff on ebay and I always get everything. I just ordered some books yesterday actually from ebay. It helps alot to have a paypal account, if you don't have one, I highly recommend getting one. Goodluck.

I thought the other day was hot......Its nothinfg compared to9 today.
Temp is 30~ but humidity is equal to 'floating water'. Its awesome/disgusting. I starting sweating approx. 3-4 seconds after coming out of an a/c building.

Rocky road - damn good, taste like an Isoflex(i think there cxalled) Not too sweet, and do NOT have any flavour issues with being after BB
Caramel peanut - Bar i had was a bit smushed/melted(from shipping) but taste was still uneffected. For ME they were too sweet. like the rocky road but sweeter. These ones had bits of nuts in it which gave it some character;)

well, busy as usual
got called into work.....but i benefited. I worked 4 hours but get paid for 12. Thats the benefit of having power over your boss.
The bars i just got made it thru a good fight. I got home after work at 11pm and the apt was 27*C!!!! thats with all the windows open?? damn

had some kickass, 10 hour sleep. It was ace.

Today was supposed to be training........but as usual, things didn't go as planned.
Today was a happy/pised off day. Most of the day was :thumbup: but some was :angry:

I got to thinking today cause a question came up. 'What do you do to enjoy yourself away?' I thought and couldn't answer. Most things that I would like to do are simply out of my price range, because right now getting food is tough enough. So when I go back I'm going to see how much a membership to rock climbing is and I'll check out the social assistance program available at the ymca. I want to play raquet ball at the Y to improve my right side of my bodies co-ordination(still messed from the accident), and I want rock climbing for the same plus its a good overall workout.
I'm still unsure on what my focus will go to after this course. I have to talk with my contacts to see if there will be any openings available. I still plan to pursue Policing, it will just take some time.
FMI(for my information) 2800in account as of july25.
On the plus car insurance should be going down. my father told me about some new legislation coming about. as of now its 2500+$ yearly, which is 25% of all my income.
suppose to drop down to 1500yearly, that will help ALOT.
I think now though that I will take almost any job after this course. As long as I'm out of the poverty league I will be happy.(Ex. eating more than one actual meal a day)

Well, as per usual I didn't lift today.
I enjoyed my day though so I was happy.
I'm going to make it a priority when I go back to enjoy myself. Even though I like it in the new city I'm still not having enough fun. I'm pretty sure I'll go through with the rock climbing and raquetball.
I head back tomoro A.M. then Im going to be busy for a couple days packing/moving, fun:(
Overall though I enjoyed myself this vacation and I got some good sleep in so my mood is much better. Got to meet up with lots of friends and family, and get to the beach to relax(which I needed big time!)

lap = 400meters
2800meter initial jog, supersetted with 200 meter walk, suppersetted wioth 1000meter jog, supperasetted with 400meter walk.

Bars are selling well on ebay. sold ~12boxes thus far.

I got an offer for a fulltime job starting in sept.8.50/hour with full benefits.

I ran 100meters, followed by 10pushups, followed by a 100meter quick walk. 8 reps.
Felt great/aweful.
tomoro i probly won't be gyming, have to study then work.
Sunday is my 12hour shift at work so no training then either.
Monday will be this HIIT again. I want to find something else to do along with my pushups, hopefully something involving the lats, but I'll have ta think about it.

friday i did sprints, usual 100meeter then 100meter walk. just sprints, no pushups or nothin.

after that i go to the car, call the boss back(didn't feel like talkin to him when he called an hour previouse) and found out i had to go straight to work till 11.30pm
then 12-12 next day
then 12-12 again on next(sunday) day.
then monday school followed by volunteer at the gym followed by cleaning the apartment for 3 goddamn hours.
then tuesday(today) in the a.m. i relaxed for an hour or so, now im busy till at least fri night.
Dude is coming to install internet on saturday!
Sunday is work again 12-12.......but its tentative......well, i will either be working usuall security as per usual or i will be the weekend superintendent at the building again. this runmour has come from just about every employee there but the *in charge* women didnt talk to me yet.

Now i have to get a cover letter done to apply to the police department here.....fun:(

knees and shins are in bad bad pain today. yesterday ist was one knee but now they both hurt a ****in lot. It hurts walkin.
Last night i was ****in pissed off bad as usual and i started getting a rage feeling so i interveuned.

friday at 6pm, go to work...........sunday at 4pm, come home.
but ill be getting paid 8$/houyr for ALL hours at work(excluding my 12 hour security shift). So, as I thought would hapen, I'm the super again.
so ill be making 272$ + 78$ for security this weekend.
not sure how long this will be going on but right now i AM in need of the cash.
oh, i added up my bills and compared them with my income.......I'm still losing ~80$ a month.

Im probly not applying for the police accedemy this time around.

