How many months do you guys usually bulk for?
I've been at it for about 3 weeks now. I want to be cut by next May and I figure I will have to lose 20 lbs. So if I'm losing 1 lb/week, I'll need 20 weeks or about 5 months. That means I'll have to start right after Christmas and I have about 3 months of bulking to go. Does that sound about right, 3-4 months of bulking?

It varies, but 3-4 months is a good start. How much do you want to gain?

It's all relative to how much fat your comfortable putting on and what kind of time frame your working with.
It's completely dependent on the amount of fat gain. The bulk is over once I'm at a certain level of bodyfat, whether that took 2 weeks or 2 years to reach.

I agree with Vido..My bulks end when I can't take the fat anymore

Are you always going to gain fat when bulking? What are the chances of slowly putting on just muscle?

The chances are pretty good actually.
Control your diet closely and do a slow bulk.
I gained 37.5 lbs last year in 11 months and my slight belly was gone, because I controlled my diet well.
(As well as newbie gains I guess.)

Ok, thanks for the replies.

You can do it, but you'll be adding muscle at a slower rate as well. That's better if you want to look good year round, but who needs abs at this time of year anyway? :D
Seriously though, the worst part about trying to limit fat gain to zero on a bulk is that you have to be so precise with everything you're eating, much like on a cut. I'd rather have a little leeway to eat some junk if I want it while I'm bulking, and then get completely dialed in for a cut.
