is there a correlation betweend the speed of your metabolism and the ability to recover from a workout?

I think that up to a point a higher metabolism equates to quicker recovery. This is not an absolute, but a general statement. It makes sense to me for the simple reason that a higher metabolism indicates that all of the body's processes occur at a higher rate. If these chemical processes occur at a higher rate, then it would make sense that the particular processes required for recovery also occur at a higher rate. Now, there is most certainly an upper limit to this as hyperthyroidism actually can reduce muscle tissue. Let's look at it from another angle, the typical "hardgainer" is usually a thin ectomorphic type who obviously has a high metabolism. This individual doesn't seem to be able to build muscle as quickly as others. Now why is this? It could be because their bodies, with their revved up metabolisms are already treading a thin line between retaining muscle and "burning" it up, and weightlifting with any volume pushes them over the edge. Or, it could be that it is more common for people with hyper metabolisms to have fewer and shorter muscle cells which equates to poorer potential for muscle mass. It could also be that these individuals have a greater degree of slow twitch muscle fibers, which have greater amounts of oxygen processing mitochondria, so that they can process more oxygen in order to facilitate that speedy metabolism. This would also not bode well for big muscles. So, my point is that there are way too many permutations of physiological possibilities to answer this question in a definitive manner, and I will suffice it to answer with a qualified yes to the question.

Just my .02$ but it think that people with faster metabolism recover slower because of the simple fact that they digest everything quicker, and absord less nutrients per sitting. Thats why they have to eat more, often. I would say that people with slow metabolism have better recuparative abilities because they absorb more nutrients per sitting, thats why they tend to gain weight more easily and have to watch for the gut :)
Also, my 2 cents is based on observation. I work in a gym and talk to alot of people and see them how they progress, so, i think im right :D