As far as I know i will still be going out west after my OJT, unless of course something comes along that pays better then i could make out there. But I seriously doubt that.
Aftyer this weekend im going ta need a phychatrist or something lol.
As of this present second i will be going to the gym(hard to believe eh?) at 5pm sunday. but.....it matters how life is treatin me.

brain fry.......
since thursday night i've been moving non stop....yet, still no gym.
Weekend was *fair* at work, no big issues arose.
after work i ended up going out with some friends - then pool - then food - then 5hours sleep - then school. ALL yesterday i was busy as a frigger. didn't get home till 9.45 at night. then i was busy doing stuff till 12.30, then 6 hours sleep, then grumpy adam returns and writes an exam today followed by.......THE BUFFET!!
2 full jam packed plates of chicken breast, 2 plates of suites, then i was just an angry/tired adam, improvement from grumpy adam.
now i get to go work on my ****ing resyume again at home, burn it to a ****in cd, bring it to the jesus library, print the slut off, go bavck to my apt., read a ****in 180 page book, sleep, tomorow go to a local police detachment to appluy for my ojt.
Im lookin sharp today:cool:
First time in my life i really dressed up just to see how it feels. I got all expensive dress suit clothes on. I even got my hair cut!
So tomorow i want to make a kickass impression on the Police while trying to get the ojt.

As usual my mind has been confucsed as ever on what im going to do after this course is over.
I was *almost* going to apply for the miliary police to do a trhee year stint cause the pay is very awesome, but i reminded my seolf that im 20(i often forget) and i NEED to enjoy at least 6 motnhs of muy life before getting caught up woith something.

well......i had the initiative to get to the gym today......but it didn't happen.
Last night before bed i got a decent headache but with some pills i got some sleep. Wake up this morning feeling like **** with headache and soar throat but pills fixed that.....for a while. then at noon my headache came bach with a vengence, my head felt like it was inflated to 1500PSI, not pleasent. So at that time i had to call off gym. it was going to be cardio via rower today.
now i got 600mg's of ibuprofen flowing thru my veins making me feel 'better'.

PARE training 4 times I did 3 laps in a row, time was 92 secs at first and by the end it was 82secs. I'll be doing this once a week now every week. Great cardio overall.
Then went to the gym.
Ummmm......arms and shoulders.
pushdowns and EZbar curls, about 5 sets each
side raise machine 3 sets
short and sweet
i think one of the reasons ive been so slack lately is because of the gym i go to by school, atmostphere there sucks compared to this one.
might maybe go to gym tomoro, one by school, only if i get out of class early cause im voluntteering at 4ish, just be cardio something.

I wanted to do cardio today but i still have way too much doms in the hams and low back/obliques.
Thats the days good news.

I went to drop off my 'living expenses' check at the bank so i got them to check my balance........not good.
$631, won't even last me 2 weeks cause the end of month bills are coming out soon and i still need to fill the cars tank with gas. Sooooooo, i gotta put in a call to my father and get a hefty loan off him.
I was going to have to anywqays within 6weeks because during my OJT i won't be working and will have to drive 90minutes a day(=$12gas) and still cover all my bills and food.
I did pretty good though managiung my money since february, Considering my income was slightly less then the bills I lasted longer then i figured withoiut getting a loan.
Im counting down the days till I move though! ****, i can't wait.
Life not being poor - Still seems like a dream.

i kept getting faster while not even trying to. practise helps a TON!
I ran 1.21sec first 3.
then after 5 min break i did the first 6, jog lap, 'run' lap, repeat. I still made 3 mins for the 6 laps.
next set of 6 i didnt time
the last 3 i just jogged leasurely yet still pulled off a 1.20sec.
main areas i need to work on are stairs and the turn after you go up stairs.
I played with the 80-100lbs bag in between runs. I jogged around the gym 2 laps with it on my back, tough for the sneakers to handle.
overall great workout!

On the weekend i didn't have any real trouble.
a tenant left their ****in pot full of **** on the element, on max, and left the building.
Soooo, i get a complaint about a smoke detector going off, go up, go in the apt., and all i could see was smoke.
Then i hunted down the stove and the ****in pot was there smoking. I looked to see what it was but it was just smouldering ash at that point.
In my process of making sure the apt. wouldn't burn down i made one hell of a mess:)
only other thing wasn't tenant related.
Garbage compacter was turned off in the morning for whatever reason and wasn't turned back on. I did the garbage run at 8pm.
I find this out because as im doing the garbage run, at the 5th floor, the garbage is jammed in the jesus shoot......all the way from 5th floor all the way down to ground:angry:
That took just over 2 hours to fix.

and next/this coming weekend i'll be working for a minumum of 50 hours, at 8$/hour im happy.

