View Full Version : What's a Journal???

Punky
07-11-2004, 08:05 PM
I had a journal a long time ago, but the dog ate it. Or maybe it was me, I do love to eat. Although I'm feeling quite unmotivated, I thought I'd start a journal and see where it goes. I think my other journal can be found on page 147 by now and it was just too time consuming to locate it.

For those of you who don't know me...don't believe what Rene or Shane say about me, unless it's good of course....the good stuff is all true and probably way underestimated.

To make it simple....I wanna lose body fat, who doesnt? Maybe losing "10 lbs" would do the trick, but what does the scale really measure anyways??

My problems (watch it Rene!)....

1. old lady knees....no lunges, squats, leg presses, running (oh, I'm 33 btw)
2. I love food....no, not the lettuce and carrots crap...sigh
3. I'm not a big fan of counting every gram of every macronutrient I eat b/c from past experience, it makes me cranky and I just say F it
4. too much info at times....no carb, low carb, high carb, high protein, vegan, eat til you're hungry, it's ok to be hungry, fat is good, fat is bad...too much conflicting info, you get the picture
5. I don't belong to a gym and don't plan on it either...old habits die hard

But, I'm willing to plug along and take criticism and suggestions. I have no plan at the moment, just figured I needed to start somewhere.

Awesome starting this journal. But remember, I'm back home now and as Rene knows, starting tomorrow, I'm no longer an excuse to cheat on the diet. ;)

come on stacy!! you can do it!!! let's start with 15 mins walking in the morning!

Punky
07-12-2004, 07:01 AM
15 minutes of walking??? I said I have old lady knees, not that I was an old lady, lol !!

I plan on hopping on my recumbent bike after work today and letting my knees tell me when I've had enough, but from past experience that usually equals about 25 minutes depending on the resistance and how tired my legs are after standing all day at work, lol.

I realized this morning that as much as I love my "lite" sausage, I'm gonna have to find a different breakfast option. Sausage=pork=pig=more fat on Stacy's ass. That "lite" thing had me in denial for a long time.

Should I count calories, carbs etc or just try to eat clean and eat only when hungry and stop when satisfied??? I've done so many things I don't know what to try anymore. Well, yes, consistency helps too....always been a tough one for me. I'm impatient and want results like yesterday. I do know from past experience that eating 1200-1300 cals for a few days makes me freakin' hungry and then I binge. Eating 2000+ makes me gain. I'm guessing 1800-ish is maintainance....1400-1500 I guess is a good place to start. (Yes, Shane, you told me this last year I think...you're such a smarty pants!)

I'm rambling b/c I don't want to go to work, but I must.

Later,

S

 YEY soooooo glad you started a journal here!

here's what I think on all the crazy info we hear out there. ALL OF IT IS BS! lol

From experience, I think that calories is the #1 thing you should be concerned about when trying to loose fat. "what you eat" will affect the way you feel, so it DOES matter. As far as how many you need... listen to Shane. I'm still confused as to how he figures the #s out but what he told me works.
Workout.. if I were you I wouldn't stress so much about cardio. I realised (after FOREVER, as you know) that cardio is waaaaay over rated. Yes, it's good to do it but over all, all it does is burns calories, so as long as you stay within your caloric intake you really don't need to do all that much cardio.. just do what you can.
Oh yes.. the hunger... I think it's natural to feel hungry at times. Just keep telling yourslef.. "I'm burning fat, I'm burning fat."

welcome back punky! go with your estimate and see how your progress is and how u feel after 2 weeks and adjust from there. preset formulas are a good starting point, but i think they suck in the sense that ppl may think it's a magic number and can try too hard to stick with something that doesnt work. if you're like me, just thinking the phrase "diet" makes me hungry cuz i want what i can't have. if that's the case, let's trade hypnosis services via telepathy.

