Actually the best time is in the morning before breakfast, becuase you'll burn more fat like that. About lifting on & cardio on the same day, I dont do it. If I did I would try to do it & 2 different times. Like say cardio early in the mornin & then lift that afternoon/evening. However if you're going to do cardio at the same session then I would think it would be better to do it after a workout. Doing 45 minutes of cardio gets me pretty tired, so I would imagine lifting weights would be harder after I was already fatigued.

I would just do cardio on non-lifting days an hour or so after a light meal.

I agree, doing cardio in the morning before breakfast will help you lose more fat, but it will definitely also help you lose more muscle. Like fen2zla said, do cardio on your non-lifting days after a light meal. That's what I did on my last cut, and I lost all the fat I wanted to lose while keeping almost all my muscle (I feel like I may have even gained a little muscle, as I still increased on my lifts while cutting). I also recommend you cut slowly (don't lose more than 1-1.5 lbs. a week, unless you have A LOT of fat). Do this, and you should lose the fat, and keep the muscle.

Separated as far as possible from your lifting workouts. I usually do mine on the weekends when I don't lift.

But seriously, I've trained for close to 5 years & always cut like that. My strength never dropped while I was doing so I just assumed I wasnt losing any muscle mass.

Well, whatever works for you I guess. But for most people I think it's bad advice and a widely-perpetuated myth. For one thing it ignores the most important lesson a n00b needs to learn about weight loss - it's all about the overall calorie deficit. Cardio burns calories regardless of what's in your stomach when you do it.

I also can't figure out why the same people who are opposed to doing cardio after weights because it causes muscle loss will advise doing it in the morning before eating anything (I'm not saying this was your claim, this is just why it's a pet peeve issue for me).

90% of the time it's right after my workout. My body is warmed up and it's a great way to get the blood into the muscles.