tommorow i 'should' be going on the rower for 30mins.
I'll also be telling the YMCA that my volunteering is now over as well as telling my Boss that I quit:)

autism is a serious life long developmental disabililty that usually arises by the age of 3, it occurs on average 15 out of 10,000 births, it is also 4 times more likely for a male to get the symptoms of autism then a female. It does not descriminate based on race either, there is no race imune to it to prone to it.
the symptoms are usually occured because of a physical disorder in the brain, symptoms include the disturbance of age in relation to : physical, social, language skills.
In response to a disturbance of language skills it could mean that the child just does not talk at all or just not be able to hold up a conversation. That all relates to structure, if you ask a question you get an answer because you requested it, he does not know how to formulate a question on his own,
The way that most autistic people are effected most is socially. They do not know how to use non verbal gestures correctly , when to change body posture, and a big social problem they have is the inabililtiy to care about other peoples feelings, it is almost as if anything done by an autistic person is done for self gratification.
Usually autistic people will have problems with repititive mannerisms, this simply means unconntrolled movement of a body part or whole body, IE tapping foot, or whole body getting shivers.
A typical autisitic childs behaviour involved one of more of the following:
no speech
non-speech vocalizations
delayed development of speech
confusion between the pronouns "I" and "You"
lack of interaction with other children
lack of eye contact
lack of response to people
balancing, e.g. standing on a fence
walking on tiptoes
lack of interest in toys
desire to follow set patterns of behavior/interaction
desire to keep objects in a certain physical pattern
"islets of competence", areas where the child has normal or even advanced competence. Typical examples:
drawing skill
musical skill
calendar arithmetic
memory skills
perfect pitch
there is still no concrete theory on the cause of autism. Treatment is most effeciant when started at the earliest age possible, while there is no cure for it the treatment can still be very effective.
So called normal parents can give birth to an autistic child while the opposite is also true, autistic parents usually give birth to a perfectly healthy baby, The only known genetic connection is twins, if one twin is autistic the other one probly is too.
Is Autism a Disability?
this question cannot be answered simply, there are too many different levels of functioning amound autistic people, high fuctioning would be considered almost regular people that have a slight deficientcy while other autistic people need constant supervision and guideance.
Autism has caught the popular fancy since it was identified. Given how rarely it occurs, it receives a lot of attention because people find it fascinating. There are a number of popular books written by autistic's parents etc. Also, there have been a number of movies and TV shows that portray autism.
Well-known people who have chosen to write or speak about their Autistic family members:
Dan Marino (football player) about his son.
Doug Flutie (football player) about his son, Doug Jr.
Sylvester Stallone (movie actor) about his son, Seargeoh
Occasionally there is speculation as to whether some particular well-known person is autistic, e.g. an author, scientist, or mathematician known to be unsocial and very focused. For example, there is an audiotape called Was Einstein Autistic?
The following rules usually apply to higher functioning autistic people:
-try not to put them in a mianstream class because they function best doing what they like and they lack the social skills required to effectively participate in the classroom discussions. an example would be gym class, there is not really any structure to gym class so autistic people would find it difficult to 'fit in' and because of the social nature of gym class autistic people would not enjoy themselves at all and will just go off by themselves at the first chance they get.
a better thing to do would be to place them in a class that demonstrates one of there strengths and a class with structure. an ex. would be math. The students would understand a task such as "do pages 26 and 27" so the autistic students would fully understand what tasks are at hand.
-if possible getting a aide for the student is a great help. the aide's function is not of a typical fashion. The aide would only have to help in preparring schedualles and 'to do' lists. in short the aide is just there to help give the student more structure in the class room setting, hes not there to help with the actual school work.
-have the student participate in structured games, they cannot just be thrown into any game, it has to be structured for the student to fully understand what it is he has to do.
-many students benefit from carrying a notebook witht there scheduale in it and to do lists that are premade by there aide's. The student should have a seperate binder for each class so they can better understand the difference in thier classes. To be optimal for the student he should have one set of books for schhool and a seperate set just for home use. this will make for less wories on the students part on which books to bring home.
-it is very imiportant for students to learn how to be independant on following their scheduales. by this i mean that they should have a precise scheduale with tasks to do and coresponding times beside it and the students should learn to be able to follow the scheduale on there own. The scheduale should be made for school as well as home, the reason being is that without the structure of a scheduale the student will find himself just bothering others and wasting time. the scheduale at home could be like:
900 get up
905 use washroom, get showered and changed
925 get cereal out and make toast
930 eat cereal and toast
945 watch TV with brother for 45 minutes
While these scheduales may seem excessive they are needed for autistic people in order for them to lead productive lives.
A shorter way of doing this with a higher functioning autistic child is by way of a detailed checklist. an example is:
Make bed____
Get breakfast____
Clean room___
Put toys in bin____
-a high functioning autistic child may learn better if givin a visual perspective to a problem. an example for a multiplying question is:
6 x 7 = 42
It should be represented to them as:
There were 6 people and they each ate 7 chicken nuggets, how many chicken nuggets were eaten in all?