I kept a semi-calorie count, but didn't really total up anything else. Estimated cals today were 1100, were lower but felt hungry and ate carbs, not always wise, but I'm not always wise :)

B--low carb bagel, "lite" sausage links....no more of that crap
L--low fat cottage cheese, strawberries, fat free yogurt...ate that while the rest of the office staff ate stromboli's and doritos, pfft
D--chicken breast, stir fried in a bit of extra virgin olive oil with low carb teriyaki sauce, carrots and broccoli
Postdinner carb craving...low carb bagel, sugar free raspberry jam, and then a few handfuls of Total Protein cereal

-Multivitamin with Iron, FOC's

Took the dogs for a walk then did 25 minutes on the recumbent bike, not too strenuous on the resistance. My knees and ankles have been achey the entire weekend, but don't really know from what. My cardio was a little higher impact last week and I did some casual jogging with the dogs a few days last week...doesnt take much to strain my lame joints I guess.

Not a bad "first" day.

Punky

Started out good..

B--1/4 c oats, fat free yogurt
L--turkey on wheat, Healthy Choice tomato soup

D--went to a local pub for fish and chips, yep, fried food at it's best. Was at ~900 cals before dinner, I'm sure I doubled that

Nothing entirely accurate to post today, and my diet wasnt stellar either.

B--low carb wheat bagel, turkey
S--1/3 c low fat cottage cheese
L--Total protein cereal, skim milk
S--uh, 2 servings doritos (300 cals, damn me to hell)
D--had a pasta craving for some reason and I really dont even like pasta too much....just thru together whatever I had at home...spinach fettucini, chicken breast, garlic, extra virgin olive oil, salt, pepper, mozz. cheese. It was excellent and I didn't stuff myself, but no clue how many cals. I was at 870 before dinner.

I want to do a short cardio session later after I digest, but my knee feels funky today so we'll see.

Cals today ~1100, including the bad doritos I was force fed at lunch. Yeah, I'm stupid.

B--1/2 c oats
S--protein shake
L--Low Carb Lean Cuisine...chicken, green beans, slivered almonds; and the damn doritos
D--omelet with cheese and stuff

Gonna try to do some cardio later, whatever my knee will allow, and then maybe a few laps in the hot tub after that.

Woke up hungry this morning, so ate a few more cals today, still a bit hungry now, but I'm gonna stop at 1500 where I am now....

B--fat free yogurt, low carb wheat bagel with sugar free rasp. jam
L--deli turkey, low fat cottage cheese, pretzels
S--Detour bar, apple
D--went to a cookout...2 burgers (no bun), corn on the cob (no butter)

Multivitamin, FOC's

Workout...brisk 4 mile walk, my knee still sucks, but getting better, well as good as it ever gets

I feel kinda low-blood sugar shakey today for no real reason, my diet seems ok, so not sure what that's all about. Might eat a simple sugar later if it doesnt improve on its own.

Punky
07-18-2004, 12:49 PM
Had some Diet Swiss Miss last night to see if the jitters would go away, ended up adding a tsp of real sugar when I realized the Diet stuff had only 2 gms of sugar. It did make me feel better. I used to have low blood sugar problems a few years ago but that was usually in the mornings only and only if I ate a sugary cereal or a had a plain bagel with a bunch of coffee. I'm hoping last night was just a fluke.

Dinner tonight is like Thanksgiving in July b/c my inlaws are making a huge spread with turkey, ham, etc including a home-made cake for dessert. My mouth is watering now just thinking about it. I'm planning ahead now as to how to eat cake guilt-free, lol.

Sorry, I had my cake and ate it too, and am embarassed to report my ~2300 caloric intake today, but I must say this is the first time in a few days that I haven't had constant hunger pangs. If it werent for the cake and munchin' on some pretzels during a poker game tonight, my cals would've been fine. I was at my 1lb loss for the week already this morning. Good thing b/c when I would've weighed in tomorrow I wouldve been much more and been pissed off.

I'm sleepy today, not much sleep last night...about 2 1/2 hours. I was planning on doing upper body today, but I just don't see it happening. I'm too lazy to post my entire diet today. The highlights....1100 cals, indulged ever so slightly on pizza at a catered office luncheon, but did include some healthy choices throughout the day included turkey, cottage cheese, and oats. Supersets

PUB stands for Pyramid upper body.

I felt freak'n wimpy today, had to lower my weights to an almost embarrasing level for biceps.

