View Full Version : The Difference between Olympic and Power lifting

Whats the difference between the two except for the lifts performed which are different.

That is the difference. Olympic lifting is the snatch and clean&jerk. Powerlifting is bench, squat and deadlift.

I'm not particularly sure but with oly lifting you can only have a belt, wrist and knee wraps. There are no specific suits that are worn like powerlifting. They wear singlets but they don't aid with the lift like squat briefs/suits and bench shirts can.

So why don't they add the squat bench and deadlift into olympic lifts, using the same equipment which is already allowed in the olympics? I would love to see that.

Just won't happen because there would be too much confusion as to what would be allowed as far as judging, equipment, and what not. There's been talk of it but there are too many different federations in powerlifting for them to decide on who's rules to use. Olympic lifting has been recognized the world over for decades. Powerlifting is relatively new and just not as worldly accepted.

It'll be in the olympics soon enough. Hey, if CURLING and POWER WALKING can make it, than power lifting will to :)

i remember once someone likening oly lifting to a viper, being very quick / fast, and powerlifting to a dump truck, slower but strong. i've been thinking about this a lot lately, because i will begin wrestling soon, and have thought that i would change my lifting from powerlifting to olympic lifting, since it seems like 'olympic' strength would be more useful in my situation. on the other hand, i could always just do benching at a faster pace / more explosive manner instead of slow and steady, but still trying to figure out which is best

You could incorporate both. Though I think some muscular endurance would help a wrestler as well. Unless you are able to overpower your opponent and put them away fast.

I think powerlifting is great but I have more respect for Olympic lifters. There is more coordination involved in the lifts and I think they 'tend' to be better athletes overall. I don't think powerlifting will get into the Olympics in the near future. But yeah, if curling and power walking are in then it should be as well.

I was the one who said that :) Incorporate both, shooting and sprawling is all explosion, but when you're on the ground, scrapping to get what you can get, slow strength comes in very handy. Focus a TON on heavy pulling movements, like bent over rows, and T-Bar Rows, wrestling is almost all pulling, and a little pushing.

i guess the way i'm looking at is that if i train as follows below, on the weight lifting days i'll be gaining explosive strength, then at wrestling / boxing i'll be gaining the endurance aspect. what rep range should i be going for on the below plan? i've been thinking around 3. i really don't care about muscular size or appearance anymore, just strength.

once a week upper half, once a week lower half. upper half consists of lat pulls, rowing, shrugs, incline press, maybe decline, military press, and dips. bottom half something like squats, sldl's, good mornings, sumo deadlifts, calf raises. not sure how i'm gonna break them down in terms of sets yet, but prolly gonna aim for about 10 per body half. also on bottom half squats will be 4-5 of the 10. wrestling will be around an hour i think, hopefully 3 times weekly, boxing 20 minutes maximum intensity once, maybe twice, weekly