Great day thus far.
hapkido: really fun day, did a lot of sparing and gun disarming.
that in itself was a great workout.
Gym - cardio
bike Level 8 for 4 minutes keeping 80-90rpm, then the remaining 16 minutes Level 2 and i never went below 100RPM. distance for whole time 7.2
I tried to keep it so it wasn't a painful to finish cardio, i was still soaked and beat by the end but now(45mins later) i feel great.
Mood - Great

Note for self: Don't be in a rush for life, go unprepared to alberta and work from there. Figure out life once I'm there. Also, watch more TV, its good for you.

For moi:
During exercise VO2 Max is the point at which the body can no longer increase the amount of oxygen it uses despite the intensity of exercise increasing. If the intensity of exercise increases further the body starts to work anaerobically and lactic acid is produced. However, in most people lactic acid builds to painful levels below their VO2Max, this point is called the anaerobic threshold.

So today without knowing the technicalities I was attempting to stay just under my anaerobic threshhold, cool.

VO2 max: What is it, Why is it so important, and how do you improve it?

by David Hampson

Exercise physiologists define VO2 max as your maximal rate of oxygen consumption. It is a measure of your capacity to generate the energy required for endurance activities and is one of the most important factors determining your ability to exercise for longer than four to five minutes. Improving your VO2 max by 10 percent without changing any other performance factors can take more than a minute off your 5k time, and is an essential factor in races from 800 meters to the marathon. Your sedentary VO2 max values are genetically determined. However, all individuals can make drastic improvements in VO2 max with the right training stimulus. Thus, to attain your best possible performances, VO2 max improvement is one aspect of your training that should not be ignored.

There are two ways to take VO2 max to its highest possible levels; increased volume and increased intensity. Studies show that sedentary people can improve VO2 max by over twenty percent when they begin a running program of 25 miles per week. By increasing mileage to 50 miles per week, VO2 max is improved a further ten percent. Unfortunately there are diminishing returns of VO2 max increases with increased mileage, so drastic improvements will not occur indefinitely. Based on the available research, it seems that maximal VO2 max gains are achieved with a weekly running volume of 60 to 90 miles. Although increases in weekly mileage have shown to be particularly effective at increasing VO2 max, it is important to remember that mileage should be increased gradually, with careful attention towards preventing over-training and injury. Also, VO2 max improvements only occur if you are keeping running intensity the same as you increase your mileage. If you increase your mileage, but slow down your daily running pace, little improvement will occur in VO2 max.

This brings us to the topic of intensity, the second method of enhancing VO2 max. Intensity has actually been proven to be more potent enhancer of VO2 max than volume. For VO2 max improvement to occur, training runs should be conducted at an intensity of at least 70 percent of VO2 max. Seventy percent of VO2 max corresponds to a pace that will bring your heart rate to 75-80 percent of maximum. Running at intensities close to 100 percent VO2 max is the best thing you can do to elevate your VO2 max. This corresponds to about two mile race pace, so unfortunately this intensity cannot be maintained for very long, and training this hard every day would quickly lead to over-training and/or injury. The best way to complete a significant volume of running at 100 percent of VO2 max is to use intervals of three to five minutes at 3k to 5k race pace with about equal recovery between each interval. By dividing your workload into intervals, you can run for more total minutes at 100 percent of VO2 max than if you attempted a continuous run. One interesting note is that running faster than 100 percent of VO2 max will not improve it more than running at 100 percent of VO2 max, and is likely to leave you more fatigued and unable to complete a high volume of work. Faster running is necessary to enhance other performance factors which I won't go into here, but when your focus in on enhancing VO2 max, a higher then 100 percent intensity should not be used.

Q & A on V02 Max

1. What are some different levels of VO2 max, and what do these numbers mean?

VO2 max values, typically expressed in ml/kg/min., can vary between 20 and 90 ml/kg/min. The average value for a sedentary American is about 35 ml/kg/min, while elite endurance athletes average about 70 ml/kg/min. Your sedentary VO2 max value is primarily determined by genetics (a sedentary person may have a VO2 max value as high as 50 ml/kg/min. or as low as 20 ml/kg/min). Although anyone can improve their sedentary VO2 max value through training, this genetic variation helps explain why everyone can't train themselves to be elite.

2. What are some of the highest levels of VO2 max ever recorded?

The highest VO2 max value ever recorded, 93 ml/kg/min, was from a Scandinavian cross country skier. Steve Prefontaine, at 84.4 ml/kg/min, had one of the highest VO2 max values recorded in elite runners. Grete Waitz had a VO2 max of 73 ml/kg/min. when she was running at her best, one of the highest recorded values for women and on par with the values for some elite men.