Cardio: 25 min mod. intensity step aerobics, took the dogs for a long walk at a state park

Shoulders (giant sets)
1. Rear delt fly: 12x5lb db's, 10x5lb, 8x8lb, 10x5lb, 12x5lb
2. Standing side laterals: same as above
3. Front raises: same as above

Triceps (supersets)
1. Kickbacks: 12x5lb db's, 10x5lb, 8x8lb, 10x5lb, 12x5lb
2. Overhead extension: 12x15lb, 10x20lb, 8x20lb, 10x15lb, 12x15lb

Biceps (supersets)
1. Hammer curls: 12x10lb db's, 10x12lb, 8x12lb, 10x10lb, 8x8lb <---weak :(
2. Traditional curls: same as above

Diet today...much better than yesterday, ~1100 cals.

My small victory...can see some definition again in my delts and down another pound last week.

In my experience ~45 mins of cardio worked the best for me. It is boring, but it pays off! Jogging is the absolute best fat burner.

Diet is looking nice and clean.

Punky
07-25-2004, 04:38 PM
Hi Beast, thanks for stopping by!

I have a knee with very little cartilage left so I can do 45 min cardio sessions about once every other week which is why I try to compensate by keeping my cals on the lower side. I had plans to go a bit longer today, but my knee wasnt having it so I lowered the intensity and tried that and then just called it quits. I think the walk/light jog I did earlier in the day with the dogs was the problem.

My diet could be ALOT cleaner ;)

Today cals were a tad higher than I would've liked, but not too bad.

Cardio...25 min HIIT on the recumbent bike

B--1/4 cup oats, 2 veggie sausage links
S--fat free yogurt
L--fat free cottage cheese, wrap with low carb tortilla, chicken, lettuce and mustard; peanuts
S--cheese and crackers...poor choice and took my cals higher
D--stir fry...chicken, carrots, mushrooms, bean sprouts, low carb teriyaki sauce ~1Tbsp; no rice

Est. Cals...~1450

Yesterday night, a snack attack hit me, and I caved. Cals total ~2300 :(

Today I made chocolate chip cookies for a friend at work, and I only ate one, well, and a little dough, so let's say 2 cookies, no clue on the calorie count though. I just guessed at 250 each??

B--2 veggie sausage links
L--dry Total Protein cereal
S(?)--2 chocolate chip cookies
D--grilled cheese with fat free cheese and tomato soup

Cals...~1100

Cardio: 45 min low impact aerobics
~35 min upper body work, hit every muscle with varied rep speeds, wasn't in the mood for the upper body workout I have been doing

I'm guessing I didnt totally throw off my week with that monstrous calorie count last night, b/c the past two weeks I've had at least one really high day and have still managed to lose 1 lb per week. Ugh, 10 more lbs to go, seems like it's taking an eternity!

Worked out around 7am today....25 min HIIT on recumbent bike followed by 30 minutes of lower body "floor" work using ankle weights

B--1/4c oats, 2 lite sausage links

I need to either stay off the scale or reassess my plan. I was up 1/2 lb today from Monday, freak'n annoying!

Today...no workout, planned rest day.

B--low carb bagel, 2 lite sausage links
S--fat free yogurt
L--wrap with low carb tortilla, chicken, lettuce and mustard; carrot sticks, ~1/8 c peanuts
S--pretzels (160 cals)
D--chinese takeout: shrimp, carrots, bamboo shoots, water chestnuts...only ate about 3/4 of it, ordered it with very little sauce and a few extra shrimp; ~1/2 c steamed rice

No clue on the cals, but was at 680 before dinner.

Dessert--fat free pudding

Cals: ~1250

Um...so you had the big tub of movie popcorn and lots of artery clogging fun?

Punky
08-07-2004, 06:26 PM
Hey, you're not the boss of me. I can talk any way I want! And, I didn't quite go as far as getting the big tub of popcorn, got the next smallest and actually only ate half of it. I must be coming down with something.

Today....took the dogs to a state park and walked about two hours then came home and did upper body.

Cals today were ~1500-1600, a bit higher than I wanted, but that total didn't include any movie food.

I was looking through my journal....at 1200-ish cals per day I lost 1 lb per week but towards the end of the second week I definitely felt a difference in my workout. I was tired and lifting less. I liked the 1 lb a week weight loss, but not sure if I should sacrifice lifting less for faster weight loss progress. What do you think?

Thanks,

Punky