3. How do some elite runners make up for lower levels of VO2 max?

Although all elite runners have VO2 max values well above the population mean, the correlation between VO2 max and performance is not absolute. Derek Clayton only had a VO2 max of 69 ml/kg/min. and Frank Shorter only recorded a value of 71 ml/kg/min., yet both of these runners ran marathon times of under 2:11 and surely outperformed runners with higher values. This variation in VO2 max values among the elite is possible because VO2 max is only one of several factors that determine running performance. These other factors include mental attitude (ability to tolerate pain), running economy (how efficiently one runs), and lactate threshold (fastest pace you can maintain without accumulating large amounts of lactic acid in your blood). A runner with a relatively low VO2 max, but high in these other performance factors, could outperform a runner with a significantly higher VO2 max but with poor running economy and a low lactate threshold. For example, Derek Clayton and Frank Shorter compensated for their lower VO2 max values with their high efficiency and ability to run their marathons at a high percentage of their VO2 max without accumulating too much lactic acid (high lactate threshold).

4. Why do some people assimilate more oxygen than others?

Although there is still some debate among physiologists as to what limits VO2 max, the variation in maximal oxygen consumption in our population is likely determined by several factors. In order to produce the energy necessary for our muscles to contract at high rates, there must be a delivery system to bring oxygen to the working muscle cells as well as a means of utilizing this oxygen for aerobic respiration. The delivery of oxygen to muscle cells is limited by hemoglobin, the oxygen-binding protein in red blood cells (this is one of the reasons women tend to have lower VO2 max values than men), the number of capillaries surrounding each muscle cell, and the maximum volume of blood that the heart can pump each minute (cardiac output). The utilization of this oxygen is primarily limited by the amount of mitochondria available in the muscle cells to produce aerobic energy. It has also been theorized that utilization may be affected by the contractility of the muscle fibers. Muscle fibers with greater contractility can achieve higher work loads and thus utilize more oxygen.

5. How does oxygen play a role in the production of energy for aerobic exercise?

Oxygen is used by the mitochondria in the muscle cells as a reactant to produce ATP, the fuel for all cellular processes in our body. Although ATP can also be produced in the absence of oxygen (anaerobic respiration), it is a less efficient process yielding much fewer ATP and producing lactic acid as a byproduct. In addition, aerobic respiration allows our body to obtain energy by breaking down fats, which we have a much more abundant supply of than the 400-500g of carbohydrate stored as muscle glycogen.

6. Do other non-running factors that improve fitness (fat loss, increased muscle, etc. from cross-training) also increase VO2 max?

Other non-running factors that enhance fitness will not necessarily result in an increase in VO2 max. Since VO2 max is expressed in terms of body weight, a decrease in weight that is the result of fat loss can result in a significant increase in VO2 max. However, an accompanying loss of any of the muscles used in running can counteract this increase. Increasing muscle mass through weight training or some other non-running activity is unlikely to enhance VO2 max. This is because resistance training causes the muscle cells to grow larger without an increase in the number of mitochondria. This decrease in the density of mitochondria per muscle cell explains why an excessive body-building program can be counterproductive for runners who bulk up easily. However, this doesn't necessarily imply that increased muscle mass will never improve performance. Having a body that is balanced in terms of muscle strength may mean that you are injured less frequently, and thus able to train and race more consistently. It may also increase your running efficiency, so you use less energy to run at any given pace.

i attacked the rower hardcore today. I finally got batters for my mp3 player so i was rockin, overall 20 minutes but there were two sprints in it. First one was 7 minutes and second one 5 minutes.

Great workkout considering i felt like **** today.

If only i could relive ~14 months ago with my current information.
I coulda got school for a reduced fee(skills development canada) and any money that i would have needed to borrow i could havre got a ****en canada student loan(would of only had to pay ~75% back) and i wouldn't be payin a ****en $130 a month on interest for my school loan.

yup, rough night yesterday.
after i posted that i went back to be till 3 and felt much better. to tell ya the truth, i don't remember writing that much lol
I was still tired as as ________ all day but i pulled thru. we celebrated our b-days and all the typical 'family' stuff.
I wanted to go out tonight but i feel like i got hit by a transfer truck. Other than the caffeine yesterday i would have pulled off the highway last night and went for the much needed 8 hour sleep.
This weekend will not be near as good as last time i came home. tomorrow i gotta do a bunch of ****, see my orthadontist(yay, no eating for 3 days:() and finish the night off with a pub crawl.
sunday i'll be leaving 11am ish
and all next week after school i get to go home and work on my bloody 10 page research paper. Is the fun ever going to end?:bang:

pubcrawl saturday night, had a great time at the last bar(2 + 1 = :D).
got in at 4am, got up at 10, left 12.30, home at 7.30, 100% exhausted. got a project due t0morro, have to eat(have yet to eat today), have to calm down my mind, NEED mega sleep.
mood today - exhausted, but fantastic.

Brink's Unified Theory of Nutrition

When people hear the term Unified Theory, some times called the Grand Unified Theory, or even "Theory of Everything," they probably think of it in terms of physics, where a Unified Theory, or single theory capable of defining the nature of the interrelationships among nuclear, electromagnetic, and gravitational forces, would reconcile seemingly incompatible aspects of various field theories to create a single comprehensive set of equations.
Such a theory could potentially unlock all the secrets of nature and the universe itself, or as theoretical physicist Michio Katu, puts it "an equation an inch long that would allow us to read the mind of God." That's how important unified theories can be. However, unified theories don't have to deal with such heady topics as physics or the nature of the universe itself, but can be applied to far more mundane topics, in this case nutrition.

Regardless of the topic, a unified theory, as sated above, seeks to explain seemingly incompatible aspects of various theories. In this article I attempt to unify seemingly incompatible or opposing views regarding nutrition, namely, what is probably the longest running debate in the nutritional sciences: calories vs. macro nutrients.

One school, I would say the 'old school' of nutrition, maintains weight loss or weight gain is all about calories, and "a calorie is a calorie," no matter the source (e.g., carbs, fats, or proteins). They base their position on various lines of evidence to come to that conclusion.

The other school, I would call more the 'new school' of thought on the issue, would state that gaining or losing weight is really about where the calories come from (e.g., carbs, fats, and proteins), and that dictates weight loss or weight gain. Meaning, they feel, the "calorie is a calorie" mantra of the old school is wrong. They too come to this conclusion using various lines of evidence.

This has been an ongoing debate between people in the field of nutrition, biology, physiology, and many other disciplines, for decades. The result of which has led to conflicting advice and a great deal of confusion by the general public, not to mention many medical professionals and other groups.

Before I go any further, two key points that are essential to understand about any unified theory:

A good unified theory is simple, concise, and understandable even to lay people. However, underneath, or behind that theory, is often a great deal of information that can take up many volumes of books. So, for me to outline all the information I have used to come to these conclusions, would take a large book, if not several and is far beyond the scope of this article.

A unified theory is often proposed by some theorist before it can even be proven or fully supported by physical evidence. Over time, different lines of evidence, whether it be mathematical, physical, etc., supports the theory and thus solidifies that theory as being correct, or continued lines of evidence shows the theory needs to be revised or is simply incorrect. I feel there is now more than enough evidence at this point to give a unified theory of nutrition and continuing lines of evidence will continue (with some possible revisions) to solidify the theory as fact.
"A calorie is a calorie"

The old school of nutrition, which often includes most nutritionists, is a calorie is a calorie when it comes to gaining or losing weight. That weight loss or weight gain is strictly a matter of "calories in, calories out." Translated, if you "burn" more calories than you take in, you will lose weight regardless of the calorie source and if you eat more calories than you burn off each day, you will gain weight, regardless of the calorie source.

This long held and accepted view of nutrition is based on the fact that protein and carbs contain approx 4 calories per gram and fat approximately 9 calories per gram and the source of those calories matters not. They base this on the many studies that finds if one reduces calories by X number each day, weight loss is the result and so it goes if you add X number of calories above what you use each day for gaining weight.

However, the "calories in calories out" mantra fails to take into account modern research that finds that fats, carbs, and proteins have very different effects on the metabolism via countless pathways, such as their effects on hormones (e.g., insulin, leptin, glucagon, etc), effects on hunger and appetite, thermic effects (heat production), effects on uncoupling proteins (UCPs), and 1000 other effects that could be mentioned.

Even worse, this school of thought fails to take into account the fact that even within a macro nutrient, they too can have different effects on metabolism. This school of thought ignores the ever mounting volume of studies that have found diets with different macro nutrient ratios with identical calorie intakes have different effects on body composition, cholesterol levels, oxidative stress, etc.

Translated, not only is the mantra "a calorie us a calorie" proven to be false, "all fats are created equal" or "protein is protein" is also incorrect. For example, we now know different fats (e.g. fish oils vs. saturated fats) have vastly different effects on metabolism and health in general, as we now know different carbohydrates have their own effects (e.g. high GI vs. low GI), as we know different proteins can have unique effects.

The "calories don't matter" school of thought

This school of thought will typically tell you that if you eat large amounts of some particular macro nutrient in their magic ratios, calories don't matter. For example, followers of ketogenic style diets that consist of high fat intakes and very low carbohydrate intakes (i.e., Atkins, etc.) often maintain calories don't matter in such a diet.

Others maintain if you eat very high protein intakes with very low fat and carbohydrate intakes, calories don't matter. Like the old school, this school fails to take into account the effects such diets have on various pathways and ignore the simple realities of human physiology, not to mention the laws of thermodynamics!

The reality is, although it's clear different macro nutrients in different amounts and ratios have different effects on weight loss, fat loss, and other metabolic effects, calories do matter. They always have and they always will. The data, and real world experience of millions of dieters, is quite clear on that reality.

The truth behind such diets is that they are often quite good at suppressing appetite and thus the person simply ends up eating fewer calories and losing weight. Also, the weight loss from such diets is often from water vs. fat, at least in the first few weeks. That's not to say people can't experience meaningful weight loss with some of these diets, but the effect comes from a reduction in calories vs. any magical effects often claimed by proponents of such diets.

Weight loss vs. fat loss!

This is where we get into the crux of the true debate and why the two schools of thought are not actually as far apart from one another as they appear to the untrained eye. What has become abundantly clear from the studies performed and real world evidence is that to lose weight we need to use more calories than we take in (via reducing calorie intake and or increasing exercise), but we know different diets have different effects on the metabolism, appetite, body composition, and other physiological variables...

Brink's Unified Theory of Nutrition

...Thus, this reality has led me to Brink's Unified Theory of Nutrition which states:

"Total calories dictates how much weight a person gains or loses;
macro nutrient ratios dictates what a person gains or loses"

This seemingly simple statement allows people to understand the differences between the two schools of thought. For example, studies often find that two groups of people put on the same calorie intakes but very different ratios of carbs, fats, and proteins will lose different amounts of bodyfat and or lean body mass (i.e., muscle, bone, etc.).

Some studies find for example people on a higher protein lower carb diet lose approximately the same amount of weight as another group on a high carb lower protein diet, but the group on the higher protein diet lost more actual fat and less lean body mass (muscle). Or, some studies using the same calorie intakes but different macro nutrient intakes often find the higher protein diet may lose less actual weight than the higher carb lower protein diets, but the actual fat loss is higher in the higher protein low carb diets. This effect has also been seen in some studies that compared high fat/low carb vs. high carb/low fat diets. The effect is usually amplified if exercise is involved as one might expect.

Of course these effects are not found universally in all studies that examine the issue, but the bulk of the data is clear: diets containing different macro nutrient ratios do have different effects on human physiology even when calorie intakes are identical (1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11).

Or, as the authors of one recent study that looked at the issue concluded:

"Diets with identical energy contents can have different effects on leptin concentrations, energy expenditure, voluntary food intake, and nitrogen balance, suggesting that the physiologic adaptations to energy restriction can be modified by dietary composition."(12)

The point being, there are many studies confirming that the actual ratio of carbs, fats, and proteins in a given diet can effect what is actually lost (i.e., fat, muscle, bone, and water) and that total calories has the greatest effect on how much total weight is lost. Are you starting to see how my unified theory of nutrition combines the "calorie is a calorie" school with the "calories don't matter" school to help people make decisions about nutrition?

Knowing this, it becomes much easier for people to understand the seemingly conflicting diet and nutrition advice out there (of course this does not account for the down right unscientific and dangerous nutrition advice people are subjected to via bad books, TV, the 'net, and well meaning friends, but that's another article altogether).

Knowing the above information and keeping the Unified Theory of Nutrition in mind, leads us to some important and potentially useful conclusions:

An optimal diet designed to make a person lose fat and retain as much LBM as possible is not the same as a diet simply designed to lose weight.

A nutrition program designed to create fat loss is not simply a reduced calorie version of a nutrition program designed to gain weight, and visa versa.

Diets need to be designed with fat loss, NOT just weight loss, as the goal, but total calories can't be ignored.

This is why the diets I design for people-or write about-for gaining or losing weight are not simply higher or lower calorie versions of the same diet. In short: diets plans I design for gaining LBM start with total calories and build macro nutrient ratios into the number of calories required. However, diets designed for fat loss (vs. weight loss!) start with the correct macro nutrient ratios that depend on variables such as amount of LBM the person carries vs. bodyfat percent , activity levels, etc., and figure out calories based on the proper macro nutrient ratios to achieve fat loss with a minimum loss of LBM. The actual ratio of macro nutrients can be quite different for both diets and even for individuals.

Diets that give the same macro nutrient ratio to all people (e.g., 40/30/30, or 70,30,10, etc.) regardless of total calories, goals, activity levels, etc., will always be less than optimal. Optimal macro nutrient ratios can change with total calories and other variables.

Perhaps most important, the unified theory explains why the focus on weight loss vs. fat loss by the vast majority of people, including most medical professionals, and the media, will always fail in the long run to deliver the results people want.

Finally, the Universal Theory makes it clear that the optimal diet for losing fat, or gaining muscle, or what ever the goal, must account not only for total calories, but macro nutrient ratios that optimize metabolic effects and answer the questions: what effects will this diet have on appetite? What effects will this diet have on metabolic rate? What effects will this diet have on my lean body mass (LBM)? What effects will this diet have on hormones; both hormones that may improve or impede my goals? What effects will this diet have on (fill in the blank)?

Simply asking, "how much weight will I lose?" is the wrong question which will lead to the wrong answer. To get the optimal effects from your next diet, whether looking to gain weight or lose it, you must ask the right questions to get meaningful answers.

Asking the right questions will also help you avoid the pitfalls of unscientific poorly thought out diets which make promises they can't keep and go against what we know about human physiology and the very laws of physics!

Bottom line here is, if the diet you are following to either gain or loss weight does not address those issues and or questions, then you can count on being among the millions of disappointed people who don't receive the optimal results they had hoped for and have made yet another nutrition "guru" laugh all the way to the bank at your expense.

Any diet that claims calories don't matter, forget it. Any diet that tells you they have a magic ratio of foods, ignore it. Any diet that tells you any one food source is evil, it's a scam. Any diet that tells you it will work for all people all the time no matter the circumstances, throw it out or give it to someone you don't like!

Diary Entry #371.
Didn't end up getting to bed till 2.30 am last night. So i was up for 23 hours straight(minus the mini naps) and to top it off, i only had the one meal yesterday.
I was a mess last night trying to do my friggin paper.
Today was a struggle all day staying awake in class. Guest speakers today all day talkin about uninterestuing subjects, joy:(
Im going for a nap in ~20mins and i don't think i'll be out tonight. i will if something comes up though.
and yeah, police piss me off
The place where i was supposed to go do my on the job training just called the school today(im was suppose to start dec.5) and asked if i informed them(the school) that i wouldn't be doing it. The school was like WTF and questioned me on it. The police station said that they sent all of my forms back to me and sent me a letter, now if theres one thing i hate its liers, and well, there lying.
I didn't recieve a single letter from them let alone a package.
that pissed me off.
So im going monday to the station to seen what the **** is up. If they say that they won't take me now i'll just be headin out to alberrta earlier then expected.
Yeah, last night i got 5 hours sleep. Puts the grand total too 16hours in 4 days, along with driving 3,000 KM's the past 7 day, im ****in dead tired now. I've been having trouble all week knowing what day it is and just other minor problenms like that.
And since coming off of ephedrine 2~ weeks ago I've been horny as ****(like a 21 year old should be).

yesterday A.M. was fitness testing for class
Mile run - 7:41 - took my time first 3 laps, picked up the pace on the last lap.
Pushups strict form 58 in a row
Grip test(squeeze scale) 260lbs - highest in class and im the second smallest
did some other stupid things.

Today was our final day/exam.
Ran 3.5 hours, was intense but fun.
Highlight was doing 4 on 8 gang fights. I like being in the 4, get to do more
after that class i had visable obliques, was cool.
The police called me on the phone this morning, admitted they ****ed up and asked me to still go with them. So i am.
That made me happy to get a call, not just a msg to the secretary like last time.
mood today - ace

oh, soar as **** today too, think its from the run cause my hip flexors are soar.

I'm getting cravings to start working out full-time on a daily basis now. They came at a perfect time cause starting next week I'll have a set scheduale only working ~42 hours a week. I'll be driving 2hours per working day though, the place im going is 70+KM away.

Well, sleep last night was teh suck.
went to bed at 11.30........and my body was in warm mode.
Tried going no blankets, fan on max, nothing, still sweating like a mofo.
So i go to the living room, was a bit better but still to warm.
I didn't get to sleep till 1.15am or later.
So today i was in a battle with myself to go/not go to the gym.
At 2.15 i was fallin asleep in class so i poped a caffeine. TADA! All my problems solved;)

7PM tired in halifax + caffeine at 7,8,9,10PM = wired Adam driving home in record time

I was planning to leave at 3 yesterday........didn't happen.
didn't get to leave hali till 7pm and cut my 5 hour drive home to 4 hours:p
got in 11, left my house by 11.30, staid at bars with friends till 4am, came home played halo 2 for ~1/2 hour, passed out in bed.

Only like 5 people know that im in CB so im not in any rush to get visiting done!

Im sorta maybe thinkin of working out today. If i find someone to go with me i will.(need a fan club;))

sunday i slept/did zero all day. i needed a day to wind down. no caffeine or nothin
today just the 200mg in A.M., was productive till midafternoon then i got a call and found out i had to go back tto hali tuesday A.M., nice long visit:frown:

Tired.........very tired.
Was going to train when i got back in hali, but, got a call from my friends to get wings then the casino.
gambled for the first time in my life haha. Put $10 in the machine, walked away with $15. I was happy.

Go for post-workout piss. Half way through, I get the tingles/hot/cold feelings.
Yup, Im going to passouit. As quick as i can i stop pissing(which was really friggin hard cause i had to go bad!), stumble out of stall, fall on bench, start yelling for my friennd to come help haha
Zero vision, Lost hearing from the left ear, overall useless.
Friend put some wet paper towel on me, felt like cocaine it was so good!
After im soaked i get him to guide me outta the locker room, across the gym, and outside......Still only have shorts on lol
After ~5mins outside im started to feel good. Had steam coming off my upperbody the whole time outside(I'm that hot:rolleyes:) LOL
then i felt like a million $ after all that.

I know why i passed out today so at least im not wotrried. As stated in yesterdays post i was very tired, didn't get much sleep last night, didn't get much food today, didn't rest since sunday, almost falling asleep driving to gym, and went for a intense workout

Had the endorphins kicking full force after the deads. Very awersome.
